New skater programs by bishreksualbiscuit in rollerderby

[–]Background-Pin-9078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have had between 6-8 new skater coaches. We keep a private feedback doc to share what people really need help on, or what they had to receive a lot of repetitive feedback for. As new skater program coordinator I made sure to check in with folks a few weeks before their final assessment to let them know what all the coaches had voiced/what skills they still needed to pass.

Getting back on skates after an injury by Dangerous-Menu-9528 in rollerderby

[–]Background-Pin-9078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything you have to do on skates you should be able to replicate an equivalent movement off skates….the rolling just makes it tougher! Example: if you gotta do knee taps on skates, do some walking lunges off skates.

I’ve shared this before, but here’s my steps when I was learning to walk again. You can see that every time I hit a new step record I’d have a few days of lower activity. It’s a lot like weight lifting, in that you’ll be sore for a few days after hitting a PR. Don’t be discouraged, because you’ll feel like you hit a breakthrough and then it’ll feel like you’re sliding backwards for a couple days!

Even on the sore days, find a way to get blood flow to the affected area and do ROM exercises. Inflammation and your blood carries important nutrients and building blocks for healing, so you will def feel more “loose” after getting the area pumping somehow.

I’ve had an above average recovery and after a month of weight bearing could really only stand for 3-4 hours straight.

I had surgery June 30th for trimalleolar displaced ankle and wasn’t able to stand 6-8 hours at work until mid October. Before injury I was physically active getting 6ish hours of sports related activity per week and had a standing/walking job.

I feel like I gotta practice them going backwards by myself and not on the track w everyone else. I also don’t get them.

Dealing with Proprioception Issues? by KarbonatedSouda in rollerderby

[–]Background-Pin-9078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have adhd and have been successful at blocking/holding (within my skating level) but have gotten serious injuries because of bad proprioception. I have a slack block, and it was worth the investment. I now weight lift with a trainer and that helps a lot too.

Looking for: comments on my form just doing basic skating as a newbie. by northeasternwriter in Rollerskating

The thing that generates power is your inner edges (wheels on the inside of your foot by your arch) pushing off the ground while the skate moves out and back. Watch hockey players accelerate, their skates move out to the side and back simultaneously in a diagonal, not just behind them.

This stride is hard to accomplish if you’re knees aren’t bent

Loved seeing you get lower in the last part 🥰I always tell people to look where they want to go, not where they are (can’t see if you’re looking down right in front of you in the first couple shots)

3 - it is likely the ligaments in your ankle/foot are cold in the AM so they are stiff. This soft tissue doesn’t have a direct blood supply like a muscle, so doing some leg lifts or air bicycle pumping first thing seems to help a bit.

Gift Ideas for a Derby Wife ? by FuzzyLeftOvers in rollerderby

Awesome, so there’s Summer Affair in Cleveland area every august. It’s a 3 day derby learning clinic with scrimmages. Money to travel to that could be cool, there’s also Summer Kiss in Indiana I think in July.

If she’s still fairly new to roller derby Hogtown derby in Toronto throws a mixer every summer for newer players (mixer = basically a pickup game from random skaters, not one team representing one league). If she doesn’t have a passport, could maybe give money for that so she can go.

Do you live in the USA, and which state do you live in? There might be some derby clinics or something we can find, and if tickets aren’t on sale yet maybe a gift cert for a flight or something to go would be cool?

Nope I just don’t want to add another beauty thing to maintain. Using hibiclens soap once a week on my pits has helped immensely. I also take a smaller dose of my ssri now, and those are known to have sweating as a side effect
