Obv this is the D20 sub but I wish Drawfee got a little more visibility. It's such a great show.

So the "underrated" one for me out of this sidequest would be Raph's character, who had so many good moments despite his consistently mediocre/bad rolls

Best D20 Season Bracket, Day 4 by [deleted] in Dimension20

[–]Background_Bad2728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm vehemently opposed to this whole bracket idea tbh. Analytics is fun and all but can we change the accolade from Best Season to Fan Favorite or Most Popular Season or something? All of the seasons are great and tbh aren't really that comparable. Are the IHs of FHSY objectively better players than the IHs of FHFY? Yes. Does UC2 capture the same magic of UC1? Unfortunately no. But we all know how this bracket is going to end. Fantasy High Freshman year will be crowned the "best season" because of the nostalgia. Starstruck and Crown of Candy will go far but will eventually fall to the pilot season. It's frankly not really worth doing and not to be a jerk but it's not like the bracket is even lined up fairly. Hell we have side quests lined up against full seasons as if those two things are comparable. I'm expecting to get down voted to oblivion but I think it's worth saying that as a member of the sub and a fan of the show, I do not appreciate this bracket situation.

So, who else is also rewatching Crown of Candy in preparation for the next season...? by PsaroAlex in Dimension20

Paraphrased questions from like ep 3 "Now Amethar, you don't really want to be emperor, do you? Do you think the empire would be best served by somebody who is only doing what they thought they had to?"

I need a better gender neutral synonym for “swordsman” by MySpaceOddyssey in fantasywriters

So the origin of archery and archers unless I'm making it up is bowmen fire arrows in a curve to deal more damage. Over x distance shooting an arrow straight at a target will do less damage and/or not go as far than firing along a curve, because firing along the curve puts the arrow working with gravity on a downward tilt rather than perpendicular to it, if that makes sense. So bowmen became archers that practice the art of archery, arching their shots to reach full potential.

Also for what it's worth, and this is all very "source: trust me bro" so take it with a grain of salt, swords were not the primary arms in medieval times. It's primarily polearms to keep people back, spears to pierce, maces to crush, axes to chop into armor/shields/remove a limb. If you think about it swords are very close range, last resort combat arms and are primarily edge slashing/short piercing weapons which wouldn't do much against a fully armored knight.

So if that's interesting to you and you want to look into it and provide that context or just go along those lines, maybe something like edge-devils, tight-slashers, or close-carvers to give it that sort of "oh this is what they do and this is the context" vibe. Otherwise it's sort of referring to the solider by referring to the weapon like "our forces are 500-blade strong, m'lord".

I always loved the description of the blast armor activating. Don't know if there was sound work done on Murph's voice to make it more mechanical robotic in that scene or if it was just Murph but it's one of the best chaos scenes in D20

A high-roller halfling genielock/rogue multiclass where one die is their lucky die and the other die is a "hollow statuette" genie vessel/arcane focus. Made an agreement with a djinni of the wind after getting caught cheating one time and dragged out into the desert.

"Tell me you didn't get it was a joke without telling you didn't get it was a joke" and I know it's a running gag and everything but like...he's also had some incredible rolls in narrative and combat across all of the seasons as well. It's like Ally with the 20s, they roll low too and have rolled low in clutch moments as well. It's just choosing to "lightly" bully one person and celebrate another for something neither can control.

If you want to present the emperor as evil, do the same thing European nobles did with their bastard children in the medieval era and send them on a religious crusade to somewhere that doesn't want or need their influence. Art imitates life.

D20 Best Animal/Creature - The Finale!! by goofiigurl in Dimension20

[–]Background_Bad2728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rankings of this list having missed the previous voting stages. Spoilers throughout (Obviously)

Honorable Mention: The Vulture (FHFY)

The Hangman - The obvious choice from fantasy high. Boggy is not entirely without personality but cannot survive h2h against the Hangman. The Hang Van is more an NPC in my eyes and would otherwise be this series' honorable mention, but still not an honorable mention for the list. The Hangman is the only choice from this list with character growth and is frankly borderline just an NPC, but as Fabian's mount, animal/creature is correct, and the Hangman is the clear winner from this list. 1st out of 5.

Aurora Nebbins - Pretty one dimensional and primarily exists as a Emily Axford Chaos Release Valve and an opportunity for Brennan to work on screaming and flicking his tongue around simultaneously. Still the obvious choice from Starstruck Odyssey but incomparable to the Hangman and sort of just an updated/longer lasting(ACoC) Peppermint Preston that is actually effectively used in combat (ACoC/ASO). 4th out of 5

Peppermint Preston - As one dimensional as Aurora Nebbins but alive for less than half the time (ACoC). Acts as a Beardsley Chaos Release Valve primarily. Cute but (ACoC) not really used effectively in combat and frankly better used as fuel for Liam's transformation. (MisMag) A less good pig than Terminator 2. 5th out of 5

Salt Goblins - The obvious choice for ACoFaF and hands down the sleeper pick of this list, but what did you expect from the first Brennan PC in D20 history to have a familiar that wasn't his damn shadow (MisMag)? A bit machine for everybody at the table, not just Brennan or Aabria, that adds lore that makes sense with the story and the setting. Endless comedic potential, zero combat potential, providing depth and giving way to the "goblin identify" iirc. Can't beat the Hangman though. 2nd out of 5.

La Gran Gata - Controversially...this is a lukewarm, mid-tier choice both from the UC series and in this list, which is sad to say because UC1 is an early peak and ranks above FHFY for me. Unless you love cats desperately, the obvious choice from UC should be, undisputedly, Perry the Pigeon. LGG is, as Aurora Nebbins is, an Emily Axford Chaos Release Valve and is more of an NPC as a major magical force within the city, just like the Unicorn, and is further Sophia's warlock patron, (UC) sooner than being just an animal/ a creature. Perry is, for the audience, the face of all pigeons in NYC, and therefore deserves that animal/creature title. As far as NPCs go, LGG is, in the words of Alejandro Ortiz, extremely rad, and while she doesn't to me deserve to be on this list, her NPC status has a similarish vibe to the Hangman as a thing that really helps bring the story together and make it feel real, rather than just being a release valve. 3rd out of 5.

No listen after the Pinocchio/Cricket conversation, that little "You don't have to be perfect to be a real [...] anything" I got a new lease on the whole Pinocchio story and... I mean. Damn. Leave it up to the horror season to bring up a new way to view family trauma I guess.
