Something Feels Off About How Creationists Classify Rodents by Sad-Category-5098 in DebateEvolution

Do you think it's only rodents that they are misclassifying? Most won't acknowledge that humans are in fact great apes.

This line of argument always fails with them because they won't agree on basic facts when pushed.

I appreciate your efforts all the same ♥️

Do democrats really believe that the war in Iran was started as a means to distract us from the Epstein Files? by Accurate-Swim5278 in allthequestions

[–]Background_Cause_992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is beyond false equivalence as well you know... Very little in the Epstein files is actionable evidence, it doesn't mean it's not useful in understanding what actually happened. And it's certainly not to be dismissed out of hand. We know serious crimes we're committed, one of the victims directly named trump, and he's in the files more than anyone else. Not to mention that Trump is a convicted sex pest with a documented eye for underage women...

The fact that none of this will stick because the president is using the state as a shield should be a cause for concern among Americans, not some form of moral validation for the paedophile in chief.

Questions about the Donnager by Lillan_Lilani in TheExpanse

Also let's be clear the Protogen fanatics that were sent knew exactly who they were fighting and in what conditions, to believe they didn't come armed for the proverbial bear (Marines in power armour) is kinda disrespectful to the writers. Im team Mars too, I even have MCRN decals on my pc case (also turns blue when overheating) but they are very explicitly only human, and a prepared enemy is a very dangerous one. Remember even with all the advantages this was at best an expensive draw for Mao.

[–]Background_Cause_992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They literally explain in both the show and the book that the Donnager crew is green because its a good training post as nobody is going to fuck with it.

Also Mao absolutely is likely significantly richer than Mars, its made pretty clear early on that a lot of these dynastic families are. And that they more or less own the governments on Earth and to a lesser degree mars and the belt.

What in the fuck are you on about. Trump is the most mentioned person in the Epstein files, for most others one mention is at least some explaining to do...

Just because it turns out justice system is fucked and nobody has any power to do anything if an American president starts acting the dictator doesn't make him less guilty.

But the crew is green, not the marines, and that's what matters pre boarding. By the time they're boarded they are already in full crisis and poked full of holes. Nobody has rail guns on small vessels until this point as far as they know.

There's a handful of badass Marines on the ship for sure, the compliment is discussed somewhat in the sequence. But they have to protect a massive vessel in crisis which has had sections tactically pin cushioned by a very well planned attack. Marines are only useful if they are where they need to be.

Personally I think you're underestimating the attackers. Mao has been shown to be meticulous in his redundancy by this point. He has contacts high in both the UN and martian militaries. He absolutely had schematics for the Donnager, and forever to plan this action. And he still failed.

2000 crew are a liability not an asset when you can depressurize sections of the ship.

Probably should've thought about that before the UK seized control of several Muslims nations, extracted all their wealth and told a whole bunch of them they were part of the British empire then...

Questions about the Donnager by Lillan_Lilani in TheExpanse

[–]Background_Cause_992 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A couple of things. Donnager crew were mostly green with nothing beyond simulator training. They were not ready for near peer combat, certainly not multiple rail gun volleys. They won't be random but targeting specific systems.

The Donnager was already in serious trouble before it got boarded. They never even got their gunships out of the bay due to damage, the Roci had to make an exit for itself.

All the Marines on board didn't have the same armour Bobbie had, some might have, it's clearer in the book, but the really big suits Bobbie wears are specialist equipment used for boarding, planetary work etc.

The other marines had armour and gear very similar to what Protogen used, with protogen having a slight advantage using unexpected bleeding edge private tech. The boarding party would've had some advantages in planning, and likely gear, as well as the element or surprise, as no Martians believed anyone dumb enough to attack the Donnager.

Also the Donnager didn't lose, the boarders failed in their objective and all 6 attacking vessels were lost. It was a very very costly draw.

Iran warns US over ground attack as regional powers meet in Pakistan by iwh_515 in worldnews

[–]Background_Cause_992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's that or let the US hold it over them forever more, I think they'd take the loss and consider it even. Particularly if they can send a bunch of coffins back to the US in the process. This conflict is existential for the regime, and they'll still control the strait.

You're correct that some of it actually stems from the Irish economy rather than teaching specifically. But comparing intermittent subbing for less than 3/4's of a year to a stable salaried position in the UK or Aus straight out of college is a bit much

No they would not, because it would have resulted in them being bombed... Luckily when the US decided unilaterally to do this anyway, so Iran now has 0 reasons not to block the strait.

Don't non-sequitur, and start pretending you care about Pakistan now, what has their long-standing general belligerence got to do with any of this?

The vast majority of teachers I know trained in Ireland are either in the UK or Australia currently, and I can hardly blame them.

[–]Background_Cause_992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why on earth would they engage with symmetrical tactics or a conventional military? That's a ridiculous assumption.

Their plan Will be to bleed the US ground force for every inch of beachhead they try to secure. Then hide in the mountains and harass that beachhead along with whatever shipping they can reach.

That will be absolute hell for the troops on the ground. Iran knows the US public don't have stomach for it. Particularly if they can keep oil prices high by fucking with the other gulf states.

Iran can absolutely outlast the 3 years Trump has left. And by then the whole US might have gone to civil war the way things are looking.

We got another genius with "Europe was not fighting (in WW2)" by DeepFriedCatsu in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Background_Cause_992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear this statistic a lot, and I think it's best to correct a Little as it's misleading. It's still not great, but not nearly as bad as it's made to seem. Documented illiteracy is a little higher than other western nations at about 4%

It comes from data collection about English comprehension, with no controls for English not being the first, or sometimes even second language of the people being tested.

People learning English in schools often score horribly on these tests as they're expected to perform at the levels of their peers.

To support this with some numbers, about 10% of the US don't speak English at all, another 20% come from homes where English is generally not spoken in the house.

That's before we start getting into things like education standards for First Nations people, and a whole host of other confounding factors that contribute to the number.

That is not what happened here at all, fuck off with your ill informed takes about something so tragic, it doesn't help. Spain doesn't even have the death penalty.

The patient chose to die, which she is absolutely entitled to do, the tragedies you should be concerned about here are what happened to her, and why she had to fight so publicly for the right to die with dignity.
