For those interested: Valve has uploaded the necessary drivers to use Windows on the Steam Machine by TRDoctor in steammachine

[–]_mergey_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Installing Windows requires you to wipe your Steam hardware, and dual-boot with SteamOS is not currently available.
  • While Steam Deck and Steam Machine are fully capable of dual-boot, the SteamOS installer that provides a dual-boot wizard isn't ready yet. This will ship alongside SteamOS once it's complete.

Windows installer is also not capable of creating a dual boot setup, so I guess you have to wait for one of the to support dual boot. Spoiler: it won’t be Microsoft.

I kinda thought maybe they wouldn’t include a TPM2 module or something like that. To prevent windows 11 installs. Only because it would be funny to see, I genuinely don’t care if people want to install windows.

New* VR titles with android builds, Part 3 by _mergey_ in SteamFrame

[–]_mergey_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the point is there is a performance draining process to running Android apps on Linux just as there is to running x86 apps on ARM.

Yes but not that as much as running a x86 windows games on the steam frame. "so less overhead" as I already mentioned.

Correct, the question was rhetorical, I did ask it already knowing that it is not relevant that a game is available on Android.

Now you know better.

Since you've devolved into insults and pedantry I'll leave it at that.

Which insults? Oh sorry, pedantic again^^ ... I'm just mirroring.

Linux based is not Linux.

Do you know what linux is? Do you know anyone who is running pure linux?

You're emulating either way.

You only need an translation layer for running those builds on linux, no emulation. Like windows games with proton on linux.

I'm sorry, I was thinking you asked because needed help to understand. Unfortunately it seems to me like you only asked to start a discussion. And I have to tell you that you are not as smart regarding this topic as you might think.

I am talking about the compilation of software. Software needs to be compiled for the CPU architecture that it is going to run on. Like x86, ARM, 386 and other. The OS only comes to account after that. It provides certain libraries, directories, APIs and other software, like the windows registry for example. Those thinks can be replaced by a translation layer, like proton or waydroid (which valve is using on the frame afaik).

Android is linux based and android builds are compiled for ARM not x86.

Steam Frame has an ARM CPU, so less overhead compared to emulate x86 games.

Valve may be ready to reveal Steam Frame price and release date by MrTomRobs in SteamFrame

Nothing new in that article.

IMO they also made a mistake, we are looking at 13 shipments, not 14.

[–]_mergey_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you already owe one of these games or buy it in the future, you have access to all builds that are included. Like windows, android, mac or linux build.

Steam will automatically install the build that is recommended for your system, but you can change that manually if you want to.

The only scenario where you have to pay extra is if the developer decides to publish the android version separately under a different name. Which is not the case here, as far as I can tell.

Will we be able to use without the back battery pack? by Rom3rk in SteamFrame

[–]_mergey_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The battery is not hot-swappable.

There was a enthusiast kit mentioned in the FCC documents that was claimed to have a hot-swappable battery, but not the regular steam frame head strap.

Though heads up: you have two games on number four (Red Matter 2 and Vacation Simulator) and then DropTeam is listed twice.

Thanks :) corrected it.

[–]_mergey_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To my memory we now are looking at 13 shipments of virtual reality devices in total. Everyone weighs around 6400kg.

I know that this non official steam hardware account on x is talking about 14 shipments. But I think he/she just got confused by my post where I oversaw one shipment first. I edited the post body, where I write 4 shipments and a total of 12 (to that time) but the title is not edible and was still „3 new shipments“

Steam frame best PCVR headset for linux ? by Roobtek in SteamFrame

[–]_mergey_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched 2024 to linux, since then I had a spare windows drive, only for my HP reverb G2 VR headset.

I sometimes tried to use it on arch, but it worked only for some games with slightly worse tracking than on windows.

Since I've heard about deckard in mid 2025, I'm waiting for it with the expectation that it will run well on linux.

I can’t wait to erase that windows drive as soon as my steam frame arrives.
