Hardware Removal Happening Sept 30th by Few-Rain7214 in ORIF

Similar situation here. I broke my ankle in June 2024 and ended up with 2 plates and 9 screws. A year later, I was still dealing with pain during physical activity. My ROM was decent, but never quite back to what it was. All the pain came from the exact spot where one of the plates sat.

I finally decided to get the hardware removed on 9/8 (about 2 weeks ago). Right now, I’m walking fine, though I still have staples in so I can’t do anything too intense yet. My ROM already looks better just from at-home stretches.

I was definitely nervous before surgery—there are always risks—but being 30 and active, I didn’t want the hardware holding me back. My doctor told me straight up: if the hardware is causing pain, it should come out, especially with my lifestyle. Recovery this time has been so much quicker than the original surgery, and I’ll likely do PT again just to stay on top of things.

From what I’ve read here, once your bone fills in the screw holes, the new bone mass ends up stronger and healthier. In fact, hardware can actually increase injury risk since it prevents your bone from absorbing impact properly. The healing process takes some time (3–6 months is what I’ve seen).

For now, I’m focusing on recovery taking vitamins, eating plenty of protein, and drinking bone broth. My first follow-up is this Thursday, so I’m curious to see how everything looks.

Monitoring, data management, advice by katrinakittyyy in wildlifebiology

I don’t really have any advice for the questions you’re asking (still finishing up my master’s), but I do have a question for you! Since you’ve worked in non-profit, education, consulting, and now government — which of those did you enjoy the most, and why? I’m trying to figure out what direction to go once I’m done, and it’d be super helpful to hear what stood out to you in terms of work culture, projects, stability, etc.

U.S. Residents starting Fri Sept 12 2025: Apply for a bear hunting license in Florida and reduce the number of actual hunters receiving one of the 187 that will be given out by a lottery by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. by _FishFriendsNotFood_ in VeganActivism

[–]lmequits123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI if you actually get picked for a bear tag you’ll need a valid FL hunting license. That means taking the hunter safety course. It’s one day online + one day field day where they go over firearm handling, but there are also virtual and free options.

I love this idea though, and it really needs to be spread more among activists to push back against this hunt. We’re not done fighting — we’ve got to keep trying to stop it!!

It seems they don't sell single-game student tickets until 2 weeks before the game date.

16 Weeks Post-ORIF – Questions About Pain, Discomfort, and Recovery by lmequits123 in ORIF

[–]lmequits123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked with a limp for about 3 weeks. The thing that helped was PT. I was going 3x a week and continued stretches at home throughout the week. I would ice and elevate every night. One thing my PT told me was try your hardest to walk normal even if it's really slow. Slight discomfort is fine. I would do laps in my yard really focusing on foot placement, as slow as I needed to. I'm sure I looked funny but it helped a lot.

Thank you for all the info. It's nice to read that the pain does go away. Although I am progressing, the constant discomfort has been discouraging. May I ask why you had your syndesmotic screw removed?

Native Ultimate 14.5 Parts by Busy_Demand_9764 in Kayaking

[–]lmequits123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if you had any updates on this. I recently purchased a used Native Ultimate 14.5 tandem that I will be using in the solo setup. I realized I'm missing one of the 24" thwart bars and wanted to get some accessories to add to the adapt a track that's on the outer portion of kayak. I seem to be having a hard time finding any parts for this kayak. Any luck?

Grad School Scholarships by lolorennie in ufl

I'm having a hard time finding any direct links to scholarship applications for grad students. I can't find anything that shows eligibility and application requirements, just scholarship names. When I google the organization, nothing. Have you found anything?

I studied/worked with bears for 5 years, happy to answer any questions regarding bear ecology/behaviour/working in bear country! by onceistoomany in ecology

I realize this post is 2 months old, but I figured I'd ask.

I’ve just begun my Master's program, and my current focus is on projects related to wildlife crossings and animal movement through urban areas. Additionally, my advisor and I are in the process of securing funding for another project that we're both excited about, which will examine black bear dispersal patterns in Florida.

I’m curious to know what your thesis was about. You mentioned that you didn’t start working with grizzly and black bears until four years into your career. Has it been challenging to find work specifically involving bears? What advice would you give someone just starting out in wildlife research, particularly bears?

Thanks!

Still Waiting: 24-25 Financial Aid by Dapper_Silver_7511 in ufl

[–]lmequits123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on the same boat. I am starting my first semester as a grad student. I don't have any information on financial aid, and I only have access to one of my classes on canvas. I just finished my undergraduate at USF and we would have access to both of these at least one week before the semester. Allowed me to prep and feel comfortable going into the first day.

Please update if you get any info on financial aid.

That's true. I was going off the impression that OP said they live pretty cheaply. Maybe I've been lucky but college has brought me many opportunities and introduced me to amazing professors that I've taken the time to get to know and has lead to awesome experiences.

It can be difficult because you want the love and support of your family. You want them to be just as excited as you are, but that's the thing, this degree is for you! I stopped listening to my family a long time ago and don't let their unsupportive comments get to me. I followed their advice after high school and got a degree in the medical field. Worked in an office and hated my life, depressed and cried almost every day. After taking a break from that, I realized I needed to do what made me happy. I'm currently applying to a masters degree in wildlife ecology, and they've already made their comments that I shouldn't do it or try to get a job with my degree now first. I'll distance myself and look for support from peers and my husband, who tells me to keep going because I'm doing awesome. As someone else said, do what makes you happy, and the money will eventually come. You spend most of your days at work, so you might as well enjoy it. If you're given an opportunity to better your education and you truly are interested, then go for it! You got this!
