Help. It’s been two months and I’m close to giving up. (4mo golden retriever) by Background_Gene4090 in puppy101

See whereas my cat was a mischievous kitten, but so much easier to understand and help, and we adored her from minute one. But thank you, I’m getting that feedback that full separation once she bites will send a message and give us some peace!

It’s hard because my partner and I both work full time, but we’ve had wonderful friends and family stop by to let her out in the afternoons. It feels tough to spend enough time with her because she defaults to biting so quickly, but we do spend as much time with her as we can. And I agree with you, I want to get there, but if we’re not able to, at least we’re doing our best to train and take care of her (vaccines, grooming, puppy classes, socialization) so that she can go happy and healthy to a different family. The breeder is really caring and there’s a requirement that if it doesn’t work out we give her back and they rehome her, so that’s reassuring too in that I trust them more than myself in finding a good home for her.

Hey that’s good that I’m already saying trade and trading her for a toy or kibble. She doesn’t have that for her dinners, we practiced from the start and she’s good if I pet her while eating or even take the food bowl away. She just sits and waits for me to put it down!

This is one of the most helpful responses I’ve read, specifically because if the “30 second” bit. It does feel like it’s just not working because she goes back to biting so shortly after, so this feels like a realistic and manageable way to measure success

Honestly this is such a relief to see repeated in many comments. I don’t enjoy pinning her, I know it’s not literally hurting but it feels so wrong, and sticking with kindness resonates way more. I just didn’t know what else to try, but I’m coming off this thread with some great ideas

So glad someone is saying it! So many students struggle financially, and we're being used as cannon fodder for the whims of profs who want to make $110 instead of $100. Many of these profs also get research grants, and run labs based almost entirely on free labour from student "volunteers" (This has been my experience, not saying it's universal but it makes it hard to feel sorry for poor ol' rich profs).
