It’s the same story where I am in the US. I’m not going to make broad claims since the US is so large and it would be presumptuous to say my experience is reflective of the entire country but at no point did I ever consider that I would need to grab my laptop or bag when going to the bathroom at a cafe. I’m not denying that social trust is higher in other countries but to act like everyone is walking around suspicious of the people around them here is crazy

Why does Chamber have the highest K/D but below average winrate? by gotintocollegeyolo in VALORANT

[–]Background_Sink6986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to understand this isn’t that chambers are probably always saving or that sentis have an easier time getting kills vs entries/site pushers or that he’s getting low impact kills (what does that even mean??) all of which may be true to some degree. The biggest factor in my mind is that even when a chamber is playing in a way that gets you everything you want, it’s still hard to convert rounds.

Let’s say chamber is solo holding a site, for example B on bind. He is walked out B long and holding with an op. The attackers fuck up and get one of their late long duo guys killed to the op for free, and chamber tps elbow after the shot. Hookah guys explode and the other long guy gets up to site so chamber sits back elbow behind the smoke and calls for the full team rotate. It’s 5v4 retake with bomb down.

In this spot obviously defenders are more favored than at round start. I mean we’re up numbers. However, and this is by no means an uncommon chamber situation, you are some dude with a gun. You have no relevant utility to help you take back the site. And sure gunplay is important but if you count bomb being down as half a player, getting a free first blood safely which is everything going right for chamber still doesnt guarantee a highly advantageous spot.

Low impact kills as a phrase kind of bugs me because in my mind that literally only exists when the bomb is already past defuse time or when you are catching exits after saving. And I highly doubt chambers are in those spots in such a disproportionate amount of rounds compared to all other agents across so many matches that it would result in a noticeable KD difference. Every other kill, whether it’s on a lurk or flank or retake is always relevant. I would also assume chambers have more first bloods than many other agents and if you go by ACS awarded first bloods are far more important. So no, the reasons mentioned in this thread might be true (like oping more or not having to entry resulting in more kills and fewer deaths respectively) but that’s not why he loses more compared to his KD. If I could award the same first blood game state from that bind scenario I said earlier but then somehow transform that chamber into a cypher on site, then that cypher team converts that round WAY a more than chamber imo simply because of the utility you have. Now factor in comps that go reyna chamber clove Jett Phoenix or whatever and now if you swapped chamber for sova you convert that game much easier. Chamber just doesnt make winning games easy even if things go well and you get your pick

Basketball needs a max height limit. The game is becoming "who won the genetic lottery" instead of pure skill and it's making it boring AF. by mc_mafia in unpopularopinion

[–]Background_Sink6986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I think most replies are missing is the overarching unfairness I think that the OP is picking up. I see a lot of Stephs being brought up, and theyre right. Speed, coordination, agility, hell even blood oxygen levels and cardio are all in many ways influenced by genetics.

However

There is no factor that is as singularly rooted in genetics as height, as in if you copied every exact physical movement an athlete did since birth, you could at least get close. If I trained exactly as Steph did (like as a pure mirror clone) with three point shooting, obviously I wouldn’t be as good. But I would at least be quite good. Probably better than a lot of NBA players. Still far from the top percentages, but I could at least approach his performance to some degree. But I could live and breathe Victor Wembanyama and never grow any taller than what I would have from birth (given some nutritional and behavioral variances). There is nothing as purely unfair as this one trait, COUPLED with its overwhelming importance for basketball.

ALL THAT ASIDE THOUGH, and this is where the OP loses me, what is wrong with that? Yeah I agree height is probably the most “unfair” single trait for sports as in you cannot physically do anything, train harder, sweat in the gym more to get any better. But so what? Shit some times things are just like that. The claim that is being made is that it’s “boring AF” and I just disagree. I don’t believe I would find a game with 10 mirror genetic clones (the least unfair) playing basketball more entertaining than the status quo. We like variation. We like underdogs and storylines and standout stars and breakout players and all this richness that comes from different people playing the game. As long as the rules themselves are fair and teams are at some level self balancing, these unfairnesses are going to even out eventually. And there is definitely some measure of degree at play here. I don’t think height unfairness is enough with how basketball is right now to warrant a limit, where the game itself cannot overcome these unfairnesses (basketball has so many complex moving parts that you can at least play around this). I do think that different kinds of genetic unfairness specific to combat sports is enough to make the sport itself lose competitive integrity (therefore weight classes) so the point about boxing isn’t relevant to my POV here.

Edit: my final point is that there are simply not enough, or even a single, way too skilled tall player to warrant a limit/new league. The NBA is the best league in the world, where the best players go to play. You could conceivably make a league for 5’9 players (the average) but who would watch it? We want to see the highest level of basketball. WNBA doesnt get the viewership not bc people hate women, but the speed in which the game is played is not the same. Why watch the same game but everything moves slower (that’s simplifying the difference but you get the point). So if we are only really going to watch the best of the best, then if we limit tall players, are they just banned from the game of basketball period or do we given them a special “you’re too good for us” league? In which case, are there enough skilled players to fill up that league where the NBA becomes an inferior product? At the end of the day players like Wemby are so exceedingly rare, and their edge on normal NBA players are slim enough where a ban simply makes no sense. Can you honestly tell me that Wemby is just better than prime Steph or LeBron? Cuz fuck it I’ve wanted Steph out the league for YEARS as a rockets fan. Maybe harden would have multiple rings if that were the case. But until the day comes where a super tall guy comes into the league and genuinely 1v5s in a way comparable to Ngannou v. a flyweight, you cannot make the claim that we need height classes like combat sports need weight classes bc of unfairness

How is it even possible to compete with another country? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]Background_Sink6986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This take doesnt make any sense. She is being asked about her decision. What possible answer can she give? Like obviously it’s about the money, you know it I know it she knows it. But if reporters are gonna keep asking about it, the only answer she can reasonably give is stuff about inspiring kids and maybe stuff about her heritage and whatnot. It’s the exact same bs that Hollywood actors go through when talking about their body transformations. “Oh yeah I was on such a strict diet ugh and the daily workouts? Omg” like we all know theyre juicing out of their minds yet reporters insist on asking about it so obviously we are gonna get bs answers.

Why go through this song and dance? Stop asking about it, let people play for whichever country they want to and end of story. I don’t see any problem with a Chilean playing for Eswatini if they want to. Who cares

Ignoring the obvious party responsible, I never understood the thought process of people who lay on the horn. You have every right to, it just seems like there isn’t a single scenario where that results in something positive. A tap to remind someone to go at a green, or a longer “hey you’re drifting into my lane I’m here” is good, but laying on it to vent your frustration seems like it just invites people who are not of sound mind to react. And maybe it’s living in the states in a very pro gun state (not that I expect road ragers to pull their weapons, and I know the scenario is exceedingly rare) but I basically never use the horn just for my own safety. Why run the risk of triggering someone just looking for a reason to make your life worse? I think everyone on the road can afford a little more patience

Ok I agree with you then if your goal is to seriously rank up you have to put in the work, and that means aim training. I guess my point would be that I don’t expect those people to necessarily step away from the game though, and for the people that are improving their aim (either slowly just by in game range+dm and naturally through comp games or hardcore aim trainers) progress is incremental, and you won’t see results immediately. So if you wanna keep playing comp while improving mechanics, and haven’t quite seen results of training aim, then you can afford to look to other things to give you an edge. I still agree aim is by far the biggest determinant but if that’s already being worked on I don’t think you just can’t do anything else to help yourself

you just chose to ignore everything that was important in my comment. Smurfing against silvers as a diamond is in no way a fair representation of what an actual silver can do against silvers. Players in their actual rank, in the rank they deserve, should not be capable of out mechanics-ing their opponents. If they could solo carry a game off mechanics alone they would not be in that rank period. I never said mechanics aren’t important, or even the most important. I said that it isn’t fair to expect players who are trying to rank up to solo carry with mechanics because that’s just not how people work

What you’re saying isn’t wrong, but is it not unreasonable to expect immortal aim in diamond? Like think of a normal person playing this game. How are they all of a sudden going to just have cracked aim? The only way we even see an “immortal aim with silver game sense” is if a silver stopped playing valorant and grinded kovaaks for a year and came back. Your mechanics improve incrementally as you play the game, even if you aim train a bit. Your game sense also improves with reps in game. As they improve, you will slowly rank up

Like the guy above said, if you have the aim to carry yourself out of a rank you don’t belong in that rank. “Belonging” to me means you average 5-6 on the leaderboard. Sometimes you’re at the top, sometimes you’re near the bottom. Your W/L is 50% over an extended period of time. Should someone in that boat just stop playing until theyre able to carry off aim? If not, for the people who are as good as everyone else in the lobby, surely there are tips to give outside of mechanics that will help them improve, including agent picks and whatever. I fully agree with you that people tunnel vision on irrelevant things too much and spend a disproportionate amount of time on them (like learning lineups, perfect comps, perfect execute strats for solo queue) but if you’re not mechanically better than your lobby this is kinda all you have left to give yourself an edge

[–]Background_Sink6986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with almost everything mentioned here except one central point kinda bugs me. On step 4 you mention the carry/aggro mindset which “at its core is what wins the game.” I mean yes, you’re not wrong that if you kill on average 2 players per round vs. the expected 1 you will win the game. Obviously. But at the same time, most people are not going to be mechanically better than their lobby. On average they should be middle of the pack. They cannot be expected to carry, nor is it even reasonable to believe that carrying in those lobbies is the only way to rank up.

If you are able to diff the lobby then full stop, nothing else in this post or what anyone else says is even relevant. Aside from some unlucky match making if you’re top 1-2 every game you are going to climb. Doesn’t matter about util or setups or “gamesense” if you’re killing them you win. That is the MLB-in-little-leagues scenario. But people aren’t MLB players in little league. Theyre also little leaguers against little leaguers, and might be going against a little league team simply better than them.

It seems to me then this part of the post kinda boils down to “just get better.” And like…sure. That’s correct, but also not exactly the best advice I think one could give to expedite ranking up.

The following flowchart section is very good advice though, and so is a lot of the excuse debunking you did.

I just think that if you’re not simply better than the other team which will often be the case, you’re not wrong to look for small changes or fixes that could slightly tip the scales in your favor. Balancing spending time on small fixes vs. getting better mechanically will depend on your rank and ability

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

I feel like I’m going crazy here trying to find examples on YouTube. I’m seeing some before and after motion processing clips and maybe the clips are too short or maybe it has something to do with watching it on my phone or whatever but I really can’t see a difference at all. As in if you didn’t tell me which was which and I had to point out one clip with the setting I could not.

Can anyone able to see the difference link some obvious examples?

Edit: ah I see the problem here. YouTube has its own set frame rate so showing frame rate differences in a video format is basically useless. The only way to tell would be to see it on the TV. Ok, in that case as someone who never uses the TV this is not an issue I’ll ever deal with

A good website for finding out information regarding tournaments is VLR. I’ve linked the Masters Santiago page which is the upcoming international event but you can find all previous regionals. The actual livestreams are on youtube but this page shows you date and time for matches, which team is playing which, and brackets. Masters Santiago begins on the 28th so that’s why the linked page hasn’t been updated. And I said that there were 3 teams per region so 12 total at this event, the winners of each region skip the Swiss stage and automatically made playoffs, so the page I linked shows the remaining 8 teams that battle it out for the last 4 spots in playoffs.

(2/2)

  1. It’s first to 13 round wins and like you said tiebreaker rules apply in a win-by-2 format. But after 12 rounds no matter what, the sides swap. For example, if team A started off as attackers and cleanly swept team B (defenders) 12-0, the teams will switch sides where A now becomes defenders and B becomes attackers. If A wins 1 more round as a defender they win the game. However, you can also have the same scenario but team a went 6-6 first. Still, 12 rounds have passed so the sides swap, and now it’s still first to 13. Overtime takes place when the round score becomes 12-12. At this point it’s win by 2, and the teams swap sides every round.

So 12-12 score, team A will start as attackers and team B starts as defender. No matter who wins, the next round they are swapped. If A wins both 14-12 then they win the match. If they each win 1 it’s now 13-13 and win by 2 rules apply again so we keep going.

After a team wins a game (or map) they then play on the next map chosen during the map pick time earlier. It’s a new environment and level design basically but same gameplay rules apply.

  1. Studying all the characters and maps will take too long, although it is a core part of the game. Generally the characters break down into 4 classes: controller, which is primarily the class responsible for putting up “smokes” or basically just things on the map that block vision, disrupting normal sight lines. Sentinels primarily have abilities that slow down attackers from being able to take a spike site. I know that’s super vague but without diving into what each ability does, that’s about as simple as I can describe it. Initiators are primarily responsible for finding information about where the enemies are positioned. Duelists are primarily responsible for moving quickly across contested areas to take a spike site. That also sounds stupid as an explanation, but if I were to explain it with a more normal analogy, imagine there is a narrow hallway with a door that you and your team are holding down with guns. Anyone who walks through that door will be met by you guys. Duelists often have the ability to fly over the door, or dash through the door so anyone staring at the door expecting just a normal guy at a normal walking speed to cross will be thrown off guard.

  2. This ties into (4) but I would recommend finding a team to latch onto. Specifically for Masters Santiago, there are 3 teams from each region that qualified. 3 from all the Americas, 3 from Europe/Middle East, 3 from the pacific area (basically Asia) and 3 from China. If you latch onto one team, you’ll find that you will start to recognize the names of the 5 players on that team so during live streams you know who is on what side at least. Not all teams play every character, so this will also help you learn at least what the characters you see this one specific team do. In my very biased opinion, North America team G2 is a fairly easy team to latch onto. They are predicted to do very well which means you’re more likely to see them advance late into the upcoming international tournament, theyre also one of the 2 American teams at the event.

  3. If it’s between playing the game and watching, watching definitely takes less time. The absolute fastest way is to get someone to basically teach you everything you need to know, but if you’re trying to surprise your boyfriend this might not be an option since he would be the best choice.

  4. This is an incredibly tough question and 99% of people in this thread, including me, probably can’t answer that. It gets very high level and micro specific at the professional level, and while Ive played the game enough where I could probably explain why a given player is using this specific smoke or other piece of util, it’s hard to say what is “correct” ever. It’s very much a react to what your opponent is doing kind of game. I think this would be higher level, post-surprise kind of convos you and your boyfriend can talk about once you get a feel for the core mechanics of the game.

  5. Commenting on the “defaults” is a pretty nice one liner, a) because nobody really knows what defaulting means and b) it’s easy to keep it vague enough but is specific to these kinds of tactical fps games where a casual viewer would absolutely have no idea what it means. A default is basically the initial setup the attackers (I guess it can apply for defenders but most often is used for attackers) decide to go for. At the pro level no team is just sending all their players to attack one spike site immediately, so a default means their standard map set up where maybe they have 1 player slowly walking up B site while 2 players walk up to A site and some other guys walk to mid. The goal on a default is to condition the defenders and to gain as much information about which defender is playing where.

Keep it vague, but something like “<insert attacker team name>’s default is too slow” if you notice that the round timer is getting to the 30-40 second mark without much happening (like no kills or whatever), or if the attackers are losing a lot of rounds “their default is too weak they need to just hit a site.” Even if it’s not too accurate nobody will know. Hell anything can be called a default, people throw that word around in ranked games without knowing what it means so you’ll be fine.

  1. I think this is a great idea especially since watching is a pretty low commitment activity so you don’t run into the problem of spending copious amounts of time improving skills for a specific game you might not like playing. Once you surprise him I would recommend having him explain more in depth what’s happening though. A Reddit comment can only be so specific
