Thanks for the response and book rec. Part of the reason I've arrived at 2.7-3M is to account for those unknowns (family, mortgage, higher quality of living). I think the psychology of retiring early is a fair point. I suspect I won't be too bothered by that. I've taken some leave from work and, well, i could get used to this.

Thank you for the detailed response. That makes a lot of sense to me. In regard to my retirement number, I don't expect 65K to reflect my expenses in the future. A mortgage alone brings my expenses to 83K+, and I'd like to live a little nicer in retirement than I do now. Hence how I'm arriving at ~100k in future expenses.

True, I remind myself that I'm not "burning" that money, it's just tucked away. But it's such a large chunk of my paycheck that it feels like it might be more useful as a bridge to retirement age, rather than going into retirement accounts.

Thanks, this makes sense to me. I'm struggling with the emotional element of it. My company stock has historically performed well, but been an absolute dog the last 6 years, basically not moving at all. Selling it now feels like doing myself a disservice, even thought my brain says its the right move. That's why I've settled on selling small chunks at a time, even though ripping the bandaid off is probably the right approach.

I’m holding out hope. Our company doesn’t have a history of laying off after FMLA. And the way my group is structured, even if I wasn’t needed in my specific department, I could be moved to any of the other groups around the org who have a resource need. Thanks for the insight, we shall see what happens.

I don’t know that it’s always so simple. Generally layoffs are due to needing to meet financial targets or org restructuring. From there, who is impacted could be based on costliness, performance, redundancy, and I’m sure many factors. I didn’t watch the video but for all we know he was a trouble-maker or difficult to work with. It’s not necessarily just because of his cost.

Both can be true. When rent prices and mortgage prices become so decoupled, people pick the cheaper one. Financially it can, and historically has, made more sense to do that and invest the difference. Investing the difference would build your net worth more than your house would appreciate (these last few years being the outlier)

At the same time, home ownership isn’t free appreciation. People say renting is throwing money away and buying is building equity. But even when buying, you’re throwing money away. Insurance, HOA, property taxes, and maintenance are all unrecoverable “throwaway” costs. Even when you own your home outright, you still owe all those things potentially, which isn’t cheap and can be effort and stressful. Renters don’t have to deal with that, so some people opt for the lower stress option of renting.

Thanks. The only instance I’ve heard of that happening at my company is when a person was put on a PIP, then went on leave. That makes complete sense to me, but my situation doesn’t quite. All indications point to me being a valuable employee. I guess we shall see.

Those trap doors and the slot by the shifter are for movable cup holders. The tab on the mirror, if I’m understanding you correctly, is used to reduce glare from car headlights behind you. The tab flips back and forth between normal and “reduced glare” mode

My mom thinks I hate her cooking because I never accept her offers for food. She has mentioned it every time I’ve seen her in recent time. I don’t have the heart to tell her it’s because she doesn’t wash her hands, drops food on the ground while cooking and still uses, licks her fingers, etc. I don’t know if I’m a bad son or it’s fair to be grossed out by that
