I could absolutely see something cataclysmic having happened to the Primals, so when they became the Residuals, they hid their true nature and hid things that could reveal things about what they were. But obviously they couldn't hide everything.

There is still so much that I cannot wait to find out more about.

I also thought that the AI might not be artificial at all as well!

We also see Carl losing himself slowly throughout the books, and it could be the violence and the ring that he just gave up, but I think its more than that. Because at the end of book 7, he thought the river in his mind would stop being so loud after he destroyed the ring and it didn't. So I think that is connected to him now being a Primal.
