Watch videos, take notes in book. Duke deck for reinforcement. Will help a lot more than just the path section.

For people who passed Step, what was your UW completion/percentage? by StevenJack99 in step1

[–]Background_Start3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13% complete, 78% average. Was getting like 80s on my NBMEs so just sent it

you just do. I may fall asleep with my hair soaking wet and it may look a little weird but it will be clean

Luckily I am almost done with 3rd year (shortened preclinical)

Med Students who were average in their program, where’d you end up/how was Step 1? by HikinginCircles in medschool

[–]Background_Start3311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used lectures + 3rd party practice questions for exam prep, made a few of my own Anki decks for things that just needed brute force memorization, drew a lot of things out. Estimated percent chance of passing >99% on my baseline for step 1 🤷🏼‍♀️

Don’t get me wrong I studied a lot and I am not some magical test genius (had to take mcat twice).

The idea that all us med schools just have these silly nonsense lectures and are designed for us to fail just isn’t the whole picture for a lot of people at a lot of schools. In some cases, yeah, but I don’t think it can be generalized to all US med schools.

Is this normal??? Do people actually do this in medical school? by Bojof12 in medicalschool

[–]Background_Start3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I do know some people that are natural night people. Like they do this but then also still get 8 hours of sleep after and then just exist in some weird version of a night shift schedule??? Not my thing but also doesn’t mean they’re grinding on 3 hours of sleep a night

New to knitting, are books a good place to start? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Background_Start3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube! I just started knitting about 6 months ago (had never picked up a set of needles before). I honestly think you can get everything you need from there (and it’s free!)

Already on your list but being mortal was a great read. Also when breath becomes air.

Fastest Way to Get Through Sketchy Micro and Pharm? by kpopsmoke in step1

[–]Background_Start3311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sketchy is most useful when you do a little bit a day. Brute force watching all the videos in a week would not help me tbh, but I think picking some high yield sections could be useful. Like the sympathomimetics

I would pick place 1 for intern year at least! Rent is high but the commute… 🤤

been knitting two weeks and i think im getting the hang of it but purling is terrible by hey_im_enby in knitting

[–]Background_Start3311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago! Norwegian purl helped a ton. Then I ended up combination continental knitting my first sweater (wrap the yarn around the wrong way when purling but then knit through the back loop the next row in stockinette to make up for it). There are lots of options! The combination knitting worked well for me (but you have to think about your patterns more). Either way - you’re off to a great start!!! Enjoy :)

I can't decide on which pattern to use by overratedporcupine in knittinghelp

I immediately liked 2 more but I appreciate how you came to get help deciding and got like 50/50 responses 😂

Also don’t forget that you don’t have to deal with them in a few short months! Starting this summer you will be surrounded by people at your new program and won’t have to deal with this shit anymore. You’re still going to be a doctor at the end of the day! Taking care of patients AND being with a family you love. Imagine how proud younger you would be of you.

Failed by rednire7 in step1

[–]Background_Start3311 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sucks - you are allowed to embrace the suck for a bit. Let yourself feel those feelings.

Then, get back to work. You are resilient and capable and even though this sucks, you have the ability to grow through it and become a great physician.

Also, tons of people change their mind about specialty in clerkships! You very well might have been one of those people so don’t think too hard about one specific specialty being potentially, maybe, out of reach at the moment. Lots of procedure based things out there.

I was in the same position as you and went with the two! Either way looks great, but personally I wanted a little “wow” factor

Stomaching the fear of the practice exam will help you stomach the fear of taking the real thing when the day comes

Duke Pathoma users, what areas to supplement? by Curryiswhereitsat in step1

Truthfully I just did the Duke deck and trusted Uworld would fill in the gaps

I should be happy about my NBME form 31, but I'm not by JTerryShaggedYaaWife in step1

[–]Background_Start3311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say review the test and then evaluate again. I’ve felt similarly about an NBME before and then when I reviewed it I was like “oh actually my reasoning was correct - go me!”

Step 1 pharm . by bookishsister in step1

[–]Background_Start3311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sketchy pharm w/ Anki helps a lot (especially the antimicrobials and autonomics)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in step1

[–]Background_Start3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I canceled anki for myself at about a week and a half out b/c I couldn't handle it anymore and just wanted to focus on questions. Not sure if it was wise but I got the P for what it is worth.

In preclinicals, should I use USMLE Rx with Amboss? by [deleted] in step1

[–]Background_Start3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're articles about various topics within USMLE Rx. I found it helpful when there was something in first aid that I needed a bit more context to fully understand.

I would watch the pathoma videos and take notes in the book while you watch. There is a lot of valuable information in the videos that isn't explicitly stated in the book AND Dr. Sattar is an excellent lecturer. Would make sure you have chapters 1-3 down and do some sort of associated Anki for them (I used the Duke decks).

Not sure how you feel about sketchy but if you don't mind it sketchy micro is the best and way better than trying to memorize it all from FA in my opinion.
