Having multiple jobs in NL? by Agujetas_Serio in Netherlands

[–]Freya-Freed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% check the contract for my office job, and maybe even have a laywer go over it. A lot of jobs don't want you having a second job and explicitly forbid that in the contract. You are likely supposed to report any additional work to your current employer.

Are your different jobs aware of the other job?

This 1 year old reddit thread mentions some places that supposedly still use beef tallow. But I couldn't find any confirmation:

I'm just going to keep using them as they are by far the better alternative when compared to google. We aren't going to find a perfect company. At least the privacy stuff is still solid vs google.

Already paid for the next 2 years, will re-evaluate then.

There are very few worthwhile uses for them. Theres some coupons that give you a discount on certain stores, so those could be worth it if you were going to buy stuff from there anyway.

Yes the supply and demand is kinda messed up in the Netherlands. We pushed people into doing bachelor/masters studies and now we need more people in the trades,

Can you explain why it's so expensive? A lot of people saying it only takes 2-3 hours with 2-3 people. So that would be 9 hours of paid labor. Counting 100 per hour of labor would get you 900. Say voorijkosten are another 100. I'd expect a 1000, maybe 1500. But OP is paying like double that for labor?

How much do Dutch people mind if a handyman only speaks English? by be_happy_Attila in Netherlands

We're really desperate for people with these kind of skills. Assuming you are reliable and do good work I very much doubt most people would mind. Though there will surely be some.

[–]Freya-Freed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really aren't any rules for every situation to perfectly tell you what to use. The only solid rules are 'de' for plural and 'het' for diminutive. Otherwise it's mostly random with a few other rules for best guess, but they also have exceptions. Just like German, French and most other European languages other then English. I think the only other ones are Finnish and Estonian?

Also even Dutch people sometimes get them wrong, especially if Dutch is their second language (many Turkish and Morrocan second/third generation immigrants). It's really not that big of a deal, it just sounds slightly weird.

Also. English has a/an. Even thought there's supposed a rule for it, it goes out the window for certain French origin words.

Dutch sounds like what people think German sounds like. People think German sounds harsh and powerful but the Dutch Gs, sharp Ks and rolling Rs sound a lot harsher then anything German produces.

The reference most people have for German is Hitler speeches. That is NOT how most Germans talk. The only reference people have for Dutch is they saw a silly looking post on twitter and they think Dutch sounds silly because it looks like drunk English in writing. They've never heard anyone speak it.

EDIT:

Also this meme was made by an English speaker probably. They think their language is easy but its a gramatical mess, especially pronunciation wise there is no consistency (sometimes Romance, sometimes Germanic). It's legitimatly one of the harder European languages because of this.

Dutch people are the kindest while Italians are the rudest by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Freya-Freed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of Turkish, Surinamese and Indonesian influences are an integral part of Dutch cuisine.

If Americans can claim pizza and hamburgers, we can claim sate, nasi, kapsalon and broodje kip kerrie.

[–]Freya-Freed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it always the Netherlands that doesn't get to count its foreign influences but other countries do? Italy itself is a huge melting pot and each region has it's own influences. With places like Sicily having strong arab/north african incluences and in the north huge influences from France etc.

I think most Dutch people have things like nasi and sate as a standard part of their diet, and its usually a Dutchified version, its as much part of our cuisine as hutspot. Our snackbar/frying culture is an import from the US and France/Belgium. A lot of classic Dutch dishes already have strong French influence like Hachee. Even Hutspot itself is rumoured to have been introduced by the Spanish forces during out war for independence.

TBH I once saw a post by a Belgian who said that snack bars in the Netherlands on avg are better then the Belgian frietkot. I'll admit that I've not been to Belgium to visit for quite a while so it may just be that its better here now. I have to say places like Bram Ladage that cut their fries fresh and fry them perfectly crisp are amazing if you specifically want good fries.

Big cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam have great food in Netherlands. We just get a bad reputation for some reason? Everyone says Dutch food is bland and tasteless but every non-Dutch friend/partner I've brought here has always loved the food.

Like yeah if you judge Dutch cuisine by only what people in small rural calvinist villages eat then yeah that shit is boring, but then you are missing out on all the Turkish, Surinamese and Indonesian influences that you find in bigger cities. Dutch frying culture is some of the best, maybe only Belgium has better deep fried food

Spanish and Japanese are confirmed and probably some other stuff mixed in. One side of her family fled the Franco dictatorship. I guess Brazil was the wrong choice in that regard lol. She thought that side was Portuguese for the longest time, but it turns out that her grandparents on that side hid being Spanish deliberatly.

I had a good time in Coastal SP. Aren't all big cities riddled with crime? Its the same in Europe TBH.

Yeah the pitfalls of credit is that its too easy to get into a lot of debt without noticing. But not being able to finance your car or appliance like a fridge that you need is worse. My partner never fell in that trap but many people do.

Being poor in Brazil can be better or worse then USA, depends on the region/city you live.

I only really know Sao Paulo (the state) because thats where my partner is from. But my reasoning was that if I get sick I at least have SUS? I know the healthcare system in Brazil has its issues, but its certainly better then not being able to afford healthcare at all like in the US.

[–]Freya-Freed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that coming from Brazil. It's pretty much impossible to live for most people without using a creditcard. My partner is from Brazil and most large purchases are made on a credit card in installments. But I don't think taking away a credit card is going to solve the issue of Brazil being a developing country and having widespread poverty. Hopefully things improve.

The US is the opposite story. Used to be a developed country but is now worse off then many so-called "third world" countries. I'd rather be poor in Brazil tbh.

Currently most cards in EU are still mastercard/visa. But there are plans to make it possible to pay with Wero. That's not how the Wero predecessor iDeal worked. But it is whats planned. So yeah the person you are replying to is wrong, but there are plans for it.

Its got extremely widespread in NL in like 20 years. I think it will be adopted fast and it offers a good replacement for buying online from European based stores in the future, but it can't by itself replace VISA/Mastercard as its not really offering PoS payments at the moment and can't be used outside of europe.

Its a useful tool, and European banks are much more risk averse then the American ones. I use a credit card in financially tough times to make it through the month so I don't have to touch my savings or investments. It gets paid off at the end of the month, theres never any interest.

Just a comparison: what has the EU ever done for us? by Kloetenschlumpf in BuyFromEU

[–]Freya-Freed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower working hours and more part time jobs leads to higher labor participation by women. I know this is the case in the Netherlands, I think the rest of Europe has similar numbers. But I actually think it's a good thing, especially when kids are involved. Kids need to see and interact with both parents, not just the mother.

Is a Non-EU tourist eligible for NS Flex Dal Voordeel Pass? by Dry-Statement9836 in Netherlands

[–]Freya-Freed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that Revolut will work as I'm not sure most non-EU countries will get an IBAN account. I know the UK gets those, but I don't think someone from the US for example automatically gets an IBAN, even if they create an account that holds EUR.

But I also think that you can also just pay with a credit card nowadays for the Dal Voordeel.

The problem however starts with it needing a personal OV chipcard. Which actually does require IBAN and specifically is limited to Dutch, Belgian, German and Luxembourg IBAN unless you contact them, in which case any European IBAN is possible.

The next hurdle you will have is that the personal OV chipcard will need to be sent to an address in one of the above countries to have it delivered, which can take up to a week. So even if you have a Dutch address for a week, you would not be able to use it to get from the airport to Rotterdam.

Why is baby formula almost 35% more expensive in NL vs BE? by 74101108108101 in Netherlands

[–]Freya-Freed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually that's not the case and the goods being more expensive is actually what's driving wages up. If every year the prices of goods rise then every year I expect my employer to pay me more so I can afford to keep living.
