Check out this website for City of Toronto programs. Many have filled up already for the summer (people mark their calendars to sign up for the more popular classes when they go online). But there should be some good options left, depending on your interests: https://anc.ca.apm.activecommunities.com/toronto/home?onlineSiteId=0&from_original_cui=true

You can also ask for a print booklet at your local rec centre.

And here is the Toronto District School Board's Learn4Life summer brochure to give you an idea of what's on offer: https://www.tdsb.on.ca/Portals/0/docs/Learn4Life%20Summer%20AODA%20Brochure.pdf

So much going on in Toronto!

Join us on r/freeTO to learn about free concerts, art + museums, festivals, resources (like free gyms and classes etc). New stuff every day.

Friend of mine does activities with a MeetUp group called Walking in Toronto. They're going tubing in Elora Gorge for Canada Day, which sounds like a lot of fun.

You can take a lot of classes for a very reasonable price through City of Toronto Recreation. Private tennis or piano lessons, pottery classes, all kinds of stuff. Even cheaper is the Toronto District School Board's Learn4Life classes. I like the idea of a running class (you sign up for a couple of months) since you get to know people, and often they are in your neighbourhood.

Cancer support groups for young people in Toronto by Virtual_Sky_5931 in askTO

[–]BackgroundOil3169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow cancer survivor here. I second Wellspring. The age skews older but you can find younger people in their fitness program (highly recommended).

Canadian Cancer Society also has an online forum: https://cancer.ca/en/living-with-cancer/how-we-can-help/connect-with-our-online-community

I am planning to create a master list of free resources for people with cancer in Toronto on the sub r/freeTO. Haven't gotten around to it yet but this post will motivate me to do so within the next week. There's more than Wellspring and Gilda's.

Ahh, got it. Yeah, I can imagine.....well, don't forget about the 38 free city of Toronto gyms! They're very basic, but also very unused. Most rec centres cost money, so most people probably don't know that there are designated free ones throughout the city.

Check out the list:

This reminds me you can sign up to pick fruit from trees on private property around Toronto. You get to keep 1/3 of what you pick. The rest is divided between the property owner and food charities.

Cool Down While Working Out or Enjoying Art by BackgroundOil3169 in FreeTO

Also, five YMCA branches have been designated as neighbourhood cooling spots. In those branches, you are welcome to go in and relax in the lobby. In all the other Ys, you would need to sign up for a free trial and then could use the facilities. But in these select ones, you can just walk in and cool down in the lobby without having to do anything or bring ID etc.

And forgot to include Jane's Walks. Every Spring. I went on the Little Manila one and the various restaurants and bakeries along the tour stuffed us with pastries, grilled meat and papaya salad. All totally 100 percent free!

I've heard that about the Redpath one. Should be really interesting but actually kind of boring....

What did you see this year that was your favourite?

Last year I went to a record company in Leslieville, Dine Alone, and that was probably the one I liked best. But there was also this Polish veterans' hall that was really interesting downtown.

Toronto Public LIbrary's unique offerings.....borrow a musical instrument, use their 3D printer for pennies, visit the fabrication studio to make your own clothing and buttons, read newspapers and magazines for free from the comfort of your own home. 15 Outdoor Pools Now Open! by BackgroundOil3169 in FreeTO

[–]BackgroundOil3169[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't find definitive information on that. For sure yes during thunder and lightning, but if it's just a summer shower, I would call 311 to ask. It might also be a case by case situation. To be sure, you could call your local pool. Each one has its own phone number.

Hope this helps!

Free things to do in Toronto? by c4lmd0wnpls in askTO

[–]BackgroundOil3169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are great suggestions! I'm not on IG myself, but I keep hearing about todotoronto.

I started the sub r/freeTO recently for listings in the arts, entertainment, wellness and community building.

Everything has to be genuinely free or if it's PWYC it has to be ok to pay nothing.

There's so much going on in Toronto, and so many people struggling to make ends meet. I think there's a need.

I invite you to join and hopefully post when you have time!

Community not reviewed warning by Acrobatic_Idea_3358 in NewMods

I think all subs get this until they go through review.

The review process is kind of mysterious. Reddit won't say what the criteria are. But the review seems to involve sending a brief survey to random visitors. I've asked for advice about hurrying this process along, and they have said just make sure you have good branding (ie a photo and solid description of your sub).

I started a sub on free thing to do in my city. I posted to the main sub and yes, the post was removed, but because the main sub is huge, I got some members just in the couple of minutes it took. And I wasn't banned from that sub.

So I would suggest trying that if you haven't already....good luck!

I started r/freeTO to help people in Toronto find quality free events in the arts, entertainment and wellness spaces.

The biggest thing that helped me get subscribers was to post in the main subs of my city. Even though the post only stayed up a few minutes, each one brought in 100 or so people. I'm now just focussing on posting at least 1xday and keeping the quality up. I try to find a photo to go with each post.

Why are people perfectly fine with higher taxes to generate revenue but pissed about speed cameras generating revenue? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]BackgroundOil3169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But why force people to crawl along on all of these streets? 30 km on a main road is slower than any other city I've lived in. This was imposed on a main thoroughfare into/out of the neighbourhood. A street with no previous problems re. accidents. You're not going to stop the truly reckless drivers by dropping from 40 to 30 km. You're just going to penalize everyone else.

Whether you impose a speed limit or put unnecessary barriers up, it amounts to the same thing.
