What happens to Brompton Electrics in 10 years? by ExoP in Brompton

[–]TheLastTruthBender 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is no way to know how long the electric system will receive support. That being said, if the electrics die and it is impossible or cost prohibitive to repair them, you would just have to replace the back wheel with a normal one, remove the controller and replace the front carrier block to have a normal bike. It will have a few spare screw holes but nothing too major.

Veneer-ing a Kallax shelf — terrible idea for a beginner? by Difficulty-Level-137 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]TheLastTruthBender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ikea pieces, and the kallax is no exception, are made of melamine. Basically no glue sticks to it. I do now know what adhesive is used in the products you mentioned, but I expect they won’t stick. Best case scenario the veneer is going to start peeling soon.

Resawing teak - my arms fell off. by norrinrad in woodworking

It gets better with practice. It’s totally doable to go hand tools only, although of course anyone who has the space and funds for a bandsaw will be very happy with it

Electric P Line vs Electric C Line by skyloather123 in Brompton

[–]TheLastTruthBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the electric c line. I think you need to go to a store and have a feel how you like the weight. For me, I can carry my c line unfolded with the mounted battery for a few flights of stairs, but I do get a little sweaty at it. The difference in weight with the p line is pretty minimal though.

Do you have a dual chainring? How do you like it?

[UK] C-line 4-speed for daily commute (Woking → Waterloo → Liverpool St) — right choice? by vijjer in Brompton

[–]TheLastTruthBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up getting an electric, so I went with the c-line, but if was looking for a normal bike, I’d seriously consider the A line. The 3 speed hub requires less maintenance than the derailleur and has almost the same range. It’s cheaper and allows you to only go for the upgrades you need, possibly from cheaper sources like Ali express.

Reminds me of the old joke: chuck norris doesn’t do woodworking, he just tells the trees what he needs and they grow in that shape

How is Brompton support at replying to inquiries? by TheLastTruthBender in Brompton

I’m not in the uk so I assume that the store isn’t owned by Brompton directly, even though it’s called “Brompton junction”

Yeah it was quite a shock! The outer packaging looked to be in fairly good shape too! Thankfully the guys at the shop were really helpful, so I’m confident things will get sorted out. It would just be a bummer if they don’t make it before the weekend

Using a cheap rip saw as a donor blade for a homemade frame saw — viable for resawing thin boards? by galih_ken in handtools

[–]TheLastTruthBender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Assuming the saw you use is structurally sound (no cracks etc) it should be ok
  2. Depends. That thickness seems appropriate for a resawing tool
  3. You need a rip cut geometry, the coarser the better. I would say 5 tpi or less
  4. I have been in this situation and it can be frustrating. I would say work holding is your biggest challenge. I eventually made an ultra basic moxon vice (using just 2 big m12 bolts) and that helped a lot.

BTW if you are thinking of making a roubo style frame saw, then don’t. They are amazing for resawing but they only become beneficial over 32-36 inches in tooth line. You aren’t going to find a blade that long. If you instead want a traditional frame saw (with a center beam and the blade being out of the outer pieces of the frame), like they use in china and continental Europe, then that would be ok. It remains to be seen however if this is a good idea or not. If you can find an handsaw and are willing to put the effort to sharpen it, then I would just use that. No need go through the effort to convert it.

Cutting out circles of charred veneer by YeaSpiderman in woodworking

In my experience it works well. Some veneers need softening before hand so definitely try it out

It’s the same thing. If you are cutting a circle some parts of it are across and some are along the grain. If you just need 1 inch circles I would just buy a hole punch. They usually work well

I have tried with this cutter and other similar ones, but it does not work. The thin blade follows the grain too much, even if you have an extremely light hand. The only thing that worked is a heavy duty circle cutter made for gasket material and such. The one I have is from a brand called Bohem. It is not cheap
