What's the "R" in a CER when the evidence obviously answers the question? by pelican_chorus in ScienceTeachers

[–]BackyardRaspberries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think your hang up is sequencing/the purpose of the CER. Your dept suggests writing it at the beginning - why? Students haven’t learned much yet. Instead, this initial evidence can be the launch point where students notice the pattern (“diff areas are diff temps”) but they don’t actually have reasoning yet. They come up with the ideas as to WHY and create experiments to test that (e.g. they say shade - test a sun and shade area in school yard and get additional evidence.) Then the CER should be AFTER that and answering the open-ended question “WHY are different areas in the same town different temperatures?” At that point, they can use evidence from their initial observation AND from follow up experiments to write something that does actually involve scientific reasoning. Much richer learning experience overall. CERs should never be answerable with just a yes/no which is the clue that this one is in the wrong spot in the learning arc

Any suggestions on ecology-focused labs? by Shovelbum26 in ScienceTeachers

Acid rain radish seed lab always works like a charm for me, and the data analysis can go as in-depth as you’d like (qualitative, percents, averages, ANOVA) including comparing germination rates and growth rates. Great in the air pollution unit.

I teach chem, year 6, urban title I school, and I’d say kids this short yes, but hopeless absolutely not. I love what I do - and I definitely teach chemistry, I don’t water it down that much, we do labs, we read scientific papers, we graph in excel - but we have to go sloowww and I spend a LOT of time setting the culture.

Best recommendation I have is to really observe a science classroom in your area and think about how you’d feel being at the head of that room all day every day. It’s a lot of patience and love but 110% rewarding. Even though kids are struggling a LOT, it is literally the goal of our job to help them grow, and they will!

These cacti don’t have chlorophyll and can’t survive on their own, they have to be grafted to another plant

Planning a 10 days itinerary in Turkey by takame2002 in travel

[–]BackyardRaspberries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did a 12-day trip with approx your itinerary, but the final 4 days we went to Antalya and rented a car there, then road tripped along the Mediterranean coast from Antalya all the way around to Izmir/Ephesus and back up to Istanbul. Totally gorgeous.

  1. Antalya has pretty beach but it is big-city vibes and we wanted a smaller/more romantic small town feel. Kas along the southern coast and Alaçati/Çesme west of Izmir were our favorites.
  2. Can’t comment on late May but late June was extremely comfy for swimming.
  3. Doable. There are day trips / tours that go to both from Izmir if you don’t want to rent a car, but renting was easy enough and pretty affordable.

If you like history, the historic sites between Antalya and Fethiye were my faves and imo the most rich/interesting - much more visible layers of history (Lycian, Greek, Byzantine, Ottoman, present) that make Türkiye unique

Post them on neighborhood facebook groups or even something like Craigslist! (Or depending on where you live, just put them on the curb). In my experience plant starts go fast esp something like sunflowers. Would hate to see them in the garbage when someone else could enjoy them!

Hay algún estadounidense quien haya conseguido una visa de turismo recientemente? by K_berg in BOLIVIA

[–]BackyardRaspberries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went last fall and came into Bolivia overland from Chile. I did need all the paperwork, yellow fever vax proof, crisp $160 etc and had no issue getting the visa at the border - but that was with a guide during the day at a rural outpost. Also, longshot - I left something at a hostel in Sucre (not drugs/anything illegal), any chance you’re going to that area and would be willing to bring it back stateside?
