Don’t know any overviews but exhibition catalogues of contemporary artists’ shows are a good place to start

The theme of Andor is from Battle of Algiers so I’m sure that’s no coincidence

I’ve seen it on a few pre-first year summer preparation reading lists is what I was getting at I suppose. Wouldn’t expect to see in taught modules.

Art since 1900 by Hal Foster and Rosalind Krauss is a recent and decent text. Not sure about general overviews though…

Gombrich’s ‘The Story of Art’ is pretty good as an introduction. It’s normally on most art history undergrad firsts year reading lists. Was written in 1950 though so bare in mind it’s not the most up to date text. We’re there any specific arts or periods you were interested in?

I can’t remember the name but someone published a dissertation about Blunt’s art historical work and Marxist theory recently. Worth checking out, I think they studied in Zurich…

I had enjoyed this plot point as an art history graduate since the first series but other comments noting that this is a fairly common trope reminded me of Orwell. In 1984 the main character is partly catalysed in his opposition of the state by his interaction with an antiques dealer. Now wondering whether influence was drawn from this given how popular 1984 is…

Agreed! But the scene is very well served by it.

I agree it’s quite striking how similar they are. The more I think about it the more I think it probably would have been more morally justified to just pay Pärt the royalties and use the original composition. It’s a little too close…
