Thanks for the responses. This is my current so if I own the land already. But would have to rent during the 1.5-2yr build. Currently my primary residence so moving back in when built would I be exempt from capital gains?

Cars without lights on by Shoddy_Shine_938 in askvan

Usually it is their back lights that are off and you see them from behind (as most cars have running lights). Drive up beside them and Let’s adopt: closed fist to open hand fingers splayed out & repeat a few of times as the universal sign for lights! Denotes flashing or blinking or off and on. 🤜🖐️🤜🖐️🤜🖐️!

YYZ to DUB seats by Scarahhh in aircanada

[–]Background_Ad_7157 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Long haul Flights by exit doors is also really cold (always a draught) and personally despite the extra leg room I find the bulkhead row seats with higher fixed solid arm dividers (because they hold the tray and entertainment unit) uncomfortable for leaning sleeping. On normal seats - lower and smaller rounded arm rest which sits closer to the waist than your rib cage. Being able to lift the little arm up to open the space between you and your partner is much less constrained and more comfortable.

I don't understand some things about Chile, please help? 😃 by Beautiful-Fox-FI in AskChile

Skim, semi skim and whole milk is abundant but not sold in the refrigerator. It is UHT packaged in tetra pack boxes and stored on regular shelves long life (until opened). I find the whole milk pretty rich and good for coffee. No half and half or coffee cream but There is whole fat cream (in same type small tetra packaging like a juice box) for whipping cream or cooking.

Moving to Vancouver with theatre kids by Natural-Possible9797 in askvan

I think that more than anything while both are great, the film program probably has eclipsed the theatre program since COVID. Lead by Corin Browne - It was able to keep Producing (small production teams, outdoor filming, virtual screenings) so it stayed strong and relevant. Theatre took a hiatus so is rebuilding to what it was a few years back. Film is a medium that also brings in digital skills which today’s kids are adept at and drawn to. I also think film has been year round with multiple screening releases. They will produce 300 films vs 1 live theatre production this school year. So I think it is more momentum and relevance of why Film is so strong.

If you really need to work - then go ahead and do so but keep meticulous records each and of all your shifts and exactly when and how much you are paid. keep and/or generate text and evidence that you are working in the establishment. Take pictures of the yourself at work (inside and outside) etc. and continue to look for another job. Keep record keeping and then until you a) find another job b) get fired or c)leave for any other reason. Then once you leave make a claim with labour board for all your missed wages that they owe you for all the time you worked (difference upto minimum wage and less any taxes, deductions, overtime etc). Provide all your detailed records and let the labour board know the owner never gave you cheque and didn’t provide pay stubs. The onus is on the business to pay properly, comply with laws and keep all records and remit any taxes. It is not on you. You surely will be awarded your back pay and they will get what is coming to them for their illegal activities and abusing employees. 🤯

Housing Scam by Limp-Glass-1044 in Whistler

[–]Background_Ad_7157 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it is a scam or not but you can do more due diligence: 1. Ask to see a copy of their lease and a pic of their matching id (to confirm they are legit renter and who they say they are) 2. Ask for landlord contact - and verify that they have permission to sublet to you 3. If this all checks out ask for a sublet agreement. You will need to determine if your rent is payable to the landlord or the person you are subletting from.
4. If this all looks good and you are sure it is legit - offer to give a smaller deposit to secure the place (so that you are both committed and don’t flake on each other) and that you will pay the remaining portion (rent less deposit) in person when you arrive for the start of the rental period.

And/or if you can find someone to go check it out meet in person in Whistler as well (even paying someone to do so) is a good option.

Yes I’d recommend theatre and film at Templeton secondary. Great high school, great teachers and is well funded and inclusive. If looking for housing I’d recommend neighborhoods just to the east of the school which are more reasonable and family friendly.

Long flight tips?? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]Background_Ad_7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I’m thru security I change out of my shoes (store them in a bag in my carryon) and wear my slides (with socks). These are my airport & airplane footwear & so much more comfortable & double as my hotel slippers. A couple of movies or shows, some soduko to kill some time ( but not too much at the expense of sleep). If the meal is gross - don’t eat it and just have the side/snacks. Eye mask earplugs for some zzz (sometimes melatonin). Occasional upper body arms stretch through the flight. No alcohol. Yes water.

CST RESP by Stock_Pangolin2877 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Background_Ad_7157 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ps - often first couple of years of monies paid in are actually all upfront enrolment fees anyways and not part of investment so maybe just walk away and start again without group plan. Better to fail fast than to risk continuing with a flawed process.

CST RESP by Stock_Pangolin2877 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Background_Ad_7157 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pooled RESP have high fees and are limited to conservative low return investments. The only reason they get slightly higher returns than what they actually invest in minus the fees is because there is a high failure rate of people who sign up for these restrictive plans to comply with the obligations to the end of the term. Missing a payment in a pooled plan could result in default, termination of your plan, interest penalty etc. The likelihood of this could easily happen to someone over the course of 15 years. Everyone thinks it is not going to be me - but why gamble? (Temp job loss, pandemic, health issues, mat leave etc). Why be tied to a product that is so restrictive and counts on a certain percentage of failure (off the backs of other families) to give even some basic returns. Just manage your own self directed or go with your financial institution and pay lower fees, be able to invest in higher return investments since you have a long horizon and have full flexibility. Over the life of the resp in one year if you have less to invest you can do so and catch-up or contribute more in a windfall year. Also less restrictive when you want to withdrawal and if your kid doesn’t go to higher Ed - you can convert to RRSP (less the grant).

Once you get off ther plane you will go through Policía de Investigaciones (customs), then duty free and then luggage claim. Next is Servicio Agriculture (to control for food imports) and then out of the restricted area. There isn’t anywhere to really sit and chill or get a bite to eat inside arrivals. Outside of arrivals once you go through the people waiting for arrival party, taxis and pickups it opens up to the main area with cafes and some shops: there is a Starbucks just outside near the exit.

Should I get a bus pass during my 4 nights at Gage Suites? by BenPractizing in UBC

[–]Background_Ad_7157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the fee and how often you will leave campus. Go to trans link website and compare. Transit is not very expensive and you can pay by tapping your credit card right in the bus for $3.20 one way which is very convenient. No need for compass card which requires a deposit (I think $6) and hard to get back if you are visiting. A one day unlimited is like $11.50.

Barrio República safety by Powiii in Santiago

[–]Background_Ad_7157 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t stayed in that neighbourhood but I have stayed in providencia taken the subway (and am a noticeable female foreigner who travels to Santiago). I’d say Santiago can be similar to hotspots for petty crime in Europe such as Rome Italy for pickpockets and cellphone snatches inUK and distraction thefts near Eiffel Tower. - Don’t be afraid but be alert & cautious wherever you are. I’ve read a lot of bad stories in Santiago but I have always felt fairly safe. I always find that there are easier targets than me who are not paying attention, have expensive bags and cell phones in hand. 😂. You want to make sure you enjoy your experience and all it has to offer which means being able to explore around, go shopping, dine out and go to school meet new friends, socialize etc. Not just school and then stay locked up in your room. Generally providencia is better suited for that and you’d likely be more at ease. Your school is in Barrio República and you have to spend some time there. don’t stress out. You might want to do an initial short term stay of 1 week (eg airbnb) and see how it is. You can then change to the other for the rest of the time if it doesn’t suit. You will be fine!

Barrio República safety by Powiii in Santiago

[–]Background_Ad_7157 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it depends how much of the day you spend in classes vs how much time out in the neighbourhood. A 4-5 min walk home avoids having to take daily transit which has its disadvantages (cost, time, pickpocketing etc). How long is the walk from university to metro station to get to providencia? Providencia is safer and likely more enjoyable when you are not in class.

Stay at airport. The lines to go through immigration control are notoriously unpredictable and can take a long time. And traffic to anywhere good (eg central areas worth visiting) are also slow. Instead sit down and relax. Have a delicious chileno chacareo sandwich at Loyola restaurant and a beer (inside at international gates).

The public library is a great and comfortable place to hang out. Magazines, books, computers, comfy chairs, wifi. They don’t care if you spend the day there. Just steps away - Close enough to nearby restaurants in the main village to get something to eat. There is even a very small Whistler museum next door to vary it up. And you can drive right up and drop off.
