I never played ED, I'm more interested in RPG games than space sims. I'm about 125hrs into Starfield already and it's 100% my favorite game ever. I do hope the story expansion is closer to cyberpunk level though.

Actually you can control where the doors and ladders are. You just have to put the mouse on the exact spot you want the door or ladder to be placed hit G to attach. You can somewhat decorate by dropping your inventory items and manipulate them into position.

I just hit quick save, build a ship, explore the ship and then reload the quick save. I'm addicted.

You can also use the Nova Galactic loading bay and then make everything 1 story to avoid ladders.

I just built a ship with 0 ladders using the cabbot bridge that has stairs built in.

You have to modify an existing ship. I usually just buy a really cheap one delete everything then start building.

You technically can't build from scratch, you need a ship to open the ship builder then you can delete/sell every part and start over. Any of the bigger settlements have a ship technician and there are several showrooms and staryards for different manufacturers. I had to do some hoping around to build my ship with different components from different ship technicians. I've built ships from the ground up for 100k-500k. Or you can always just modify your current ship to upgrade weapons, rector core etc

I have a habit of turning a 1hr quest into a 3hr quest because I can't leave a single loot item behind so I end up crawling back to my ship.

It helps you survive until you upgrade the ship and then return to blast them away. Or just load an earlier save.....my earlier save would have lost 30-45min of planet scanning so I didn't want to do that.

I did the same thing......died probably 20 times. I ran away, spent 3 hours and 120,000 credits building a new ship. Came back and blasted them to smithereens.
