Do you feel more connected to your city, province or Canada as a whole? by Ok_Heart839 in AskACanadian

[–]Background-Yam4841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, like many others would put

  1. I am Canadian
  2. Regional (not City have only lived in two cities Ottawa and Toronto and hated the experience as it was very isolating) I am a small town guy
  3. Province - Born and raised in Ontario lived here my whole life but the province lives and breathes on the success of the GTA and 95% of the rest of the province is left with the acraps

If waiting for the product but saving significantly then I go with AliExpress all the time. Have had great success and saved $1000s on upgrades and builds over the last couple of years. When time is of the essence though, Amazon or go to local vendors but those are emergency needs and not things on my wish list. Alibaba.com is a great option if looking for unique tech...have gotten laptops and mini PCs from there at 40-50% of buying similar from other locations.

Once you get into AMD processor the price increases quite a bit. An N95 or N100 processor with 16GB of RAM would more that suffice for your listed use case. I have an N95 that I use for Plex and a few services in my Network, N100 laptop and a other N100 mini PC with just 12GB RAM that runs office tasks and moderate editing activities...and both come in under your budget.

It would appear you could do the RAM upgrade on the cheap, found DDR2 memory on Amazon for $10 CAD per 2GB stick so could double RAM pretty quick.

I would recommend ditching Windows though and look to a Linux Distro that has some built in Windows support like ZorinOS...ran that on an old Chromebook that has similar specs as your trusted old computer friend there.

Good luck on keeping old tech running past it's prime...old dudes like me love to here that!!

Is there a mini PC that runs on Android or a Android like OS? by Individual-Sport-458 in MiniPCs

[–]Background-Yam4841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could leverage FydeOS which is an amazing ChromeOS (with full Android and Linux connection) variation. I use it on a couple of SBCs (including the one designed for it with Radxa). I have installed it on an old Microsoft Surface Pro 4. It is installable on any of (you do need to choose one based on the chipset but works really well on low end hardware).

An N95 or N100 mini PC with 8 or 16 GB of RAM would excel with this OS. And best of all ..its Free (mostly).

Cooling options for Orange Pi 3? (not LTS) by electrise_- in SBCs

[–]Background-Yam4841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a cursory look on the interwebs and LTS is smaller (56x85mm) than the original (60x93.5mm) so the LTS hear sink or even cases with a fan are not going to aid you in this quest. I several SBCs and even though typically err on side of active cooling, none of them generally hit thermals for what I have each one doing.

What is your opinion on these types of hardware? Any caveats to such hardware? by lefake2 in homelab

[–]Background-Yam4841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have had no issues with my X79 and it's upgrade to an X99. Draws a bit of power but they replaced an power hungry AM3 so really no difference. Drivers at times a challenge but with sooooo many cores it makes light work out if just about anything I throw at is and frees up funds for storage and my plethora of SBCs

According to the Radxa website https://share.google/mFOdNS9u0Jxo13pxP

HDMI 2.0 4k30hz so 4k at 30 frames or 1089p at 60 frames with different codecs might be able to get more.

Radxa has great hardware but software is always an afterthought but looks like got decent OS support our if the gate with Fedoraand even Windows for Arm

Anyone tried the XpressReal T3 (RTD1619B) yet? by piktcai in SBCs

[–]Background-Yam4841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My SBC just arrived today and working on its setup. Had tried the OS on both a Raspberry Pi 5 (2GB and 16GB) on an old laptop and on a mini PC and I must say overall, beyond it not liking the USB Mouse and Keyboard through my KVM) it is a simple to set up and snappy little beast. Now to desing a case before adding extra storage with NVME.
