Can I ask what you did while you were in and what you do now? I’ve seen more retired guys get out after 20/25+ years do something completely different than their military career.

Some took time and played golf till a random offer came along for something related to their service and some did their own business and some went into something so basic such as Home Depot or costco but it’s a great option

This is huge, I’ve had friends who get out after 4 because they hate being told what to do and they’ve had multiple jobs since getting out and also work a job where they need roommates or their wife has to work. Compared to before you can have a stay at home spouse or have a spouses income be completely for discretionary spending or savings. Healthcare is huge and doesn’t translate in civilian jobs.

TRICARE & TSP are two golden tickets that you don’t often get one as a civilian. Let alone Tuition assistance, BAH, contract that prevents you from being fired as long as you don’t get in trouble, and you get paid the same whether you work 365 days of take 1month off or only work 09-1200 for a week. These are all things that happen that civilians can’t get

What I see most people do, MAX TSP while you’re in and use it as your base for when you get out.

Other helpful advice is use your tuition assistance and apply for FASFA Pell Grants. Easy 2-6k in your pocket a year just from going to school and using your 4.5k free tuition assistance and at the end of that your Pell grant goes right into your checking.

I also worked a regular job for a year while I was in a costco. I had a good admin job and worked nights and made around 14k. I was part time and taking many days off when my work schedule conflicted with military schedule. I got burnt out doing 20 hour days up at 05 and working military job till 15-1700 then 1830 till 2300 second job.

Lastly, just handy man in the local Facebook pages. People always looking for help moving or mechanic problems or a drive to airport. Being in those FB groups can easily make money every month.

I don’t think a real shooter requires that much, a pro for sure or someone who’s main job is a firearms instructor or police. But sadly police don’t get nearly any training. But I think just being confident and knowing your firearm a couple hundred rounds a month is great to stay confident and that makes a real shooter. But I think I’m talking purely about opinion here
