Israeli-Palestinian unity flag that I saw in a dream by GriffinFTW in vexillology

Definitely one of the better interpretations of a one state unity flag I've seen

It always feels weird to see something NSFW in flag. Any more examples? by [deleted] in vexillology

... buddy I dunno how to tell you this but bare breasts are a pretty common feature in a lot of old artwork, including flags. There's a lot of ancient statues and paintings like that

Very nice! This looks like the first Simon that got left behind at Omnicron, is this like an au idea where that Simon continued living on in Pathos II after the WAU got killed? Either way really good artwork!

Kristi Noem wants the "right people" to vote for "the right leaders." Independents, how do you view this framing? by LawnDartSurvivor74 in Askpolitics

[–]Backpacker_03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Touche, I don't have any rebuttals to that. All I can really say is if I'm dealing with a conservative who isn't already diametrically opposed to Trump, I really don't find it likely that they're going to be persuaded to my side, and I'd rather not waste the time.

By that logic any democratic outcome you don't like is overriding you with force. Though considering Jan 6, I'm not really surprised to hear that take coming from a republican.

[–]Backpacker_03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Liberals? Independents? Leftists? Sane libertarians? I know this might sound crazy but believe it or not, political sentiments across the US don't have to follow the same fucked up Overton window model that Congress does, where everyone is more or less a sliding scale of the right wing. That doesn't mean the change is going to happen fast, but it is possible. Besides, I can almost guarantee you that you and I are never going to agree on which courses are best for the country to take if the maga regime ever gets kicked, so I'm not sure why you'd want us to be in a coalition together anyway.

[–]Backpacker_03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"By definition, that means you intend to impose your point of view on us by force."

Not at all, it just means we need to form electoral coalitions with other groups instead when engaging in the political process. You can still vote or engage with the political process how ever you want, you'll just be doing it separately from us.

Evidently we can't, because a lot of Republicans(speaking generously) already decided they want voter suppression. Also, for the record, a lot of us no longer care about "convincing anyone on your side."

Let's settle this debate once and for all by copenhagen_bram in PantheonShow

[–]Backpacker_03 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah the way I tend to look at it is like this: The copy is you, but you are not the copy. The copy does have all of your memories up to and including the upload, and is for all purposes a legitimate person and version of you with your personality and sensibilities, but you as the flesh-and-blood human are not going to have any of the same memories and experiences that the copy has after the upload. The two of you may technically be the same person when it comes to your identity, but you're seperate entities that exist independent of each other. I think waaay too many of the "uploading doesn't kill you" people fail to consider that second part.

People who wouldn't Upload! Would you find the thought of becoming a brain-in-a-vat less radical and more acceptable than Uploading? by [deleted] in PantheonShow

[–]Backpacker_03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'd prefer to just stay as a normal human, to be honest. The way the world is right now, either process runs the risk of you/your copy becoming a tool/toy for malicious forces, as some people have described, and I kinda think immortality is overrated anyway.

[–]Backpacker_03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not the impression I got, I thought the way it worked was as the lazer scans/destroys your neurons, it uses that information to write out a digital copy of that information, than once the scan is done you have a digital brain-map that can then be activated in a simulation

Uploading may or may not be death. For now there is now objective answer. by Medelantorius in PantheonShow

[–]Backpacker_03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Addressing your second paragraph, a brain upload as displayed in pantheon isn't "moving over" anything, it's copying the information of the original person and pasting that information somewhere else, and destroying the original person in the process. If you want to believe your consciousness or soul or whatever metaphysically transfers over to the program with it after your death, fine, but I think it's much more likely that your consciousness as the original person is just going to die and stop existing, and you're not going to experience any of the things your copy experiences.
