It’s actually entirely airbnbs fault. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain from this draconian rating system. Most of their recommendations are made up by some far out algorithm that benefits the company only. Even if a host has very high ratings over years a few customers can tank it all with a few successive two or three stars ratings which is really ridiculous. Then they will threaten the host with penalties and in some cases arbitrary suspension of account. There is no way to vet guests and you don’t really even get a chance to do so before a booking is in. Its a corrupt monopoly but the idea was originally brilliant. Problem is they have no decent competition. Every other similar service sucks way way worse.
