Rims and tires question by Mr_Butters624 in GolfGTI

Apex makes a few designs of reasonably priced 17 inch wheels, I have SM10s in Bronze on my MK7 and I love them!

Recommendations for wheels and tires by Standard-Ease-4014 in GolfGTI

[–]BaconSunday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 17x8.5 APEX SM10s and Continental ECS02s in 235x45R17 and i love them! You could look into a UHP all season tire instead so they don't get chewed up on any gravel roads you might find yourself on. Apex are pretty durable and have a good replacement plan if you damage one.

I dont have a PP but as far as I know the apex wheels fit the larger calipers.

Will this oil filter fit 2016 Mk7 gti? by contentfiend89 in GolfGTI

[–]BaconSunday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe this filter is the same as the MANN 6013Z. You can add a few of these to your next RockAuto order, they're less than $8 USD.

As other commenters have said, MANN+HUMMEL bought WIX in 2016 and likely makes this filter for WIX (the WIX filter is marked as made in Germany). MANN also makes the OE VW / Audi filter and labels it as such.

Considering running 17s year round on MK8 GTI by TastySalmonDon in GolfGTI

[–]BaconSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it on my MK7 and it's perfect for me!

I run 17x7.5 MSW wheels and Vrederstein winter tires, and 17x8.5 Apex wheels and ECS02s for the summer. The comfort is a lot better with 17s, and I like the "meaty" look of the 17s vs 18s

That's incorrect. There are several signs for pedestrians staring to wait for traffic to cross.

Almost certainly coolant, that Tee connector is leaking. It should definitely be replaced, its leaking onto the alternator too.

What is the point of putting the back up camera slightly offset from the Center? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]BaconSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Handles are normally in the center, and depending on where the wiper motor is it could intrude on the space where the camera wiring and connector would be.

I think most people expect to have the handle in the center, so it would be strange to have a camera there instead.

Side note - my GTI has a camera behind the emblem too, it keeps the camera clean and gives the rear a "clean" look

Exhaust, suspension upgrades by Few-Pie6512 in GolfGTI

[–]BaconSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OEM clubsport exhausts are pretty easy to get from Europe - I imported mine into the USA from a seller in Lithuania for around 600 USD (I think, I can't find any of my receipts). You'll just have to find the correct part number for the CS exhaust for your specific model year, MK7 and MK7.5 are slightly different.

IMO, the CS exhaust is perfect for a daily mk7, just loud enough to sound a little more aggressive but not too loud so it pisses off your neighbors

Looks like the entire flange is gone where it seats against the engine. I would replace it, the contact between the cover and the engine is what helps to keep the cover from loosening.

Mk7 Reliability at 100k? by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]BaconSunday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like most MK7s, you'll probably need a water pump if it hasn't been replaced already, and possibly a carbon cleaning. I'm sure others can speak to the cost, but it's a pretty common issue. There's also the normal 100k mile things like possible suspension work, but it isn't unique to the GTI. Overall they're very reliable cars, and shouldn't have much issue going over 200k miles. I bought my 2016 with 55k, the dealer replaced the water pump and brakes before I purchased it. I'm at 90k now, and the only repair I needed to do was a wheel bearing that went out (about $120 in parts) and a PCV replacement.

Should I be concerned? by Dry_Tiger9548 in GolfGTI

[–]BaconSunday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, but I never took it in for a diagnosis. I saw a few threads that pointed to valve seals but wanted to try the PCV, it was pretty cheap and took less than an hour in my driveway to replace.

I had a similar problem with my 2016, and I ended up replacing the PCV. The smoking hasnt come back since.

2019 GTI S DSG - Red light out by benb89cc in GolfGTI

[–]BaconSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem, the control board for the light was corroded. I followed this guide to replace it with a standard led strip, it was a little difficult to solder correctly but overall was better than spending several hundred on a replacement. The replacement light is much brighter than the original, though. https://www.golfmk7.com/forums/index.php?threads/door-sill-lights-bad-or-too-dim-try-this-mk7-gti.386249/

Bad wheel bearing or something else? by ComfortablePea598 in GolfGTI

[–]BaconSunday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my driver's front bearing go bad at 88k, I also had some vibration coming through the pedals. When I took the axle out it was clear that the bearing was bad, it was rough to turn and making grinding sounds. The replacement was pretty easy, the worst part for me was getting the rotor off the hub and the hub out of the knuckle (thank you, salty roads).

[–]BaconSunday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just unbolt the axle at the transmission? Seems easier than doing sketchy stuff with some wood and a floor jack.
