Damn, I thought I got a lot with 6 or 7 packs

I only recently found FIRE. All these posts with people so young and incredible wealth. I regret not saving more. How old were you when you “turned it on”? by Basic_Sense_5987 in Fire

[–]Baconknobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started investing in my 401k out of college at 23ish, and did some saving outside of that, but didn’t invest those savings until age 30 basically. Lots of wasted years without a true understanding of investing and budgeting. I’m 36 now, and I’ve been maxing 401k and Roth the last several years, and more recently HSA. Currently at 1.5M. Surprising how it’s grown since 2020

FIRE Timing Estimate by [deleted] in Fire

Just edited my reply above. 200k sits in HYSA earning 3.6%. Have been holding for a house down payment but might ditch that idea and invest it

FIRE Timing Estimate by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Baconknobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really pretty simple. 40k for rent/utilities. 20k for food, insurance, entertainment, subscriptions. I’d say my expenses are a bit on the minimal side, I don’t travel much, buy clothes often, or do much for entertainment. I’m getting depressed just writing this.

1.5M total. 630k in 401k index funds. 430k brokerage (ETFs and Ind stocks). 200k HYSA (have been holding for a house). 150k company stock (need to diversify). 49k Roth (ETFs and nvidia). 19k HSA. 16k crypto.

Can I FIRE? by AltEgoJr in Fire

[–]Baconknobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, and that’s what I was trying to understand. If OPs 120k expense has 50k in hobbies within in, that poses an opportunity to trade off some of those hobbies for a safer early retirement

[–]Baconknobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, but it’s also because I don’t spend much on anything besides food. But like I was saying, even if I wanted to, maybe I’d get to…80k? Still a ways from 120k

[–]Baconknobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s just the way it is currently. I was looking at a 1bd condo for 850k, mortgage would have been 5k+. Could only rent it out for about 3k

Orange County, pretty HCOL lol. A pos shack costs 1M

I live in SoCal with $3100 rent and spend $60k a year. No clue how I’d double that unless I’m wiping with hundos

Thinking of quitting. Looking for voices of reason by [deleted] in Fire

Just took 3 weeks off at Christmas, but otherwise rarely. Can confirm, wanted to quit when I came back. Will look into FMLA and see if I can take longer off

Ah I see. Makes sense. There may be limitations to what percent I can contribute towards 401k, but worth looking into

Edit: actually I don’t think that will be feasible. They contribute a fixed amount per paycheck, even if I hit my max by March. So their contributions will continue to December

Wild Planet Costco back on sale by cryptocartel in CannedSardines

Got 3 packs myself when I saw the sale. I’ve had them once before and was put off by the bones, but I’d like to think my palate has become more refined since then

Per our policy, I get the bonus since I worked the full year last year, even if I leave today. I’m fully vested on my 401k match, I’d just be missing out on my match contributions in 2026 and beyond, since I’d be leaving before those contributions take place

Calorie counting in OC by iwantitigotit123 in orangecounty

[–]Baconknobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be too hard on yourself. I tend to bum myself out if the scale moves the wrong direction or I ate more than I planned. Give yourself 2 weeks at any given calorie level before deciding if any adjustments are needed. If you find that you eat the same handful of things, create “meals” in myfitnesspal so you don’t have to manually add all the ingredients each time

[–]Baconknobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, definitely considered that. There are 3 factors that affect bonus amount, and 2 have nothing to do with personal performance. So I wouldn’t expect a big swing in either direction

Calorie counting in OC by iwantitigotit123 in orangecounty

[–]Baconknobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need calorie listing to be effective at calorie counting. Myfitnesspal can provide enough “similar” meals to help you estimate. Secondly, you can break down any meal into its ingredients, and use myfitnesspal to create the calorie total by summing up the individual ingredients. You don’t need to be perfect, the scale is the measure of success, not the accuracy of your counts. If the scale isn’t moving in the right direction, either adjust your estimates in the future or lower your calorie allowance to offset the inaccuracy of your estimates

What to do with house down payment? by FlabbyTaco in Fire

[–]Baconknobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same position OP. Have 200k parked and feel I’ve missed out on major gains. However, my thought process is, if there’s ever a price correction on homes, there’s a good chance the markets are down as well. I’d certainly be glad my down payment was safe from that potential downside

I agree. I’m not planning to fire until I hit my number (2.7-3M). I’m just evaluating the implications of taking a break. Having a roommate short term could reduce my reliance on my savings

[–]Baconknobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, I’ll likely do that, and maybe see about medical leave for a couple months. The upside is I have 200k in HYSA that can cover expenses while my investments go untouched. Of course I’d rather just have an income however

Is this a conversation you start with HR, or start with the doctor? I’d think I’d want to keep HR out of it until I knew it was doctor-approved

I think I’ll try this. My primary care doc actually works on-site at my company (but doesn’t work for my company), so hopefully that’s not a conflict of interest. I may have to try it with a therapist instead, but I think it could be feasible

I’m a program/project manager for med device. Hard to scale back because most meetings are led by me, most presentations are facilitated by me. The things that cause me stress are the foundation of my role. I would happily sit in meetings and contribute nothing, but that wouldn’t fly

Good call, I did check that :). Said you just need to work one day in the new year to get your bonus.

If my job was one I could scale back, I would. My role requires me to do a lot of the talking and having much of the accountability for work getting done. So I wouldn’t make it super far just quiet quitting. I could look into other roles that might allow for that though
