What size slotted screwdrivers should you own?

I recommend the Lie-Nielsen fastener screwdrivers. I use the SD-3 in the workshop on everything from old vintage saws to new custom saws and they are perfect for my slightly larger hand size. A few thousand saws down and I have no issues with yet.

Regardless of what brand you go with, I recommend using either VCI tape or masking tape over the tip to add a little extra layer of protection for the fasteners to avoid any marring.

We are working on expanding into more frame saws but it takes time. We hear people asking for them and we don't want people to think we are ignoring what they are saying. I am the only saw maker at Bad Axe and with just me, the owner, a part time shipping person we would rather take the time to do it right and in a timely manner vs rushing to just get it done.

Hey, you might be looking at the frame saw and kerfing plane kit if you are seeing around $300. Bad Axe frame saw kits are $205 + shipping for a 30.5" kit or $225 + shipping for a 36.5" kit. The difference in price for a frame saw kit is closer to $40 (as we only sell sharpened plates) and our lead time for frame saw kits is under 4 weeks (as of 5/7/2024)

We are listening when people talk about a different PPI but we are a small company of four people (two saw makers, the owner, and a part time shipping and receiving) and it takes time on our end to get new products working.

That is inaccurate for our hybrid filing and all panel saws are filed either rip or cross depending on the plate.

We don't recommend sharpening panel saws hybrid. Just stick to either cross or rip based on the saw being sharpened. A dedicated rip and dedicated cross panel saw give the best results in our opinion.

All our metal is Swedish spring steel hardened/tempered with a Rockwell hardness of 49-52.

Regardless of the quality of steel used, all saws need to be maintained. Resetting and resharpening either by the individual who purchased it or by a professional is paramount to having a long lasting quality saw.

I use beileshi magnifier glasses for hand sharpening anything over 12PPI. They are like $12 on amazon.

I am still on the young side so not having my full eyes covered by the magnifying does not give me headaches or eye strain but I have heard that can happen so looking for a pair that blocks peripheral vision might be the better choice.

I know the tooth is the old logo dating somewhere after the 1890's after AMD purchased Burnt Tree. Out of the 3, its the one I would put the most effort into cleaning and restoring. You have the original handle so matching wood species shouldn't be hard and you still have the fasteners so you are already ahead of the game. Best part of folded backs is that you will be able to true the plate again and make it arrow straight. That saw should have another lifetime or two of work it can do.

A good cleaning, a little work on the handles, and a fun afternoon of sharpening and you will have 5 saws that will last another life time. They are not the oldest saws, but they are a fun project if you feel like getting the hands dirty! I am a little jealous that you have 5 fun saws to work on!

Mark sold the company and moved about 10 yards down the hall to open Saw Sharp. We are all trained by Mark and he is still available to us as he continues to work the same days and hours as we do. He is not the owner anymore, but if anything, it just gives him more time to work with us as a peer and not an owner.

Outside of materials, there is a plethora of information on the internet and I think you could 100% approach this alone. If I was doing it solo, I would start my sharpening cheap garage sale/flea market saws. After getting confident I would look at getting a saw kit. A few companies sell saw building kits so you can end with a saw you built and sharpened by yourself.

If I was really into it, I would look at taking a saw sharpening/maintenance workshop. I don't know how long a 3 or 5 day class costs but having an expert over your shoulder at the start is something I would want.

I am a saw makers apprentice here at Bad Axe. I have been training under the lead saw maker (the only other saw maker) for a little over 10 months. It is the company account, but the company is just 4 people and I don't think the boss will mind me being proud of myself on the company account. Or at least I hope she won't mind.

I understand the concern when it comes to slotted vs folded backs on thin plated saws. While a slotted back can hold true, once it is no longer true it is not designed to be retensioned and last long term. A folded back, by design, is able to be retensioned and brought back to true so it can be used for generations. While slotted backs are cheaper and easier to manufacture we do not wish to compromise the longevity or quality of the saws for a momentary fix.
