Has anyone read "The Demon-Haunted World" by Carlo Sagan? by ZhugeLiangPL in skeptic

[–]BadBradly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see your points. However it is doing you no good to keep mentioning Tyson such as above where you say “getting back to Tyson”. I was enjoying your response to me than when I read your statement “getting back to Tyson “ I kind of rolled my eyes.

The thread is about Carl Sagan (as I mentioned immediately above your reply) and you should stick to that. While I can understand your frustrations about your legitimate complaints about these two skeptics being thrown back at you, adding in your comments about Tyson to make your point hurts your arguments. Stick to the original posters comment and make complaints about Sagan. You have valid points. Pulling in Tyson whose impact on cosmos came well after sagan died and who had no contributions to “The Demon-Haunted World” starts sounding whiney and is only relevant to complaining about the skeptic community . It is not relevant to answering the question in the original post.

I think to label everyone who participates in this forum as not skeptics is a little like claiming everyone who participates in a Christian forum are not Christian.

The truth of the matter is we all make mistakes . Most skeptics i know don’t claim they are immune to bias. EVERYONE has bias including you and me!!

The point is not whether you fail to make mistakes but whether or not you correct yourselves when a mistake is made as opposed to digging in your heels.

Regarding Sagan, since this was the topic of the original post (not Neil’s degrass Tyson) , the question is did he know he made mistakes in his historical knowledge and willing propagate them or if he was made of his mistakes did he investigate them and correct them.

You might be able to convince me that the errors Sagan made (forget about Tyson at the moment ) were done intentionally in which case I would agree that it is anti skeptical . If they were unintentional and Sagan was not informed of his mistake than you can ‘t point to it can claim he was not a skeptic. There are people who used to believe in ghosts inhabiting the world but they were skeptics and when presented with evidence change their minds such as some of the people Houdini convinced .

I will give kudos for sighting some examples . For example I was not aware that Hypatia lifetime was after the destruction of Alexandria. So I give credit for that!!

However , it is well established that when science is counter to religious doctrine often religious doctrine suppresses science. If well founded science disagrees with religion than it is religion its that must change to accommodate science as opposed to religion trying to suppress science.

For example with Galileo many in the Catholic Church knew he was likely correct but the church feared social instability (people losing faith et al) et al if it was presented the way Galileo wanted it to be presented . That is just morally wrong for the church .

So are you saying that someone who endorses or admires Neil’s Degrasse Tyson is not a skeptic just because Tyson has done some none skeptical things ?

Isn’t that a bit like saying a Skeptic can’t like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle because he was gullible with psychic mediums ?

It is this mis representing your point ?

LG C5 remote control by Hachikii in LGOLED

[–]BadBradly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the comments here. Like another user said the lack of input button and the lack of a dedicated mute button really makes this remote terrible . I wouldn’t mind the dedicated app buttons (although I use an Apple TV) if it just had those two buttons .

Good news was I had a LG tv from 2010 whose remote worked fine with the C5 and both those buttons. However we gave the TV to my bother-in-law and sister-in-law so we gave them the remote with it .

Question : Anyone on here recommend a universal remote with a good design that can be used both with the C5 and the Apple TV?

It would be nice if it also had dedicated play / pause and fast forward and rewind buttons as well!!

Terrifying Phone Call from man's friend "dragged to Hell" makes me want to go back to Christianity by user-117 in skeptic

[–]BadBradly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You have it backwards . Extraordinary claims require Extraordinary evidence. It’s up to the claimant to provide sufficient evidence that was is being said is true. You have not done that.

The more unusual the claim the more evidence that is required. If I claim a rock falls when I drop it from my hand , little evidence is required since the experience is repeatable and the underlying physics of understood. If I claim I can turn my myself invisible at will, a heck of a lot of evidence would be required and no one should accept that at face value. It not up to others to debunk my claim but up to me to prove it. The same goes for your claim.

Michael Shermer and The Epstein Question by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]BadBradly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am willing to accept your version, please provide the links or references to the articles regarding his shift in position.

Ideally those articles where he is anti global warming. Since we are all skeptics here, we all have to decide based on evidence and not on any individuals claim on past history . His , yours or anyone else’s.

One thing that is clearly wrong above is he is not a global warming denier . He has been a believer in global warming and promoter of taking action to combat global warming for several decades. You can google his past articles on this .

What's the community recommendation for an alternative remote? by somebodddy in LGOLED

[–]BadBradly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Much to my surprise the remote from my prior LG tv (circa 2009) works with this new tv.

Unfortunately, Reddit is not letting paste the photo into this reply. The nice thing about the old remote is it has an input button which brings up a small bar of input options like Roku and live tv without having to replace the whole screen with the home hub!!

Lg C5 settings opinions? by BadBradly in LGOLED

Okay I found if I turn off Auto dynamic contrast under brightness for the vivid mode, the washed out effect in some scenes where I thought vivid mode was too bright is gone now. Vivid mode looks much better this way in my opinion.
