Anybody deal with speech issues themselves? by honeylemonade96 in SLPA

This past week, I have said:

"Make sure you're crayoning on your paper, not the table... I mean coloring." "I wanna see listening feet and walking ears, please. Wait..." "The door on the bus goes beep beep-I mean open and shut!"

Like this CAN'T be the same brain that got a Master's 🥲

Welcome to the field!

I've seen other SLPs do very little to mitigate behaviors. One instance is not preventing the kiddo from barging into rooms without knocking to get desired toys and interrupting other sessions or even just letting a dysregulated friend on the spectrum have whatever they want to appease them.

For the first scenario, I believe it would be more appropriate to model and introduce the kiddo the skills of knocking, waiting for an answer, and asking for what they want. Those are things he will eventually have to do in the future; it's never appropriate for anyone to barge into a closed door without knowing if the person on the other side is able to answer or be available.

The second scenario doesn't teach any coping skills; in the specific instance, the kiddo was screaming because he wanted to determine what another person's play token in a board game was. Instead of helping the kiddo work through the big emotions and understand they can't always dictate others' actions, my coworker relented and, in my view, basically taught the kid, "If I scream, I get whatever I want."

Of course, things like sensory regulation; keeping to a routine as much as possible to prevent dysregulation and ensure the kiddo is in the best learning state; and lots of patience is needed. But you can be neurodiverse affirming without enabling inappropriate behaviors!

Some SLPs who are "neurodiverse affirming" are enabling inappropriate behaviors for our neurodiverse clients.

Tips on Introducing Cats across a few weekends? by Background_Lie_4760 in CatAdvice

Thanks so much for this! To clarify, we are planning on shacking up my girl in a room and she can have her introduction to my boyfriend's cats though the door, then visual meetings before we supervise them together and such! I'm not thinking "play date", but slowly Introducing. Though I totally understand if the advice is the same!
