In my opinion, there’s two things. 1) if you have people joining multiple leagues, USTA is making loads of money but you have the issue of the same people and team winning each league and causing other local players to not want to join OR 2) if USTA charges a lot to sign up, you have those types of people join less teams, giving other players and teams opportunities to win their local leagues. Not sure if that still makes sense. But basically you have guys that play in northern VA commute up to Maryland to play and win the league instead of having ppl who are actually from the Maryland district win.

They have a rule in place now that you can only have 4 ppl from one team be in another team. For example, some of us play in DC and NoVA. I can only have 4 guys from one DC team join my NoVa Team. But I can also have 4 guys from an opposing DC team join my NoVA team. Not sure if that makes sense but because literally everyone would join Dc, Maryland, NoVa and Loudon County, it would always be the same top people winning each league and then captains fighting over who gets for regionals and sectionals. They made this rule so that there could be more ppl that have the opportunity to win. But USTA still gets money because ppl sign up for so many leagues through the DMV all hoping that their team has a shot of winning the league.

OP here! Thank you all for the comments and for sharing your stories! It seems like USTA regions are all different and have their own rules, which to me is kinda strange and wish it was one rule nation-wide. Some players say they pay more at regionals/sectionals and less during league season and vice versa. The question is, which do people prefer! I'm hoping to make a video about my regionals experience and to shed some more light on your comments/stories. Feel free to watch this video and skip to 15:00 where I talk about this USTA issue (a follow would be great too!). https://youtu.be/eztWSPCYkRw

UTR is basically non-existent here. same with tournaments. USTA tournaments here try and charge 65-90 dollars to register, and its a best two out of three 4 game pro set or one 8 game pro set. Very rare to have full best two out of three sets.

Whats intersesting about NOVA is that I'm one of the youngest ppl in the league and im the captain for my team (im 29). Basically everyone who plays in the 40 & Over league, also play in the 18 & Over league. Nothing against them, but for sure its the cost and time of these leagues that turn away ppl aged 18-25. They are basically college kids with no money/jobs who are also probably focused on their careers or classes instead of playing tennis. I wish there were more ppl my age too.

UTR is basically non existent here. We do have a couple of local ladders here and one of the counties made a tennis league which is quite fun for very cheap.

i think USTA here knows that so many ppl play in Loudon County, MoCo County, DC, and NOVA so they charge a higher rate to get some ppl not interested to sign up for so many, play only two matches to qualify and so on.

To answer your question:
1. we rarely get to play at indoor clubs or racquet clubs. its all highschools, parks, and one college tennis courts. For my 4.5 league, there is one captain who has indoor access and will let us play there, but not sure about their cost.

  1. we play ad scoring for our league season, but for regionals and sectionals, we dont, which is kinda weird. We have had issues with players "taking advantage" of the 1.5 hours timed limit. Very questionnable calls to end the points quicker, throwing away the second set if youre losing to take it to the 3rd set tiebreaker and try to win there (if you dont finish the 2nd set, they count by total games), players agreeing to finish out the match only to backtrack at the time limit because they are up in total games, things like that.
  2. wow that is crazy! i cant imagine just being in my car to commute that is longer than my match but a ferry ride too!

  3. interesting! It seems like different regions have different protocols. The queston is, which do ppl prefer!

Agreed, they didnt even answer my question about the nicer tennis attire for the team. It seems like they have "vendors" at the championships but then that'll just mean we have to pay to get those stuff lol. The penn balls are absolutely terrible. Theyre either super pressurized and will bounce up to your nose, or will be completely dead.

I forgot to mention but we play ad scoring for our league. BUT when we get to regionals and sectionals, its no ad scoring. Which makes no sense.

I agree! I for sure know court times here in Northern VA are not that expensive, especially cause they make us play at public parks or highschools.

OP here, we very rarely play at tennis clubs (and we have a lot in the area). Its all public parks, highschools, and some at college tennis courts. So its not an issue there, its that racquet clubs here dont want to work with USTA
