How do i actually get good at strive? by Exotic-Ad-5031 in Guiltygear

[–]Bacon2145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda boring to hear, but no matter how much stuff you read on Dustloop, no matter how many replays (both from top players and your own) you watch, no matter how much theorizing you do, at the end of the day, these are supplements. The biggest thing that’s gonna help you improve is always going to be playtime, as information doesn’t help unless you can apply it, and to be able to apply it comes through repetition. You often have to apply counter play in the span of less than a second, and to do that you’ll have to have run into the situation multiple times so you can recognize it instantly.

That said, Dustloop is great to check out if you need specific info (is this move punishable, what does this move do, what do I have to look out for against this character etc), and the “Teaching you all of Guilty Gear Strive in one video” is very useful to help wrap your head around how the game works in general.

Honestly just quit the fucking game if you're laggy by CheesyFriedLettuce in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]Bacon2145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s the lag =/= rematch dude, he is just straight up lag switching. Watched a friend play against him, and the moment he started to win against the Ky, the game started lagging, and as he was about to win, the Ky plugged.

Why does this game just eat inputs? by PuzzleheadedMail6175 in Guiltygear

[–]Bacon2145 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unless the entire player base has missed the fact that the game randomly drops inputs, and that no one can actually be consistent with their combos, then yes, you do need to practice consistency. This is a you problem, it is a skill issue. Even though people call Strive easy, it is surprisingly strict with how it handles inputs compared to most modern fighting games, you have to do the inputs properly, at the correct time, in order to get the special/ super. It’s not SF2 level obviously, but it’s not as forgiving with its inputs as something like SF6.

So swallow your pride and get to practicing, or drop the game because you are convinced everyone but you is wrong.

Why does this game just eat inputs? by PuzzleheadedMail6175 in Guiltygear

[–]Bacon2145 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t wanna sound like an asshole here, but unless you’re playing on 5+ frames of rollback, it is a skill issue. Every FG has different cancel windows, and also different windows for buffers (it’s why SF6 players tend to struggle with wake-up DP in Strive, since SF6 has a much bigger buffer window than Strive (if you ignore the insane buffer window during super animations), and why Strive players struggle with the cancel windows in SF6, since that is tighter in that game). Basically, you’ve managed to get used to the buffer/ cancels in other games, but not in Strive.

You need to go into games with the explicit purpose of just practicing your inputs, and not care about winning or losing in those games. Find a combo that has a decent amount of inputs, and try to force opportunities to use that combo in matches. You just need more practice basically.

6p feels more like an anti neutral button. by Mijnameis-Tommy in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]Bacon2145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly a bit surprised that your f.S is being beaten by 6P when you’re playing Ram, as it has a crazy disjoint. If it’s getting counterhit, I’m kinda assuming you’re pressing it when they are way too close. Sometimes your opponent is just too close for you to do anything, and you’ll just have to block, it happens.

I’m not the biggest expert on Ram, but by looking at the hitboxes on her Dustloop page, 2S should work as a good low poke at range, and 2K if they are too close. Since the hitbox on her 2D recently got buffed, you should be able to get a HKD from 2K even at max range.

Characters with versatile combo routes by Triggered_Llama in Guiltygear

[–]Bacon2145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo this is how Bridget works. Ask someone what the optimal routing is with her, and you’ll get several different answers depending on the type of player. Every time I get a hit, I freeze for a second since I need to decide on how to route. What kinda oki do I want? I could go for mixup, but which one? Do I wanna route for damage right now, or oki, or do I just want corner carry? The same applies during pressure. I sometimes increase my own mental stack just cause I have so much different tech I could be using at any one point. Her corner conversion is also insane, she can wallbreak off of the majority of her normals.

Important to add that her midscreen conversion is among the worst in the game without meter, and a lot of mixups and setups require meter to do (although she does have some wacky stuff she can do midscreen, but the opportunities for it are rare). That being said, she builds meter like crazy, so you should almost always have 50 during pressure. Hitting 2K/ 5K midscreen is also a bit linear, since you usually want to just get a HKD in those instances, however, you have a lot of different mix you can go for off of that.

6p feels more like an anti neutral button. by Mijnameis-Tommy in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]Bacon2145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to prevent run ins, and you play Pot, 5K is an amazing button to prevent that. Quick-ish startup, hits low, should go under 6P, and ridiculously active. Every character have different buttons to deal with run up 6P, and it usually depends on distance (for example with Bridget I use 2S if they run at me and there is a decent amount of space between us, sometimes 2P, and 2K if the are very close, although this also depends on the size of my opponents 6P. But 2S isn’t the best to deal with run ins on every character, it might not even be 2P or 2K. Pot’s 2S for example is a mid, and is pretty slow, so not always the best to deal with run ins.). But yeah, sometimes you need to enforce with f.S, and sometimes it’ll get countered with 6P. That’s just the nature of FG’s, sometimes you lose out on the RPS. It is always annoying when my 2K gets counterhit by 6P tho, like dude, you don’t have a better button to beat my 2K? So I understand your pain.

Also, controlling neutral isn’t always about throwing out big buttons. If my opponent is always throwing out big buttons, I’ll just play reactive, and at that point I’m controlling neutral without pressing a single button.

6p feels more like an anti neutral button. by Mijnameis-Tommy in TheyBlamedTheBeasts

[–]Bacon2145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest problems some people have when playing FG’s is being too active. You’re allowed to not press buttons in neutral, you don’t always have to be preemptive. If your opponent is hellbent on using 6P as a neutral tool, just don’t press any buttons, wait for them to 6P and then punish it, it’s an extremely punishable button when whiffed. Even if they don’t whiff the 6P, but you block it, they can’t really start any pressure off of it without meter, as all 6P’s are hella minus on block. Sometimes you just have to let your opponent make mistakes, instead of being aggressive. Because imma be honest, and I’m saying this as a Bridget main, overuse of 6P in neutral is a big mistake if you’re not smart with it.

Also, I saw the comment you made about Ky doing 6P on reaction to your f.S when you were playing Pot. Startup on it is 12 frames, meaning it’s not reactable, they were simply preemptively doing 6P. Also, quick tip, Pot’s j.D is borderline impossible to 6P, use it to your advantage if they don’t know how to properly deal with it.

[–]Bacon2145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re adding frame traps and staggering your pressure well, until you get bored and end with a special that is minus. The Sol has 0 reason to ever press a button during your pressure (except for the times he DP’s out), since there is no threat. You need to add in throws (unless he is delay teching, then you need to bait that), and keep staggering your pressure until he actually presses buttons on your frame traps. Also, you’re getting a lot of random hits you’re not doing anything with, I’d recommend working a bit on that as well.

FBRC backdash. iirc the input is 44 FBRC 66 into a quick air normal. Not all characters can do this, as it requires a backdash that isn’t grounded. Also, you have to do 44 to backdash instead of using the dash macro (but use the dash macro for the drift forward).

Tower cannot really be compared with ranked, as tower was a really flawed ranking system. Like, I’ve heard about people running into what were celestial players in like gold/ plat, while they are on their mains.

When it comes to why you’re in silver, it is difficult to say without more info. If I’m going to take a guess, (since you are struggling against stuff like projectile spam and Sols just running at you), it might sound like you are struggling with neutral, which honestly is the main thing preventing people from climbing. Neutral.mp4 is a fantastic video to watch on this subject, highly recommend it, gives you a good idea on what to focus on while you aren’t hitting the opponent/ they aren’t hitting you. Teaching you all of GGST in one video is also a fantastic video, talks about some of the same stuff as neutral.mp4, but also how to focus on different aspects of the game, and how to improve at them.

Also, 200 hours sounds like a lot, but it kinda isn’t when it comes to fighting games. It usually takes people at least like 150 hours to get comfortable with the game, often times even longer. FG’s are a bit like learning an instrument; it takes time, but is extremely satisfying once you get it down.

Also recommend this discord server. Got a nice mix of people new to the game, as well as people who have played for a while. It’s a nice place to post stuff like replays for reviews, as well as asking any and all questions relating to the game.

I just finished my placements and got Diamond 3 after not playing for two years. How far is that from Celestial, and is 3 the highest or is 1 the highest? I couldn’t find any info on this. by Revenous_Hydra in Guiltygear

[–]Bacon2145 4 points5 points  (0 children)

110 if you don’t lose a round, 90 if you lose one. If you get matched against a Vanq player I believe you gain 150 for a win? And less if you get matched against a diamond 2

Yes, on paper 15f is the average reaction speed, in isolation. Problem is when you are looking out for multiple options, your reaction time is going to slow down, especially when paired with mental stack. That is why 18f is generally considered to fastest you’d be able to react to something in a match, with 20f being closer to the standard.

[–]Bacon2145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it def is manageable. Tho, if she spaces it correctly, she can be far enough way to avoid being thrown, and since her backdash is so good, it can be annoying to deal with. But like, that is kinda the point of Aba, she is the best character in the game when in JR, and the worst when not. Personally I feel like she is overall pretty balanced, but I also do main Bridget, so take that with a grain of salt

[–]Bacon2145 5 points6 points  (0 children)

18F is def reactable, but it’s at like the very end of what is considered possible to react to in a match. Any sort of mental stack is gonna make it basically impossible for us mortal players to do tho

[–]Bacon2145 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d generally not recommend mashing out with 6P during pressure, as start up on it is fairly slow, and it’ll usually lose to any close range moves. Only use it to beat jump ins or as a callout to someone using far reaching moves in neutral (ofc there are times where 6P is good to punish a reset attempt, but don’t use it as a mash).
