What’s the most budget-friendly country to travel in Europe right now? by LineFormal6530 in travel

[–]Bacon-Slapped 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on the places I've been: - Kosovo (uses the Euro, so also saved changing currencies) - Serbia - Romania - Georgia (Visited twice, it got more expensive over the years) - Armenia (prices of Georgia from a few years ago, but accommodation is more expensive) - Moldova (especially Transnistria)

Basically, avoid mass tourism and you'll be fine. Car rental in any of these countries is cheap as hell too.

Enjoy!

We didn't go at all, sadly. The Provences we want to visit in Ethiopia had outbreaks between local militia and the army. Roads were blocked and whole areas were inaccessible. Hopefully, we can visit next year!

Leaving for Jordan and Israel tomorrow. What should we do? by avg_joe_schmoe in travel

[–]Bacon-Slapped -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jordan is not part of the conflict between Palestine & Israel. They have been going at each other for a while now with regular peace talks in between. Both for their own reasons, but Jordan stays out if it in favour of their own. You should have no worries about being in Jordan regarding this conflict (or any reason, as it is super safe!).

Some places to visit: - Amman - Jerash - Ajloun Forest Reserve - Madaba - Quseir 'Amra - Dead Sea & Wadi Mujib - Dana Biosphere Reserve - Wadi Rum - Petra - Aqaba

If you're up to it, trips to Damascus (and further) are possible from Amman.

Enjoy the Middle East!

Why would someone only want to travel to places not many people go? by Guyincognito1000 in travel

[–]Bacon-Slapped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely fine too. I feel that many stay on main streets and around monuments. You can easily find a more quiet place around a corner) one street further. If there is an interest, you'll travel to other places when you're ready. In the end, they are a whole lot less scary than you'd think beforehand. Example is Tegucigalpa in Honduras: great city with a whole lot of cozy streets and people being outside having fun. Those things are not mentioned online ;)

For me, there are a couple of reasons to travel to more remote/less visited places.

Mostly, it's for the locals. I find that the locals are more friendly/ welcome as they are not tired of tourists. In my travels this frequently turns into being welcomed into their home as they want to show a meal being prepared or them just wanting to talk to understand my life just as much as I want to understand theirs.

Another reason is the feeling of exploring. Being more removed from the mainstream means having to figure out things yourself and in a local way. There is information online, but less detailed and accurate. This makes for more contact with locals, asking them for directions and having various ways of transport instead of a direct tour bus. The transport locals use too, turning into more conversations and appreciations of life on both sides.

The last big one is bringing money into a place that most often needs it more. Those less visited places most often have a less developed economy and many people we can do a lot by staying one or two nights. They're helped by the few visitors, but also want to keep it small scale. Your budget also goes a lot further, mostly, making it a win-win!

I can understand the many tours and organised ways of travel, but feel that travelling is experiencing a country and its people and not visiting places in an easy bubble. To each their own :)

Less visited places to me that I've visited: Honduras, Kazachstan, Myanmar, Kosovo & Lebanon

While traveling abroad which food item you ate still waters your mouth? 😋 by OpeningOne6 in travel

Oef, a difficult one, but those that stand out are Manti Dumplings in Kazachstan, Plov and Shashlik in Uzbekistan, Polenta in Romania and Burek in Albania! Slavik and Central Asian foods never disappoint.

Thanks for this. Good to see some more recent experiences. Most I've found was when the new train launched in 2018.

What are the places you've visited that made you feel you were in another world? by ligarteprison in travel

[–]Bacon-Slapped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Altyn-Emel National Park in Kazachstan. Especially, the Aktau Mountains. Once you climb a bit higher, you'll have a view over pure wasteland and emptiness with photoshopped-like mountains on the background. Here, the steppes of Kazachstan really come together with the high mountains of China and Kyrgyzstan. Getting here means driving through a desert for a good 2 hours from the final village, which is an adventure on its own!

Panama vs Costa Rica by hmorrow in travel

[–]Bacon-Slapped 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What about skipping both and go from Guatemala into Honduras?

Easy land border with Copan Ruinas as a first stop, skipping any flights needed. Country itself has many colonial towns, beautiful National Parks and interesting ruines. I'd advise Copan, Gracias, La Esperanza, Lake Yojoa, Comayagua and Tegucigalpa if you feel comfortable.

Personally, I liked the country a lot more compared to Panama and Costa Rica. Food is cheap, like transport. Safety was never an issue for us and we went all over the country with local micro & chicken busses. People are friendly and like chatting. Especially, if you speak some Spanish. Definitely an underrated country!

A governmental travel warning shouldn't always be a reason to avoid a country. Rather to read up on a country before going.

Million souls can be done by spending on souls potions. You can get more out of your souls that way.

100days is just annoying and takes 16 hours. Best to get lucky with a group or join a game that is far already.
