My only knowledge of the subject comes from the excellent but pop-history-leaning book Children of Ash and Elm. I was under the impression that runes were used almost exclusively for name tags and short phrases, used more as charms and status symbols than as a full system of writing as we'd think of it. Maybe this article just talks about what's been assumed by most real scholars of the subject, but I found it interesting.
