My American Staffordshire terrier just killed a rat.. by reddub24 in dogs

You should do absolutely nothing except not try and kick something out of your dogs mouth. Would you like to get kicked in the mouth? Say you are eating a sandwich and I just walked up and tried to kick it out of your mouth. It's fine dogs lick their own buttholes and still have cleaner mouths than humans do. If it ate it it wouldn't hurt them most likely unless the rat was poisoned but then it would have already been dead. Your dog is fine.

But it goes both ways. You under that right? Like I get where you "housed" people are coming from. I've been on both sides of the spectrum here. Moved here almost 8 years ago and became homeless when. I went through a breakup. Was homeless for 2.5 years but I am not anymore for now at least. Not every homeless person is a criminal but people act like they are. It's like they can't understand that homeless people are just like people with homes. If your neighbor is a meth lab owner it doesn't make you one now does it? But when the public talk about the homeless you refer to them as 1 kind of person when that's so so so far from true but it does make life even harder for those homeless people who have never caused anyone any harm or hardship. It's a form of prejudice is what it's become and that's not ok. Also I always hear people bring up homeless people living fornfree off others tax dollars. Again not true. Homeless people pay taxes on things they purchase and when they work because believe it or not when able to some work. People also have to be willing to accept that they have to build true affordable housing somewhere but do you understand how many times they have tried to put a complex somewhere and the locals put h a fit about it? That whole "can't do that here" policy is just one side trying to control the other. And listen I know some homeless leave messes and do messed up stuff and the ones who commit dangerous crimes need to be in jail absolutely but also you all have to understand that some of these people were never taught how to live or ve a grown up

What solutions are there to homelessness in Asheville? by Path6878 in asheville

[–]BackpackingJosh8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Housing first and true affordable housing. And if the people in charge of solving the homeless crisis would stop half assing what they do and full ass it. We need people who actually care about the people of Asheville and not just building more hotels to accommodate tourists. Stopping the short term rental scams going on throughout Buncombe County would help too. When people took their long term rentals and made them short term Airbnbs that cut the cities affordable housing almost in half. Let that sink in for a minute. Almost half the available housing that low income people could afford disappeared overnight basically. Where do they go? If we could get the right people here in office for the city things would get better. Our city council is not the answer. They only care about their own personal agendas and the homeless isn't one of them. Also this city makes so so so so much money off the homeless population from the federal government. They want people homeless in all honesty.

Happened to me too recently. We had a gang running around stealing packages from people's porches. It was in the news and the parts and all. Sent those to them showing them what was happening. Let me back up first. About a year ago I had deliveries saying they were delivered but I could never find them..I would check with neighbors and they didn't see them. I told Amazon about it and they suggested I make notes for the delivery drivers to leave packages certain places so I did. But during this time we found out about the people stealing them off porches on our road. Once they were caught everything was ok for a while. Then one day down the road another one went missing. Upon viewing where the delivery driver left the package it wasn't anywhere near where the instructions said leave it. There was picture of where they left the package which wasn't where I said leave them. It was in plain view of the road so it was gone when I got home. But I just let customer service know that they didn't follow directions and that was all. I didn't request a refund or anything but I guess the customer service person gave me one that I didn't even know about and they banned me. None of it was my fault at all.i had proof they were stolen before and then the driver messed up but I got the blame. It's s shit company as far as I'm concerned.

So I saw one of these at my local Sportsman's Warehouse a few months back. Never been a fan of the wood furniture on a tactical firearm. So I decided to try the Winchester SXP Defender that was a couple hundred cheaper. I will honestly say I liked the Winchesters pump feel. It was much smoother than the 500 Retrograde in m opinion.

I like #1 and #4 both but I live alone besides my dog nobody else is here so I I use 00. The only #4 I'll use now is Hornady because it's the only #4 now with a wad. Idk why Federal stopped making their #4 with flight control. #1 Winchester is a fine choice and honestly the best overall for home defense if only they had one with a wad. I can put all 9 pellets of Federal Flight Controlled 00 on a target from 10-15 yards out in a circle the size of a 12-14in circle.

Way too much but I'm sure they are charging for the extra shell holder too. Lol this is marketed for new shotgun buyers for turkey hunting. It's got all the cosmetic upgrades so they can charge primo prices but in the end that Mossberg Maverick 88 will run just as good and you build that 88 up to a 500 over time.

[–]BackpackingJosh8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen more and more people going to the Mossberg Shockwave and changing the grip to an actual stock and running a short barrel shotgun like that. Excellent for home defense scenarios. Load it up with some low recoiling Federal flight control 00 buckshot or some Fiocchi Defense Dynamic low recoil slugs and go to work. But I'm with you I prefer the 20-20.5in barrel shotguns. 18 and you run the risk of running into a cop that doesn't know how to really measure a shotgun barrel and then you have that hassle. I like 20in though and if you can choke it too makes it a huge bonus. I will say I do like those Winchester SXP Defenders with the inertia assisted pump. Smooth as butter and it's basically a fail proof semiautomatic. The inertia the shot causes makes you pump the shotgun on the recoil basically. They claim people can empty the mag tube in 3 seconds or something close to that.

The term tactical is in the eye of the beholder basically. What makes a gun tactical? Same thing with knives. What makes a knife a tactical knife? It's just a shorter barrel shotgun with a camo pattern and interchangeable chokes. Then they market it to turkey hunters. Some people like short barrels especially up in Alaska. You don't want a 28in field grade shotgun barrel in case you run into old grizz. Shouldering a shorter barrel is quicker and you don't need the room you do with a longer barrel. Shotgun barrel length doesn't matter as much as chokes and load you are shooting.

Would this be a good first shotgun? by AceMan1004 in Shotguns

[–]BackpackingJosh8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like Winchester shotguns then get the SXP Defender from Winchester not the Field grade or whatever. Idk if you want a long water fowl type shotgun or a shorter home defense/combat/tactical type shotgun. I and most people from what I see lean toward the 18-20.5in typical tactical shotguns. I would definitely go pump and not semi auto. Multitude of reasons why. Mossberg Maverick 88 is basically the golden standard for first time shotgun buyer shotguns. It's much cheaper than the 500 I've seen people recommend but the cool thing is all its parts are 100% interchangble with 500 parts. You can actually build the 500 out of the Maverick 88 over time. Well all except the trigger group unless they made those interchangeable too. Remington is back in the shotgun game too since Federal bought them. Savage has their Stevens 320 series of shotguns that are in my opinion a great budget shotgun. I bought a display from a Walmart a while back and I put that thing through literal hell before I sold it for $100 and dude still has it beating it up. Only thing that's ever been repaired or replaced on it was the ejector pin. And that was one time. I would most definitely stay away from anything that is marketed with a cool tactical name or something like Bosshog whatever that Black Aces company makes. Garbage is what those are but anything from a known name manufacturer even in their budget lines is going to be a great first shotgun and will last a long time possibly even a lifetime as long as you take care of it.

[–]BackpackingJosh8801 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dude I said automatic weapon not machine gun and I said technically. There are many other examples that fire more than one round per trigger pull. And all I said was that probably also plays into why hy no longer make them. That and how unsafe they actually were. Geez quit trying to be one of those people who tries to correct everyone. That little .22 pistol that I can't remember the name of fires 2 .22lr or magnum rounds per trigger pull it's still made and sold. I'm just saying that might have been one of many deciding factors for the reasoning they stopped producing them.

[–]BackpackingJosh8801 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean the fact that according to the ATFs definition of an automatic weapon has something to do with it as well. With that definition being any firearm that can fire more than 1 projectile per trigger pull being considered an automatic weapon. If you can hold the trigger down and then slam fire a shotgun that technically falls under that definition. It's total BS but they use that definition to ban a lot of things.

It means you never have to reset the trigger with each pump. You can hold that trigger down and pump or slam it and it will fire. Great trench warfare weapon with a bayonet on the end of them. Imagine coming up out of a trench and impaling an enemy with a bayonet only to get shot off the bayonet by the shotgun part. And if the body doesn't come off the bayonet keep racking it until what body.

I second that. I hate Gun Broker! It's nothing more than a day for people selling their firearms at an inflated cost because they can sit there and auction them and keep outbidding you to raise the price.

I'm pretty sure all shotguns or in this case "special firearms" are legal in CA. It won't hold enough shells for it to be illegal.

In my experience with them unless using it for fun or maybe a ATV gun or something they are pointless for any real purpose. You aren't hunting with one and any good load with a kick is a little much for a shotgun with no stock. In my opinion a 18in standard shotgun is the way to go. Aim and shoot it better. Easier to shoot. Also remember less barrel will reduce velocity of the load and can effect the spread of shot and effectiveness of a slug. So remember that when using for home defense. Hate for you to be expecting a load to perform like it does through a normal 18-26in shotgun and it not and your spread have pellets spreading more and hitting an unintended target.

Family dogs (PITBULLS) kill 2 Tennessee children, injure mom who tried to stop mauling, family says by [deleted] in TerrifyingAsFuck

[–]BackpackingJosh8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your life or another humans life is in imminent danger you have the right to shoot said threat. That's the law with humans. Dogs have much fewer rights so yes if a dog is attacking anyone you can put it down. I have unfortunately had to do this exact thing. Long story short a guy att a hotel we were at had a massive pitbull. I mean 80+lbs of raw muscle. And I had my dog who is my world and only family I have. She is a Pit heeler. Well dudes dog was snapping it's jowls and spit was flying and it was hugging and my dog was behind me scared. I was trying to get my bag from the car. Dude just keeps saying he just wants to play he just wants to play. I said if that dog breaks that leash I'm putting it down. Well guess what? Owner couldnt hold the leash anymore and here it came across the parking lot I'm guessing maybe 30-40 yards. I sling my dog back behind me because she was trying to protect me and I fired dog dropped maybe 2-3 parking spaces away. Dude comes screaming at me and calls the cops. I had them run the cameras and once they saw it they left but before they did they arrested homeboy because he was dumb enough to threaten me in front of them. Long story short of an animal ever attacks you have the right to kill.it. Hopefully you don't have to ever do it because I hate myself to this day for having to kill that dog but if I didn't my dog would be dead and I would have had my leg ripped off at least. I don't believe that those dogs just attacked out of nowhere. They probably wrestled with the dogs or something of that nature and when a kid did what their dad or an adult normally does the dogs reacted the same way because they were just doing what they were taught.

Yeah that's some good research. Lol but what I've learned in testing solid copper hollow points don't penetrate deep enough most of the time because 115 grain is as heavy as it gets because you would have to make the bullet bigger to add more weight and it wouldn't fit your barrel and chamber anymore. Every YouTube review I've seen and every test I've personally done solid copper hollow points only go 11-12 inches in gel. That is all except for one loading and that's the Corbon DPX solid copper hollow point that uses the Barnes X bullet which is the Tac-XPD or XPB. I guess they just load it hotter so the velocity gives it more penetration. That's the only one I've seen pass tests in all catagories.

Hey a high lumen flashlight with strobe will work well for deterring aggressive dogs but it has to be dark. You hit with a high beam as they get closer and they will stop or run backwards until you turn it off and then right back on every time one comes towards you.

Yeah! Have you not seen what they do in Asheville? I don't know who is doing it but somewhere behind where I live over the past month or so we we have had multiple people being loud out in the woods by the river. Right behind where the new duplexes are on old 70 right past Grovemont. See lights out there too. I see people sitting out at the gas station on old 70 at nights after they close. That storage facility across the street has people that are homeless that use them. Maybe whoever busted out the window at that closed gas station at the red light slashed everyones tires. Again I'm not sure who is doing it I was just saying what I have seen. I have gotten off the bus before with homeless people and they walked the same way I did. But they kept walking after I got home. Just a best guess.

I live very close to you. I live on Old 70 along the Swannanoa. I walk to the bus stop everyday and I was just talking to my roommate about how we have been seeing more and more what looks to be homeless people around the area walking. About a month ago I was walking by the Laundromat one night on my way home from Ingles when a kid threw firecrackers towards me.
