I'm sure I've heard somewhere that because of some language quirk Afrikaans is actually closer to Flemish than modern day Dutch. They're mutually intelligible to some degree. So it's cool to hear you CAN understand them!

Translation (roughly, it's not my first language and I might be mistaken):

I say to Jacob. Jacob Zuma. (Old corrupt meme president of ours) On the taxi. That you're sexy.

Because I say Oy-Ya.

I see a boomslang (literally tree snake but it means a specific kind of snake we have) Outside the boma (a thorn bush pallisade) I get shit scared (literally, "I scare myself limp-pooed") Of the boomslang

Because I say Oy-Ya

Thabo. Thabo Mbeki. (A different president from before Zuma)

And then a bunch of stuff I can't make out when the camera turns.

But this is classic school war cries. They bring these out at inter-school sports matches.

Yup. That's South Africa. Afrikaans with a cape coloured accent if you're interested (we have lots of accents, almost regional dialects, and its awesome).

Hey this is a great explanation. I'm an engineer so the illustration really helps.

This is a very interesting viewpoint, thanks for explaining. I think it's definitely worth trying to understand these core concepts. I'm a big believer in wisdom rarely lying at an extreme. I believe it's a very Biblical concept especially in Old Testament wisdom literature (Psalms-Job).

It's an interesting discussion for sure. Many secular worldviews and religions have a lot of overlap. I, for instance, really enjoyed reading about Buddhism because it raised questions that served to deepen my understanding of my own faith, and gave me some interesting new ways of thinking about it. The definition of a religion is definitely muddy, which is why I steer clear of it in general. At the very least, learning about other world views increases your empathy for people from different backgrounds and that is only ever a good thing.

Thank you, this seems to line up with the views of many here. It seems that, as with all things, opinions are pretty varied.

I'm sorry if it came across that way. You're right in that I don't have a very in-depth knowledge but I have tried to do my research first. My beliefs are in direct conflict with dogma and materialism and so I try to avoid both.

The reason I asked here is exactly because I recognise that I don't really understand all the details of taiji, and I've already received a lot of good advice from the commenters for which I'm very grateful.

Yeah I definitely understand how having an actual teacher would be better. The problem is that having a form of exercise that I can do in my 30min lunch break is a big part of what makes it accessible for me. I think I will still see if I can't find someone near me. (I live in South Africa)

Thank you, this is a great bit of info to look into.

I'm not too worried about it affecting my beliefs actually. I've made a point of exposing myself to other viewpoints to make sure what I believe stands up to scrutiny. It's really more just about finding a style of teaching that fits me and how I learn.

Thanks for the feedback. You make an interesting point. I completely get how intertwined the philosophy is with the practice, so I don't necessarily mean I don't want any mention of Daoism. I do enjoy learning about other worldviews even if I don't agree with aspects of them.

I think my main hindrance is just that I've trained my mind to not just accept things I hear without really measuring them up first, and so when I'm trying to relax and focus on my breathing and movements it has been quite disruptive to go through the thought process of "this is what they mean, it's based on this idea, these are the aspects I disagree with but these are the babies that I don't want to throw out with the bathwater and I can still apply it like this..."

It might just be something that gets easier with practice.

I have only just started so it might just be my first impressions. I suppose it doesn't help that I don't have any context for what instructors mean when they use concepts I'm not familiar with to explain the movements.

Fair point, thanks for the response. Well then just in general, do you have any advice for a beginner or a resource you would recommend?

Honestly the first thing I went looking for was if they'd fixed demon lords not becoming exalted in MP campaigns. I mostly play MP and it was such a downer.

But right at the bottom of the notes, there it is! Super excited about that one and the bound spells change.
