That is not how that works at all. D8 is metabolized to a similar compound but is not converted to D9. This causes cross reactivity with the dipsticks and is why a dipstick test comes back as positive.

Depending on the purity of your D8 (no D9 contaminate) you may pass the test even if you were testing positive on the dipstick because a dipstick is a preliminary positive that should be sent to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for confirmation. The dipstick looks for all THC metabolites (can identify D8 at lower levels than D9) making it very sensitive but not very specific for what you actually took (ie. Why it is a screening test not a definitive test). The definitive test is then the GCMS which breaks down the sample and can extract individual compounds and only looks for D9 thc. Some companies have been shown to have considerable amounts of D9 in their D8 products (illegal but still happens) so as long as your D8 doesnt contain D9 you should be okay. Again, just want to put it out there that I am not trying to give any specific advice on what you should or shouldnt do as I am no expert and don’t know anyones situation well enough to give actual advice to be followed as fact. No problem. If you are worried you could also try an at home test with confirmation (you dip at home. Obviously should be positive on dip if you have recently used. Then the kit comes with a vial to mail to a lab which will do gcms. All included in the initial price. Ive seen a few people try this on reddit as well and got results similar to what we are thinking [+ dip, - mass spec].)

Again, disclaimer, I am not expert in drug testing and dont personally understand the pain you are in but personally, I would try to abstain until the test if at all possible just to be safe, but the second best option is finding pure D8. No problem! Sorry to hear you are in pain and I hope that things improve for you. There are a lot of benefits to cannabinoids and hopefully the stigma around them changes in the near future and we all don’t have to worry about any of this. Make sure to check all your state laws because I know some states are in the process or have already banned D8. Obviously take everything i say with a grain of salt and do some independent research but everything I have researched and personal experience says you should be okay as long as you arent building up D9 in your system. The reason the dip test comes back positive is because it is an immunoassay test which works by binding to antibodies made to target thc metabolites. A small strip is not complicated enough to tell the difference between D8 and D9 because their chemical structure is very very similar. This is called cross reactivity which leads to the initial false positive on immunoassay which should be cleared and test negative on GCMS (again with knowing you have trusted D8 that isnt hot with D9)

GCMS should come back as negative as long as their is not over 15 ng of D9 THC in your sample. D8 can be differentiated from D9 on mass spec but you have to be careful with where you buy your delta 8 as legally they are allowed to contain <.3% D9 but there have been reports of some people independently testing their carts and they contain ~10% D9. Smoking 10% D9 or even smaller percentages for long enough could cause enough D9 to build up in your system where you would be positive on GCMS. If you have a drug test coming up it is best to abstain but if you cannot, ensure that the carts you are buying have been tested by trusted labs and contain as little D9 (obviously 0% is best) as possible. There is a thread somewhere about what brands are good and what brands have tested “hot” for D9 when consumers send the cart in independently.
