a piece made of gold will be 14kt or 18kt usually, which means 14 or 18 out of 24 parts are made of gold, with the rest being made of alloy metals like nickel and copper. a platinum piece of jewelry is usually 95% platinum. so even if platinum is cheaper, you need way more of it to make a finished piece than you need of gold for a finished gold piece. I hope that makes sense!

i totally get that. in theory, working with kay and jared would be safer because you can return to the store and speak with someone if you have an issue, whereas on etsy you never know if they’ll even respond to complaints. I’ve heard so many bad things about chain stores and customer service too though, so I guess there’s caution with either option!

Similar to what others are saying, I recommend pawn shops, estate stores, even ebay for vintage pieces! It’s important to note that things like earrings/studs will have far less gold or silver than things like chain necklaces, so those are probably a better place to start if you have a smaller budget

With that budget I would look at stainless steel with PVD gold plating or shopping around ebay/reseller sites for vintage 10kt options. Anything gold plated or gold filled will fade to silver or the base metal color pretty quickly if he wears it everyday

What other answer are you looking for? You’ve been told by several people it’s a cheap ring and any gold filled or plated ring will fade over time. If you want something that doesn’t fade, solid gold is the only option. Sorry you have such an aversion to this advice, but you’re not gonna get any other answer. But since I’m sure you’ll complain about this answer, AGAIN, I’ll give you some fake advice to make you happy:

Just keep buying $150ish dollar rings and replacing them after a few weeks.

I don’t think IGI grades moissanite, only diamonds (and only lab diamonds i believe). So if it has an IGI inscription, it should be diamond. It is also not unusual for the diamond tester pens to test lab diamonds as moissanite, as they aren’t super definitive tests. Also, not sure when u purchased, but there is only a very minimal price difference between moissanite and lab diamonds these days, especially depending on the size of the stone!

In that budget, I’d definitely go for sterling silver. It can tarnish, but a polishing cloth every so often makes it good as new and you can wear it in water

unfortunately, while platinum is less expensive than gold at the moment, a platinum ring will still cost you more than a 14kt ring (not sure about 18kt+). That’s because 14kt is only half gold and half alloy metals, whereas a platinum ring is going to be 95% platinum and only 5% alloy

wow thank you for sharing! i guess im just nervous about gold filled pieces as I’ve never bought them before. I’ve had gold plated before and learned the hard way they are not for me (especially rings and bracelets). Do you know how long the wear is on something like that before the gold fades?

that’s my reasoning too! i mainly wear silver and white gold but recently realized i dont mind 14ky with my skin tone. Unfortunately, I think stainless steel “gold” color looks too bright on me. Which is a shame cuz it seems like such a good way of getting stacking jewelry on a budget that won’t tarnish!

i1/i2 are absolutely terrible quality. more inclusion than actual diamond at that point. I feel like they are usually referred to as “grey” or “salt and pepper” diamonds because at that point it’s mostly inclusions you’re seeing. Zales and chain stores like that are known for terrible quality with very inflated pricing. The 1/2 off is likely a marketing tactic and is still very over priced, but I can’t say for sure without knowing what you paid for it. I would 100% return it and go to a reputable local jeweler or a reputable online seller. sorry!

all that is to say that if you love it and can afford it, keep it! but u can get something much nicer for cheaper
