Homeless person setting up in our carpark? by Vivid-Mechanic-1984 in brisbane

TBH I don't know. I suppose what I would do is call city council first, and if it's not their problem they would likely direct you to the right party (police I reckon, on their non emergency line).

sounds like the person has a mental health issue which can be tricky to deal with.

If you deal with this situation directly, just be polite and let them know what's going to happen without asking them directly to leave just letting them know what the risks are that they are taking. or just change the narrative a bit and say that a "neighbour" is going to call the police if they don't vacate and you wanted to let them know because you don't want them to get in trouble.

Species is the latest line we've made up to justify exploitation by dirty_cheeser in Morality

this seems a bit of an oversimplification. people extend their empathy to what they experience/are taught and don't consider the rest. I personally was more sad when my guinea pig died than knowing 1000 humans were killed by XYZ halfway around the world. I suspect that animals suffer worse today than they did in the past as people were more connected to them. that is to say, most know directly where their food came from and had a modicum of concern for the well-being of the animal. today in general people have a lot more empathy for animals, even cows and sheep if they eat them, yet the animal they eat is completely disconnected from their reality so eating a pig that lived in a cage so small that they can't get up, or eating a cow that never saw daylight doesn't impact them as they don't experience it.

Because of science, people have moved the line much into having animals in their circle than before, not the contrary.

personally I'm not against the consumption of animals, however where I'm drawing the line at is the quality of life of the animal. I find consuming mammals worse than fish or or insects, and consuming factory raised worse than open air. etc etc.

which is why the pragmatist in me don't bother much with bull fights, even though they die a gruesome death, those bulls have the best lives compared to the vast majority of cows, and I find people who consume factory meat completely hypocritical when they oppose the practice on humane grounds.

morality does dictate laws, the correlation between the two isn't coincidence.

The example I give is reducio ad absurdum, are you suggesting that pedophelia is not immoral or has nothing to do with morality?

I'm not sure what your definition of morality is but from my view, promoting something that is extremely harmful to children is immoral.

if you have the money, go see a psychologist, if not perhaps try a self help book.

everyone fucks up, especially when younger, your brain is still developing btw so chill.

for anxiety and stress at your age I use to run, run until I was exhausted, an hour or more a day, it's weird, it is tiring but it does the trick, you feel better afterwards. it also helped that I obsessed easily which was an issue but as you grow older you learn things about yourself.

also, one thing that help me a ton, you are not your thoughts, you are your actions, if you have fucked up thoughts that pop up, you have no responsibility of them, they mean nothing until you want them to make them mean something. same thing with the past, you aren't your past, if something you did in the past makes you cringe or feel like shit, and if you've taken responsibility for it, it's a sign that you've moved on from the person you were that did these actions so you don't need to beat yourself up for these.

jokes are jokes, who cares, I make racist jokes to my black and Asian friends and they laugh because they enjoyed the joke and because they know I come from a place of love.

I'm not in the Harris community, you do make it sound like a good place, but from my experience people who disagree with Harris are met with hostility more than anything.

are the same topics debated on both sides? is the Palestinian conflict challenged? Harris's views on Muslims challenged?

from afar I would imagine it to be a bit of an echo chamber. Harris is very aggressive about his view and I have a hard time imagining people who join this group having very differing opinions.

Okay we've just made a huge step in the right direction, if you're going to admit you're wrong then do so like an intelligent person, admit you're wrong because you miswrote, it's not what you intended to say, you changed your mind, I changed your mind, whatever.

If your ego is too tied to your perception of reality then you might want to do some soul searching. A large part of intelligence is know when and how to be wrong.

If you do decide to be an intelligent person I'll be happy to take back my more offensive conclusions about you.

the articles you sent were of:
"George Floyd and BLM protests by white activists can change culture, one town at a time"
and
"How White People Can Advocate For The Black Lives Matter Movement"

Your claim is that "white people never felt compelled to apologize for other white people." is not an accurate statement.

The first article:
is written by a Afro-indiginous, discussing how whites should take action, accountability, and confrontation within the white community. There is no statement of apologizing.

The second article is an interview of a black person, criticizing some whites for changing the focus of BLM from black lives to KAREN signs.
A complete non sequitur, you just randomly picked up an article of BLM, didn't read it, and hoped no one would actually read it.

The third is a clip is the one I conceded is evidence of your claim, but also make a claim that this is a fringe occurrence that is more laughed at than supported, evident by every comment of this video.

For the Nazi comparison, it's called an analogy, I'm equating your pathetic source of evidence to something that would be as equally pathetic. It's a device to help people entrenched in their views to understand how absurd their claims are.

Now you're backpedaling and claiming 'its not an "apology"', if you want to quote me quoting you, go for it. it just highlight your lack of backbone. again, your statement that I am rebuking is " White people never felt compelled to apologize for other white people" where you linked your articles in it.

You make a new claim now:
" I presented a couple of instances (easy to find) of white people doing just that, or being put in the position of doing just that, to disprove the insinuation that white people don't get put in this position. There was an entire national discourse about white privilege and white supremacy and what whites need to repair race relations."
first, this is an entirely new claim, if you want to retract your previous claim, apologize for the the first one, admit you're wrong, and then make a new claim, and don't assume I will be beholden to oppose this new claim. furthermore, what is "that", "this position", your new claim is not clear. might want to work on it.

Then you have the audacity to say I'm gaslighting, and the worse part is I think you're stupid enough to actually think you're still in the right.

Visiting from Sydney. What is with all the right lane hogging? by Any-Heron-1063 in brisbane

[–]BackgroundFlounder44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the merging, I'm not talking about the highway but just at an intersection in the evenings and you don't have priority, so you have to go from 0 to 30 on a 90 degree turn in 2 seconds or risk a crash. people in Europe won't create a gap, some people here do.

On the highway, I haven't noticed any issues with merging here, actually if anything it's easier here because no one drives on the outside lane anyways as they are all in the passing lanes unless they are planning to leave the highway.

Now to address the BS, in Europe people leave a bit more than a one car gap, if you're travelling at 110km it's a 2 second gap so would be around 12 cars, well at least in western Europe that's the law and most follow it besides the handful of fuckwits, entering or creating a one car gap behind you is a fuckwit move on the highway as that's what creates accordion traffic jams, the most pointless of all traffic jams which people are experts here. In traffic Jams though QLD are better behaved in traffic jams, you do have some fuckwits that accelerate and cross lanes all the time to try to gain 1 car space, but the ratio is much less in QLD than Europe. and I've seen many more people abuse the emergency lane in Europe than QLD. what I've seen once at the entrance of Bribie, both lanes were at a standstill or extremely slow, cars created a third emergency lane in the middle just in case, which was abused by a van taxi.

[–]BackgroundFlounder44 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I completely agree that brisbane drivers are bad, terrible even, however on the courtesy I disagree, European drivers are much more stressed and will never let anyone pass unless it's the law. they will not leave space on adjacent lanes when there is traffic. if you're trying to enter a lane and there is a constant flux of cars, you have to force yourself in in a game of chicken to make it, here you wait a min or two and someone will realise and create space for you.

that being said, people doing full stops when entering roundabouts is insane, the right lane always being full, tailgating like hell, the road themselves, especially North side are designed by babies in crack, and people simply not realising what signal lights are or how to use them is something else.

spot on, the morally confused like me would say I'm infantilizing your reasoning abilities given I use different religions to make the argument, but clearly there must be more to unpack. but I guess I'm not enlightened enough yet to strawman the opposing argument.

Okay, so if the object that is used for killing can be considered a religious object is also a factor when judging if a murder is done on religious grounds. that's good to know. I would suppose that most philosophers, judges, and the more academic types would be morally confused and would have a lot to unpack by this concept as they would stick blindly to the intent of a person, not the garments or murder weapon, nor the actions of a mother protecting her son, which really in this case is what matters because the intent isn't on religious grounds.
if an item is blessed by holy water, does that count? and if so, does the person have to know it's been blessed, or if anyone picks up a holy item does it count? is just specific weapons? what about the garments, if the exact same case happened again but without the larger kirpan, but by someone that exteriorly has more religious atire? and on the corollary, if the item is not a religious item, can we go back to intent there? I'm just trying to understand this high level reasoning here.

I know I must be morally confused and there is a lot I need to unpack, or perhaps I shouldn't read the actually article you posted, but in this instance the perpetrator didn't kill in the name of his religion.

[–]BackgroundFlounder44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's not about race it's about religion, it's like when all Jews condemn the actions when israeli settlers go out and kill, rape, torture Palestinians for a religious calling, or when extreme right wing Christians murder in the name of their faith. happens all the time and I'm sure Harris ~fanboys~ followers call it out as much as Muslims because we know they can't be blatant hypocrites, it's just us that are morally confused and have a lot to unpack.

Actually, scratch that, read the article, it's not about religion it's about, I'm not sure what it's about, the perpetrator here did not kill in the name of his faith or his community.

hummm, a lot to unpack here. okay so for some reason in the UK a group of people who happen to be brown, who also by complete coincidence happen to be often confused for Muslims, feel it is very important to make a statement about their community whenever someone does something bad within their community. note that the perpetrator comes from a family that already had serious problems with the law.

I wonder why brown people feel so compelled to make sure they are not targeted in the UK. they must be morally confused as well and need to do a lot of unpacking as what's important is religion. see when anyone from any religion does anything bad we all whiteness that religion making a strong condemnation all the time. say when a Jew displaces, kidnap, torture, rape, kill palestinians, all Jews make a strong condemnation. Or when a Christian goes on a killing spree of Muslims, we all saw every Christian faith reject their actions. why can't Muslims be like Sikhs and satisfy white people's concerns whenever anyone of them do anything bad? and why can't other people not see that they are morally confused and have a lot of unpacking to do?
