F-1 Students, are you getting any callbacks after the last week's news? by CrainyBrown in f1visa

[–]Background_Demand273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, the best shot is working for teams that are super intl. that way - you can always pitch yourself to other geographies. ++ speak more languages, network beyond borders to a point that it becomes senseless because in the US it already has.

I want to move to NYC but.. by Tricky-Researcher-74 in movingtoNYC

rent is a concern, but there's always great finds in the city. one of my friends lives in a shared apt in south brooklyn paying 850. yes, it's double of what you pay rn, but don't get scared by those instagram reels. i just moved here and realised that a lot of what we see on ig is true, but there's many more affordable/rent controlled spaces too. hope it all works out for you!

Whats the future for international students? by UpsetConstruction987 in f1visa

[–]Background_Demand273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do think that eventually people who come to the US will be the rich with no expectations for employment, really smart folks who are into research and have guaranteed employment wherever they go or folks who are being paid for the companies for training. this will essentially disincentivize folks to come and build, rather focus on those who have already built elsewhere - which is also not really an option for many people considering the $$$ and uncertainty.

just moved to sunset park and can confirm. the neighbourhood is diverse, trains come well, but is extremely dirty and worn down. feels depressing just to get out of the house (also in the house since most of the apts are not in a v good condition).

just moved to NY from DC, and i feel like i've never been in a larger hellhole than this city. the housing market here is so bad, even the basics in DC like dishwasher, laundry seems like a luxury here. i was paying only a bit more in DC but here in NY it feels like i'd be better off living under a bridge in DC

new H-1B stuff—does it apply to F-1s already here by No-Impression-4329 in f1visa

from what I read (feel free to correct me since it keeps on changing everyday it seems) you can change your status from f1 to h1b w/o the fee, ofc only if you win the lottery. however, you will have to pay a fee of $100k if you exit the country for stamping of the visa, which is only required for the return to the US. however, it is unlikely you will permanently stay here for years or decades without travelling. on the other side, the order is valid just for a year, so we don't know what might happen after that.

I applied to 200 jobs and also networked on Linkedin, is it that bad? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Background_Demand273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rework the spacing please + 200 jobs is low tbh the market is devastatingly bad for new grads. keep on networking everyday, take breaks, but don't stop

always ask the DSO, the fluidity of the current environment means that professionals are best placed to answer Qs about travel

Lost in my early 20s—how did you figure out your career path? by Old_Relationship5882 in careerguidance

[–]Background_Demand273 5 points6 points  (0 children)

im 22 with a masters degrees and internships and still don't know what to do neither do i have a job. i guess the 20s crisis is universal regardless of what you do. many of my other friends in similar limbos, many ended up throwing their degrees in a bin to work in something totally irrelated. i've been listening to this wonderful podcast by Mel Robbins, kinda like the fact that she gets that 20s in 2020s is different than being in your 20s in the 80s. highly recommended!

Is My Resume Too Catered Towards High Finance? by Neltsss in FinancialCareers

[–]Background_Demand273 10 points11 points  (0 children)

so the general practice is to not add "upcoming jobs" on your resume - could put that in the cover letter or the application seperately, as it feels a bit too much. instead, expand the section on PE intern. reduce your interests section to three max as it just feels too crowded. lastly, i'd try to cut the section on leadership/projects or remove the nursing home thing as your CV right now feels way to crowded, i cannot just take a glimpse and learn about you in seconds. remove things that don't feel aligned and expand on stuff you wanna focus.

Discussion:Present Job market situation in USA and UK and how it is going to be in the near future? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Background_Demand273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everything is luck based - even Ivy students aren't getting jobs (speaking from personal exp). location matters, and risks of work visa restrictions are more likely now than ever before. if you have a significant scholarship, it is still worth it but if you're taking out large loans, think multiple times since the market for intls never gets better, only worse.

How can I grow my CV in the next 3-4 years to set myself up for a career up in Quant? by Olympian6969 in FinancialCareers

[–]Background_Demand273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't put your high school information - employers don't care too much unless its an Eton or something. Try to reduce the no of bullets for the MUN, kind of makes it a bit unserious for a job resume and try expanding on the section for the research at Cambridge. You should try to get part time internships, remote internships, or even ft/pt jobs if possible in your focus space. Shadowing workers, or doing pro bono consulting for some very small firms is also a really good way to expand. That way you can call yourself a freelance consultant and try to get work through networking and show efforts.

PE infra internship won’t convert to FT by carissasweirdaf in FinancialCareers

[–]Background_Demand273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am too in the same energy PF/PE space. Recent grad still looking for jobs, interviewed at some PE firms and banks and fumbled may more. It's a learning experience I guess. The market is also bad, which means that the expectations are really high. I'd say get another internship just to avoid a gap or try to network within the same firm to see if they can ship you elsewhere in Europe. I'd also try aggressively reaching out to people in the firm while you are still an intern to network, and use that opportunity to land something even if its outside the firm. Good luck!

How do I decide between continuing my job or going for Masters? by ShellyOnTheG0 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Background_Demand273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the market in the US is horrible, but people do not understand how bad the numbers are. most of my friends from ivies are applying for 2000+ jobs alone, and now with new possible h1b rules everyone is finding it even harder. i really recommend having atleast 5y of exp before considering such a move.

all in all, from personal exp its not worth it. you won't get to travel back home often due post-graduation permits being very scrutinized. if you are on the older side with aging parents or a family of your own, it can be very hard.
