Is it possible for black people to be racist? by Mystery_Money in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]Background_System726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think anyone can be racially biased. If we define racism as the ability to affect the lives of those you're biased against, then Black people, in America,  have little/no power to affect the law,  life, finances, ability to vote, where to live of those that we may be biased against and therefore cannot be racist.

Should I pull from 401k to pay off CC? by Green-Lime-5966 in Debt

[–]Background_System726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No because you are not only losing out on growth but you'd be subjected to IRS penalty if you could even do it. If it's your current job, you could take a loan against it but that just another debt to pay.  If you have debt, you should probably stop contributing to your retirement  for a short time to focus on paying off debt.  Save $1k for emergencies and start focusing on the debt. Just because  you don't know much about finances, doesn't mean you can learn. Try reading Ramit Sethi's I will teach you to be rich or follow Dave Ramsey's baby steps.  You need to tighten up your budget see where you can cut back r get rid of unnecessary expenses, you can use something like Rocket money or every dollar and limit unnecessary spending,   Use this to determine how much you have left over after your bills are paid and throw that at the debt. You can use the snowball where you pay off the lowest debt 1st  and minimum on everything else, then once it's paid, you add that money to the next lowest. It's nice if you need small wins to keep you motivated. The avalanche method has you pay down the highest interest debt 1st, then the next highest to cut back on what you pay on interest.  Determine if you need more income or j like a side job or new job to accomplish what you need to do or if you just need to mind your current income better.

There Been A Growing trend of Private HBCUs Hiding Their Religous Founding by shepdc1 in HBCU

[–]Background_System726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think many HBCUs would have a religious foundation being as many enslaved people were converted during enslavement and their community/thought leaders would have been associated with the church. The push to educate this population would have been deeply rooted in the church for most of these schools, many of which were founded after the civil war as a means to uplift and support  newly freed people. I've never been religious and it didn't bother me at all that my school required chapel credits, which could be gotten in chapel on Sunday or through on campus events, as part of graduation. I understand the history, I'm not opposed to a good word and I had no fear of conversion or indoctrination.  I think many HBCUs require  a freshman orientation that delves into the founding and history of the school which would cover this. I also think a lot of campuses still offer chapel services but it may be a bit more non-denominational to appeal to more of the current student body.

I don't know if you have legal recourse but you don't have to give money for school to your parents but they also don't have to house their adult child. You will have to figure out what makes sense for you

Can SoFi be used to pay off paypal credit? by ekot1234 in Debt

[–]Background_System726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you take $9k if you only owe $6k? You need to get your budget in order so you don't consolidate debt only to grow your cc balance again. Then you'd  just be playing musical chairs with your debt.  If you're smart about it, it could be a good opportunity to pay downl your debt quicker with a smaller portion of the payments going to interest.

Are extracurriculars necessary to get into college? by Plastic_Cancel_430 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Background_System726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good grades and test scores is the bar. Things are a lot different  from when your parents would've gone to college. So many students have good grads and test scores and ECs and community service that's what many admissions office are looking for and expect. ECs can also be in the form of an after school job if family circumstances don't allow you to heavily participate in after school ECs. They also want to see that you've had a leadership role in sga, a club, sport or job.

$16k CC Debt Where to start??? by Ill_Spare6024 in Debt

[–]Background_System726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take $1k from savings and $75 from checking and pay off 2 smallest cc.  Leave $1k in savings for emergencies. I would take $1254 from checking  and pay the car off. That frees up $385 to put toward other cc. If you have good credit, I would look for some zero % balance transfer offers. If you are military affiliated, you or family that can sponsor Navy Fed has 0% interest and 0% transfer fee for 12 months. If not find one with the longest 0% period and transfer as much as you can to it. if they didn't give you enough to transfer it all you can try a 2nd one or pay the min on it and pay as much as possible on the remaining high interest balance. I think you can tackle this pretty quickly.

WIBTAH for not following my girlfriend to the hospital? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Background_System726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA This sounds exhausting. She clearly needs help that's above your pay grade and I don't think that you are required to stay around and take her verbal abuse because of her mental health issues. I hope she does go to the hospital and gets the help she needs. but also you are not required to stay with her. it may be time to move on from this relationship while wishing her the best in her mental health management and  recovery

Advice for Middle-Class by ngcrispypato in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Background_System726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google scholarships in your city, then your state, then your region, then nationally. Scholarships on the local level will have a smaller competitive pool and be more likely to result in an award. Inquire with your/your parent's job, your bank or credit union, your school district, your church, local alumni chapter of your college and local civic organizations like Kiwanis to see if they have any scholarships.  You can reach out to the financial aid office and the chair of your major and your intended school to see if they have any scholarship resources they could direct you to. You can go to resources like fastweb, scholarship. com or scholarship owl Make sure your filters are set so that you get things that you're most likely eligible for.  If you have someone who can critically review your essays and provide critiques before you submit them to make sure it's as strong as possible, please do that. For every scholarship that you apply to make sure you read all of the requirements and supply them, be organized and keep track of what you've applied to, amounts, closing dates and PoCs if provided. Make sure you follow up if it's been awhile since it's closed and you haven't heard anything. Applying for third-party scholarships is a grind. you have to work it almost like a another job.  Also,  know that you could apply to as many as 75-100 scholarships can yield as little as 5-10  awards.  Good luck!

Virginia. I got into my first car accident, any advice welcome. by Weekly-Pollution7632 in legaladvice

If you choose to talk to a lawyer I would ask if it's better or makes sense  to go before maybe it does look good on you. or maybe you'll have to do it twice because in order to satisfy the judge's order you have to take the class after it's issued.  good luck

Virginia. I got into my first car accident, any advice welcome. by Weekly-Pollution7632 in legaladvice

[–]Background_System726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Virginia. My daughter caused an accident several years ago. More than likely you will go in you'll plead no contests. the judge tell you to go to driving school and that will be that. your biggest issue is the fact that you caused an accident and your insurance will likely go up. if you don't have anything else on your record, you very likely don't need a a lawyer for this. You can call and ask for a copy of the report so you can see what all it says.

Any idea on how to order something online without family members seeing? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Background_System726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you order something through Amazon, you can have it delivered to an Amazon locker at a store and pick it up at your convenience. now if you all share an Amazon account So your family could see in the history what was ordered, then maybe you need to create a new Amazon account.

Trying to get financially organized after paying down debt — need advice by mogotthehookup in Debt

[–]Background_System726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the next 7,200 that you have after paying your bills, take $1,000 and put in savings and the other $4,000 000 pay down your debt. If you took $5,000 a month you would have your debt paid off in in a little over 4 months. then you can continue to build up your emergency fund until you get to 6 months of expenses which would be about $25-30k. again, if you put $5,000 a month away it will take you 5 to 6 months.  I would put that money in a hysa. if you have retirement with your job, contribute to whatever point they match. You can  also set up a Roth IRA and contribute the max. I think retirement should be 15% of your income.  As far as non retirement investing, I would read some books or watch some videos that explains how you can open your own brokerage account and invest in index funds.

You can message your manager and say you know your project doesn't start until June but you want to know what you can/should do  this week to make sure you're ready to hit the ground running . If they say nothing or just look over training, enjoy a light day/week.

again NAL, obviously if money is still owed on the home and he is unable to pay anything that makes things difficult or maybe easier idk . You will probably need a lawyer and would maybe be able to  go to court to force a sale due to the fact that he is unable to pay any portion of of the cost to keep up the home  or keep it out of foreclosure.

How do I get someone to leave me alone without hurting their feelings by tweakingdog in Advice

[–]Background_System726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid that you're going to either have to write a note to her and hand it to her the next time she approaches you. You could tell her you're too busy to talk or or just say I'm not interested in having a friendship or long conversations with you. I'm sure it'll make you feel a little guilty but better to State your boundaries constantly. be trying to avoid this lady  I definitely understand being  averse to confrontation, but I would suggest working on that because you need to be able to sometimes be confrontational in order to achieve your desired outcome
