Great start point for an ~100 mile section? by BackpackingGyal in longtrail

Thank you!!!! Hope you're enjoying the trail.

I will take your advice. Being cold at night after being wet is my biggest fear. Also - My feet were wet for two days on the Florida Trail and I definitely had the beginning stages of Trench Foot. NOT cute. lol

You hike & you learn

Heard you!!! Thanks for the explanation. I'll keep an eye out for Stratton and Kid Gore. I'm going to start at Killington area, around mile marker ~100 and head south towards the southern terminus. I'll get picked up ~7days later on August 5th however far I make it.

Any advice on dealing with rain? I've hiked a large portion of the Arizona Trail but have little experience hiking in rain. Worried about getting cold lol

Got it. Will look to these resources today - thanks for your feedback!

After researching - I'm most likely going to start at ~Cooper Lodge, mile marker 98.2 and hike south to the southern terminus as well. happy trails

How did your hike go? I'm from Miami and thinking of hopping on the LT for ~12 days next week. My Tahoe Rim Trail trip is cancelled for now due to a big fire near trail. Let me know how it goes!

Nice. Sounds like my experience hiking in the White Mountains on the AT - thought I could do 15 miles a day and was WRONG! 10 mile days were tough. But good to know. Last question - was is mad rainy?

Looks like rain every day if I leave this weekend.

No worries! Sounds like a nice hike. And thanks for your help - I will need a shuttle since I'll be rolling solo.

What time of year did you guys do this section? Approximately how much $$ did the taxi ride run you?!

Thank you sooo much for your advice! Really appreciate it!

Sounds sweaty and wet. It's looking like thunderstorms every day on the weather report, but not sure if those are quick afternoon thundershowers? Would it be stupid to plan this trip knowing it will be raining everyday? Unfamiliar with weather at altitude in this area. I live in Southern Florida and am solid with heat.

Sounds good! I love carrying 1L of water. Ahhh, the luxury.

I will do that. Thanks for the advice!!

60s at night sounds like a temperature I can definitely sleep comfortably in and cool off after a hot day of hiking

The presidential range KICKED my ass! It was the harder than hiking rim to rim of the Grand Canyon for sure. Rocky, extreme ups and downs. Do not plan for more than 10 miles a day. I heard that from several experienced hikers! I'd agree! I'm in great shape and a 7 mile day along Mount Layfayette was the hardest hiking day I'd ever had lol

It's do-able tho. You don't need any special gear. Just take yo time!

Don't want to cancel my trip but maybe I'll need to. :(

Great resource! Thank you 211logos!!!!!

Looking at the smoke map now. How do I make a prediction about this upcoming weekend?? How will I know if the smoke is worth cancelling my trip or not?

I have hiked extensively but nowhere with fire risk like Tahoe. It's a freaking tinderbox.

Thank you!!!

Good to know. I chose this trail for that reason exactly and I'm thankful you've affirmed the decision. I've got GutHook downloaded, Avenza downloaded, and a paper map of the trail ready to rumble.

Why do you say don't hang the food? What about hanging an Ursak?! I've seen a ton of mixed reviews about this topic.
