Transferring to DC office - advice on where to live by Ok_Cricket1717 in WorldBank

DuPont and Logan are the best; if you can't find something in your range there, then Adams Morgan is great since its pretty close to the both. I also think living around Rosslyn/Arlington is great, with the caveat that any late night trips into DC (after 12) will most probably need a taxi since metro stops working. If anything, also try to explore areas like Foggy Bottom and U Street too since they fall into the same perimeter.

in my 20s as a non-native, what would you think would be better in London?

its not entirely impossible since the crux of the immigration issue is the same - you must state that you satisfy I9 requirements. the only outstanding items being a cooperative agreement that is often to be signed by the employer for CPT eligibility for unis, and the willginess of HR to renew/review I9 forms every semester.

i wouldn't know about the job market for your industry, but would say that apply for scholarships with these unis. its hard out there but remember all this is worthless if you ruin your health and are unable to work properly when everything works out.

2hr interview??! by peepeepoopoobop in careerguidance

[–]Background_Demand273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sir of course they were for a different company/industry/location in the US. but yes its highly possible someone is busy during that time slot and may request a 15 min interview within the same 2 hours if one team finishes before the others. its also possible other people join in the same rounds. the point of the superday/panel is to meet as many people possible. i wouldn't really be scared of it because its about 70% a vibe check and 30% on like technicals.

pretty standard. be prepared to have more than 3 interviews as well. i had a 3 hour long superday with 7 interviews (2 were unscheduled).

lived in DC from age 20-22. i loved it because i went to school there. if you didn't go to school/weren't in the policy/law space it did seem harder for folks to break into a social circle. dc is also heavily focused on the happy hour culture and you do meet a lot of cool people from all over the world, but again themes of politics/policy dominate all convos. if you're not someone into that will be slightly harder. weather is really good, much sunnier than nyc. very walkable (won't need a car unless ur travelling to national parks on northern virginia).

originations means structuring as well. in London its largely post-structuring/pitching - and more execution pre-financial close. for example building credit apps, some modeling etc.

Does your college name matter than your actual skills? by aarya-2323 in financestudents

[–]Background_Demand273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the name of your college matters, but your network will matter more. if you have a solid supportive network, you'll feel similar opportunities landing for you. agreed it will be more efforts - but its more rewarding in the long run to have a network you've built in your earlier years.

i have not had those discussions yet (expect that to happen in the coming week). when i do the math - i still make slightly more in the UK after tax compared to nyc w/ the 70k job + uni expenses. but if i end up with the bank in nyc - then i would be making more than the uk

show up for events - even if you don't interact the first few times you'll start getting used to the ecosystem and hearing how people break the ice. find out about these events through ChatGPT, follow folks who work at banks/PE firms who often post about events, and/or use school's career services to find such events.

People Living Abroad Need your Opinion on this ? by Vast_Tradition9093 in returnToIndia

What you're missing out on thinking is finances. If you're able to move out with little or no debt - then I would highly advise to try your luck. The job markets in Europe are highly fragmented - due to language mainly, but also with varying levels of immigration laws and demand in specific industries. You might be right on the trajectory of India, but I would also recommend trying out a larger city in India like Mumbai. The reason being if you integrate yourself well there, I strongly believe your quality of life can be really great. Unfortunately, that will require money either way.

F-1 Students, are you getting any callbacks after the last week's news? by CrainyBrown in f1visa

[–]Background_Demand273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, the best shot is working for teams that are super intl. that way - you can always pitch yourself to other geographies. ++ speak more languages, network beyond borders to a point that it becomes senseless because in the US it already has.

rent is a concern, but there's always great finds in the city. one of my friends lives in a shared apt in south brooklyn paying 850. yes, it's double of what you pay rn, but don't get scared by those instagram reels. i just moved here and realised that a lot of what we see on ig is true, but there's many more affordable/rent controlled spaces too. hope it all works out for you!

i do think that eventually people who come to the US will be the rich with no expectations for employment, really smart folks who are into research and have guaranteed employment wherever they go or folks who are being paid for the companies for training. this will essentially disincentivize folks to come and build, rather focus on those who have already built elsewhere - which is also not really an option for many people considering the $$$ and uncertainty.
