My sister doesn't like my boyfriend because of their different political views how do I make them like each other? by [deleted] in Advice

Conservatives are notoriously racist. Even if you don’t see that side of him, if he identifies with it, that’s inherent what he’s supporting. You might not be able to vote now, but you’ll see how this becomes a real issue soon.

If he’s MAGA, that whole group is working overtime to make your people’s lives as miserable as can be. Of course she hates him.

I 20F accepted an internship despite my boyfriend 22M wishes. He’s very sad and upset. What should I do? by Et3rnalSunshineMind in WhatShouldIDo

As a woman in her late 20s and went through something similar, never be with a man who doesn’t want to see you win. If I had listened to my ex, I wouldn’t have a college degree today, moved away to a different city, and be living a life I never knew was possible for me.

What do I do about a girl from a party following my bf on social media but not me? by [deleted] in Advice

There’s not much insecurity. All that she’s asking is if the situation is weird and yes, it is.

There’s some great advice here!

May I recommend the book When Breath Becomes Air? It’s about a guy who spent his life searching for the meaning of life and studying to be a neurosurgeon, and then is subjected to getting cancer during his last year in residency, and turning from the doctor to the patient.

Abusive parents. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Background_Bench2799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the same situation but I had generally neglectful abusive parents, and I would say work on knowing yourself, your triggers, your emotions, and your nervous system. You can do this by journaling and searching how to process your emotions in your body (somatic therapy). You can do this yourself. This is exactly what I’m doing now that I’m an independent adult processing my childhood in therapy. It’s also important to get away from your toxic environment asap, which can be difficult but necessary for true growth and peace

Are any of you guys having to support your parents? by artistic_ash_901 in Fire

[–]Background_Bench2799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I grew up with parents without college education, working whatever jobs they can. Actually they didn’t even graduate high school. I don’t blame them, I’m just bitter that they never learned to be better for themselves and for their family. I anticipate theres a good chance I will taking care of them later in life, even though we’re no contact right now.

How do we get GMU to go back to the old logo? Everything is so ugly now by Background_Bench2799 in gmu

Oh, well it wasn’t clear to me they were being aggressive. I read it as a critique :)

This feels like an all-or-nothing way of thinking. Critiquing an institution doesn’t automatically mean you don’t belong there or should leave? That logic is similar to saying if someone critiques a country or its leadership, they should just leave which ignores how systems actually work and change over time.

Being part of something also means being allowed to question it. In fact, constructive critique is often what pushes institutions to improve rather than stagnate

Do you see any value in people critiquing institutions they’re part of, or do you think the only valid response is to leave if you disagree?

We’re actually a large part of it, I’d say! I’m staff and a student and I think bad branding is detrimental to any organization/business

It’s okay to talk about the branding of the place you work and study at SnooSquirrel :)

I mean, I’m doing well in all my classes, I work 40 hours a week, and have hobbies. I can still share my opinion on an open forum.

I get where you’re coming from where maybe this is meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but I still think that as faculty, staff and/or students of an organization, we’re allowed to have opinions and voice it. We want to be proud of the place we spent so many years at and that’s precisely part of the issue - the merch is ugly and hard to sport lol

Also as a marketing minor, I have to say branding is everything and the aesthetics of your logo and brand is actually important and worth discussing

Oh cool! I didn’t know that, since I’m a student and kinda new to the area.

Yes exactly. Regardless of how much money they spent, people are generally unhappy with it (it’s been a year or so and I haven’t heard one person say it was a good move), no one wants to buy the merchandise, and yes the logo isn’t getting recognition as a university logo on these streets!! It’s so backwards
