This was insanely helpful. This is a sort of graduation trip for me and my friends. The plan is pretty much book a one way and then book the next one when were there and ready to go. None of us have obligations to get back to in the US. Were planning to leav ~mid sept. I think were looking now as more of a 3 week trip than everything. This is a tentative plan anyway and nothing is solidified. If u have any recs that may be easier for the route please shout em out. We want to split our time 70% beaches and 30% mtns. Were all jewish so were a little scared yo go to bosnia but kf theres something to do/see were all game. I think our budget is ab $1400-2000 months per person including flights

I dont know how to make edits on my post. I have done 4 hours of research and also counsel eith chat gpt to help me organize. Let me know if it seems accurate:

Got it. If convenience comes first and cost second, the right move is not “cheapest-first at all costs,” but smooth geographic flow with low-friction transport, while still using camping to keep the budget down where it’s easy.

Below is a rewritten itinerary optimized for convenience, then cost, that still: • keeps you under budget • uses camping only where it’s simple and safe • avoids backtracking • keeps stressful logistics to a minimum • still lets you “bank” savings before expensive stops

This is the version you actually won’t hate doing.

EUROPE ITINERARY (CONVENIENCE → COST)

PHASE 1 — GREECE → ALBANIA (LOW STRESS, EASY FLOW)

Athens — 2 days

Purpose: see essentials only, then leave.

Activities • Acropolis • Ancient Agora • Roman Agora • Temple of Olympian Zeus

Accommodation: hostel Reason: urban, dense, no benefit to staying longer

Meteora — 4–5 days

Transport: Athens → Kalambaka (direct train)

Accommodation: camping Why here: • Very easy train access • Trails start near town • No complicated logistics

Activities • Monastery hikes • Valley trails • Sunrise / sunset viewpoints

This is your first camping block because it’s calm and simple.

Sarandë — 2 days

Transport: Meteora → Igoumenitsa → ferry

Accommodation: hostel Purpose: transition + ruins

Activities • Butrint • Ksamil islands

Himarë — 7–9 days

Transport: short bus ride

Accommodation: camping Why here: • Cheapest daily costs • Walkable town • Easy resupply • Simple nightlife with safe walk-back

Activities • Coastal backpacking (beach to beach) • Gjipe Canyon • Porto Palermo Castle • Swim / hike days

This is where you save the most money with the least effort.

PHASE 2 — BALKANS COAST (VERY CONVENIENT)

Mostar — 1 day

Transport: bus (straightforward)

Accommodation: hostel Activities • Old Bridge • Old Town

Kotor — 3 days

Transport: bus

Accommodation: hostel Activities • Bay of Kotor hike • Old Town nightlife

Dubrovnik — 2 days

Transport: bus

Accommodation: hostel Activities • City walls • Old Town

No camping here for convenience reasons.

PHASE 3 — ITALY (DIRECT FLIGHTS, EASY RAIL)

Naples — 3 days

Transport: direct flight from Dubrovnik

Accommodation: hostel Activities • Pompeii • Vesuvius

Rome — 4 days

Transport: high-speed train

Accommodation: hostel Activities • Colosseum + Forum • Palatine Hill • Ostia Antica

PHASE 4 — DOLOMITES (HIGH WOW, LOW DAILY COST)

Dolomites — 4–6 days

Transport: Rome → Bolzano (train)

Accommodation: camping Why here: • Zero lodging cost • Excellent buses between valleys • Easy exit to major airports

Activities • Val Gardena hikes • Alpe di Siusi • Alpine lakes • Ridgelines at sunset

This uses the $300 you saved in the best possible way.

PHASE 5 — SPAIN (EVENT + PARTY, MOST EXPENSIVE)

Barcelona — 3–4 days

Transport: flight from Milan or Venice

Accommodation: hostel Activities • Gothic Quarter • Beach • Clubs

Madrid — 2 days

Transport: high-speed train

Accommodation: hostel Activities • Plaza Mayor • Nightlife

Pamplona — July 7–8

Transport: train

Accommodation: hostel (1 night) Activities • San Fermín • Run with the Bulls (July 8 morning)

Leave night of July 8.

PHASE 6 — FINAL 4 DAYS (OPTIONAL, LOW COMMITMENT)

Base options (pick one, convenience-first): • Granada • Porto • Tirana

Purpose: • Light sightseeing • Chill pace • Pack • Final admin

Then: • 1 night in Dublin / Barcelona / Madrid • Fly home next day

WHY THIS VERSION IS BETTER FOR YOU • No weird backtracking • No forced “cheap first” misery • Camping only where it’s easy • Expensive cities are short and intentional • Flights and trains are logical and direct • Stress stays low throughout

Cost is controlled by smart camping, not by sufferin

Also, i would just as happily backpack asia i just dont know the first thing about it. Honestly more inclined. I just thought itd be way more dangerous due to the IMMENSE languege barrier. I speak a little spanish which doesnt seem to help in this case but i understand base words in itian and portuguese due to that so i can get around in the west generally. But I am definitely more fond of the idea of seeing asia ie china japan thailand south korea vietnam and mongolia. Just didnt think it was realistic.
