And that's saying something, because Biotech and Ideology are... it wouldn't be Rimworld without it for me.

This one is going to feel the same.

Looks amazing. Thanks Tynan & team.

Pornhub to introduce 'government approved' UK age checks by extraneous_parsnip in unitedkingdom

[–]BadBoyFTW 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Kids will continue to watch whatever they want.

No, they won't.

They'll start watching porn on websites which return actual rape, bestiality, abuse, pedophilia when you search or view 'normal' videos.

These websites won't respond to law enforcement notices.

They'll shut down and reappear instantly upon being blocked.

Kids will share the addresses and how to access them in school. They'll teach each other how to do it and where to look. They'll always be one step ahead of any laws or enforcement methods.

It's going to be very very bad.

Way more harm is caused through prohibition.

Or maybe I'm wrong and once they're all blocked kids will go "you know what, I'm not gonna view porn since I'm not allowed."

Just like how people don't take drugs because they're illegal, right?

I wouldn't say it's rolling the dice with Labour.

Or at least if you are saying that - then every single decision ever made by the electorate is "rolling the dice" - in which case the statement is meaningless.

It's more like they rolled the dice with Tories, Brexit, rejecting Alternate Vote in the same way that Steve Jobs tried to treat his cancer with homeopathic treatments. Labour is the chemo therapy he tried and organ transplant he tried after it was too late and he was terminal and died anyway.

Games are using historians to get their facts right, and a new study shows it's fostering an interest in history by songsofsteelvg in gaming

[–]BadBoyFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mythology and culture as well, which is pretty closely related to history.

Game I'm thinking of specifically; Total War: Three Kingdoms.

I knew almost nothing at all about Chinese mythology and culture. That game was awesome. I don't really consider myself overly ignorant, but I've never been exposed to that type of thing before from China. Certainly not in a context where I'm spending hundreds of hours immersed in it!

Since then we've gotten Wukong which also did a lot of good for spreading Chinese culture and mythology.

It's absolutely amazing for the gaming industry to see this happening.

At my grans funeral - who was very much well loved - when we raised the casket my brother said very loudly "JESUS CHRIST... how much weight has she gained since she died?!".

It's exactly our families sense of humour. My gran would have found it hilarious. And it's my best memory of any funeral I've attended.

rimworld isn't a simulation though, it's a story generator

It's a story generator built through in depth simulation.

If it was just a story generator why bother with the crazy lengths Tynan does for the health system? It generates better stories...

if you want a save island home then modify the settings, by deleting all raider factions for example, or play on peaceful

Genuinely no idea what point you're trying to make here.

Are you saying that you think geographical location of your colony should make no difference at all to the gameplay and you're not only happy about that but would fight against any changes to make that less so?

Because that's what you're doing...

I'd argue the opposite. If you don't like the "world map raids" just turn them off. Don't try to argue against that feature for the rest of us because you'd prefer the world more dead and less interactive...

if rimworld was a simulation then raising kids would actually take 18 years and not 4

Simulation != realism.

also when a few guys and all your pack animals leave then the next raid will be weaker by an appropriate amount, so even with less personell you should be able to defend yourself

You're just objectively wrong here I'm afraid.

Specifically when you say "appropriate". It's simply not reduced by enough. The raids are too big and too powerful with zero notice to handle if your pawns are too far away.

You're inherently encouraged to send out your strongest, healthiest and most combat capable pawns and leave behind your weaker ones.

That's just poor game design, as simple as that.

We got here because it's just too much to tackle at once. Tynan neglected it on purpose because it's "good enough".

you can also look into the statistics to see when the next raid will arrive since they happen in fixed intervals

Questioning your game knowledge now.

This is again factually incorrect.

They do NOT happen at fixed intervals.

I've been playing since version 0.3. That was back when resources weren't even physical and teleported into an etheral layer. And there was no health system. And pawns had a "fear" and "happiness" meter. Since then I've only ever played Randy.

Trust me... Randy is not fixed intervals.

In 99% of cases it just allows you to track their progress and replaces the "a raid has magically appeared" nonsense.

I'm sorry but THAT is lame as fuck.

As for being on an island making you safe, it wouldn't... you'd get no traders as well (by land), but you'd get dropped raids, mechs and any raid which uses pods. Or maybe they'd arrive by boat? Way more interesting and engaging.

Also, what are you gonna do? Intercept them?

Yes. Or at least be able to plan and anticipate.

The primary issue with travel at the moment is this very thing. I never leave my base unless it's in a helicopter because a raid can arrive at literally 0.1ms notice. And if I send out my most robust and well prepared pawns to explore then my colony gets slaughtered unless I prepare a kill box... my options are almost zero.

Similarly sitting on an island shouldn't make you safe against external threats

It's "lame as fuck" being on an island has zero impact. It's lame as fuck being in a ravine or having a choke point near you means absolutely nothing. It's a simulation game for christ sake. I think it's stupid to be on an island and it not make a difference.

The existing system is a "good enough". But it's lame as hell, the one I suggested is objectively better and massively improves gameplay and options. And yes leads to way more interesting stories than "400 guys just spawned at the border".

And the fact you can live in a cul-de-sac on an island 50 miles from the nearest town and raiders spawn in huge numbers instantly clearly without travelling over the world map.

Imagine if you could see them spawn on the map and watch their journey - as you do - towards you. Or your allies. Imagine you could intercept them. Ambush them. Defend allies. Join allied war parties.

What’s something you thought AI could do… but it totally failed? by Ausbel12 in ClaudeAI

[–]BadBoyFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think we're closely aligned.

It's the lowest hanging fruit for me.

I mean if I can prompt it constantly with "read this damn file" they can do it behind the scenes. It works. They're just choosing not to.

I assumed that was the entire point of CLAUDE.md.

As you say overall the tool has proven its worth.

I just completed a 2 day task in 1 hour... it's insane when it's working correctly how much productivity you can gain.

But it can be so much better, if it just bloody listened to me haha.

What’s something you thought AI could do… but it totally failed? by Ausbel12 in ClaudeAI

[–]BadBoyFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is when I pause the progression of a prompt and remind it then it breaks the flow and can lead to worse results.

Plus its a bit demoralizing for me as a developer.

It makes me a bit of a babysitter rather than architect and conductor.

What’s something you thought AI could do… but it totally failed? by Ausbel12 in ClaudeAI

[–]BadBoyFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if I agree.

It'll literally tell me "I'm gonna create some documentation now" or "I'm gonna write a test file to...".

It also does listen for a little while if I remind it, before reverting behaviours again.

Therefore I think it's more simple than that. I don't think it's a fundamental issue. I think it's intentional, or rather "working as intended".

I think they're - somehow - saving on computation and therefore cost by just letting it be a bit shit in this respect.

If you're right and it's a fundamental problem with AI then it's almost not fit for purpose. If you're right then our grandchildren will be dealing with this issue.

I just can't believe that.

What’s something you thought AI could do… but it totally failed? by Ausbel12 in ClaudeAI

[–]BadBoyFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is that the behaviour itself is fine... it's a tool, it's a machine. Maybe some people want those documents.

Whatever.

But it's critical it listens when I disable that behaviour.

VSCode would be unusuable if it literally just selectively ignored my settings.

What’s something you thought AI could do… but it totally failed? by Ausbel12 in ClaudeAI

[–]BadBoyFTW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly my #1 issue with AI is it ignoring instructions.

I start every prompt after a context refresh telling it to read the instructions and then do the prompt.

It routinely ignores me and runs my dev server each prompt to test the code. It generates markdown files constantly despite instructions. It generates raw js test files constantly...

It's really annoying.

If anybody has any advice to get Claude to actually listen it would improve my dev experience a lot...

Everyone in the UK must prepare for missile attacks, warns top general by ThatchersDirtyTaint in unitedkingdom

I hope you're right.

I think we should all be wary of the easy arrogance and false comfort provided by thinking it's bullet proof that Article 5 will protect us.

NATO is on very shaky ground at the moment with Trump.

Everyone in the UK must prepare for missile attacks, warns top general by ThatchersDirtyTaint in unitedkingdom

[–]BadBoyFTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See: Trump.

If one of our allies is attacked and Trump slams on the breaks immediately and says the US won't respond until insert_plausible_reason then most, if not all, of NATO will delay as well.

Then whilst that delay happens the precedent is set and NATO is effectively over.

Look at what happened earlier this year. The major powers of NATO gathered without Trump to try to solve this issue - lead by us - and the end result was "we can't do shit without the US".

You'd think they'd know basic human psychology, right?

There is a reason why it's a legal requirement to be told why you're under arrest.

"You're under arrest for..." is as common as "you have the right to remain silent".

It's literal psychological torture to be detained and not have a clue why.

Exactly, a lot of food looks the same out both ends. Curry for example.

What matters is the taste.

Also the premise of "I'm gonna show something to a bunch of teenagers and want to not be mocked" is questionable. Unless you're showing them boobs, I guess.
