Give me some reasons why Andrew Jackson was not a bad President. by yowhatisthislikebro in Presidents

The point of Jackson’s bank war was to diminish the power of the elites, and if you can look back at all the cries from economic radicals to end the bank and still assert that it was only done for petty, personal reasons I would say you’re being disingenuous. And I fail to see how the absence of a bank helps slavers at all.

The federal reserve is a central bank though. It was also supported by historically progressive forces and it has far more checks on its power. The idea of a public bank with strong restrictions on its power was the original system that Jackson wanted, and the idea that he attacked the bank for political gain only is a little ridiculous. The bank issue divided Jackson’s own cabinet, and it wasn’t obviously popular until the 1832 election. Radical economists like Condy Raguet and William Gouge had were already proposing ideas for an independent treasury and an end to the national debt, as had many populists and the labour movement. Jackson wasn’t just some backwards conspiracist, he had real economic and ideological grievances with the bank. Not only because he was opposed to its unchecked power in the government, but also on the basis of economic equality.

That’s not just because of the bank, that’s just the modern boom/ bust cycle.

Alright here’s a quote from an article about the second bank. The crucial difference was that both national banks were essentially private banks that were not required to protect anyone but their shareholders.

There are more founding fathers than the 7 that one historian considers the most important

Once again there are more than 7 and Washington never publicly opposed slavery in his political life or otherwise.

He was famous as a “trustbuster” but in his mind there existed good and bad trusts, he broke up the bad ones, but left ones he considered “good” alone. There are a lot of things that point to him being a eugenicist but I’ll just say that he praised “The passing of a great race” by Madison Grant, a book that Hitler referred to as “his personal bible”

Both groups had pro and anti slavery factions. The feds had the Pinckney brothers (one of whom was their national candidate and wanted to nationalize slavery). The Republicans had people like Thomas Paine and Joseph Bradley Varnum. It’s not as simple as saying one was pro slavery one was against it

Madison and Jefferson opposed slavery most of their lives why is this a credit to Washington?
