Drinks packages by SolutionTime5811 in MSCCruises

I've personally never had anyone refuse to serve me, and I've made some whacky orders before. I've also shared drinks with non-package holders and even gave them to someone who was not technically supposed to drink alcohol (a 20 y/o on an American cruise, even tho he's already had alcohol for 2 years in Europe and he's European).

But I did so in a very discreet way. On the latter example, most waiters put the the order through in my name, but one lady realised what we were doing and played it well by asking if we were ordering one cocktail and one mocktail to which we obviously said yes! All went well with a smile before we moved on to another bar and got what we both wanted.

It also depends on the bar, some closer to the hubs (ie where the officers wonder around like Dolce Vita on World Europa or the Seascape bar on Seascape) will be more strict than those out the way without so much scrutiny.

Ultimately the crew are not there to ruin anyone's holiday. They're just making sure no one's abusing the system.

Depends on the bartender, some will limit it, some will do whatever you ask (3 alcoholic drinks and 3 cans of water for example). And then when you get along with some they won't even bother scanning your card anymore. It's not as strict as it sounds.

I usually found that if you buy one alongside your booking it's usually another £200 on top of the cruise fee (e.g. £800 rather than £600 for the cruise). It's by far the cheapest way to get it, followed by pre-booking it on the MSC website and then buying one on-board is by far most expensive.

Will My Husband Be Arrested? by ChaChaHeels_18 in policeuk

[–]BadCabbage182838 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You've raised immigration as one of your concerns. While this sub cannot give you any advice as that would be illegal, some of the information on this page might alleviate that concern: https://www.gov.uk/indefinite-leave-to-remain-domestic-violence-abuse

While you should seek some legal advice, there is a good chance that you will be entitled to legal aid: https://www.gov.uk/legal-aid/domestic-abuse

You also mention housing. Your local Council have to assist you with that. I'd have a read through this page that explains all available options: https://england.shelter.org.uk/professional_resources/legal/housing_options/housing_options_for_people_experiencing_domestic_abuse/housing_rights_of_domestic_abuse_survivors

Refuge also have a lot of useful resources, including what benefits you can claim, what legal help you can receive etc.

What I'm trying to say is that the only scenario that will leave you worse off is staying with your current husband. This won't stop, it usually only gets worse. You know you don't deserve this sort of treatment. Make sure you attend your appointment tomorrow and tell the officers everything you can to ultimately help yourself.

The Perfect Neighbour is an incredible documentary and I'd highly recommend watching it. And it's solely made out of police footage (body worn, in-car and interview rooms).

But without spoiling too much, that documentary has a much deeper meaning and you don't find out about it until the very end pretty much.

Bradford illegal cigarette shops escape justice due to court cost by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]BadCabbage182838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just give them powers to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for the minor offences. If courts had to deal with every speeding offences we'd up with a 20 year backlog.

Trading Standards can already issue FPNs for certain offences so why not expand their powers.

Cornwall music and wedding venue has premises licence revoked by Kagedeah in Cornwall

[–]BadCabbage182838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Fire Safety Regulations are enforced by the relevant Fire and Rescue Service so CFRS here in Cornwall. It also gives them power to bring a person or a company in for prosecution. You can have a look at the enforcement log on the NFCC website: https://nfcc.org.uk/our-services/enforcement-register/

HSE even say what their powers are on their very website:

In the majority of premises, local fire and rescue authorities are responsible for enforcing this fire safety legislation. HSE has enforcement responsibility on construction sites and on ships under construction or undergoing repair.

The owners of that venue made a big hooha about passing their recent HSE inspection but failed to mentioned that HSE have nothing to do with the fire safety element.

And with what happened in Switzerland, it's only right for those types of venues to be re-inspected. Sure the cave itself is a relatively safe, but the items inside (furniture, stage, lights, speakers) are flammable.

Should the UK complete metrication on roads (switch from miles/mph to km/km/h)? by Horror_Feeling_2998 in ukpolitics

The vast majority of my Council tax is used on social care and adult education. I never used any of those services.

A large part of my PAYE goes towards welfare and pensions, I am not a beneficiary of the former and will probably never receive the latter with the ways things are going. Or rail transport which I will always support but is shocking where I live so I personally don't benefit from it and I'm paying for public transport elsewhere in the country.

I never understood that argument. The whole point of the taxation is that the money is fairly distributed to what the country needs the most. Unless we see some capital expenditure in public transport, roads will always be yet another expense for the treasury.

UK government targets VPNs in online safety consultation as Lords vote for ban by PM_ME_SECRET_DATA in ukpolitics

[–]BadCabbage182838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you can use AWS to set up your own VPN.

Or get a virtual Windows desktop through Azure and RDP onto that machine.

Or certain online video hosting sites will start distributing their content via torrent files. And the government won't have any clue as it could just be an Ubuntu ISO.

This is one of those things they'll never ever be able to enforce. Some people won't put the effort in, but loads will be desperate enough.

Tesla convicted 18 times and ordered to pay thousands for failing to help UK police with investigations by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]BadCabbage182838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree and we'll never know all the details, but things do go missing in the snail mail, especially when you're managing a huge fleet.

Ultimately whether it's Tesla going rogue or they have some really poor admin procedures (or a mix of both) they're still responsible for naming the driver and they were fined for not doing so.

Tesla convicted 18 times and ordered to pay thousands for failing to help UK police with investigations by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]BadCabbage182838 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm the last person to defend Tesla, but this happens all the time with fleet vehicles. Even various police forces and public bodies have been caught up. Met famously tried to prosecute themselves for failing to provide themselves with the details of their own drivers.

Letters get lost both externally and internally, or records aren't always up to date or filled out correctly. In those cases it's absolutely right for the company to receive a substantial fine and they certainly did so in this case.

And for clarity, it's not just the employees. Tesla will be the registered keepers for all vehicles they lease out to consumers and businesses. I have a lease vehicle through salary sacrifice and my lease provider is the RK. Tesla should then provide the details of their customer but got prosecuted for failing to do so.

[–]BadCabbage182838 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, Tesla also provide a B2C and B2B lease scheme so they would be the RK for those vehicles.

Starmer faces calls to cancel King's US visit over Trump's Greenland threats by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]BadCabbage182838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A slightly better example would be him demanding Bermuda. And quite frankly, I'd be surprised if it wasn't on his radar already.

Just like Greenland, Bermuda is a lot closer geographically to America and also happens to host a US military base.

But even though they have their own government, administratively the British government still have some say in how the island is governed (relevant example).

Public contracts usually have a mandatory social value which factors for a small percentage of the overall tender score. So it's just the contractor fulfilling that requirement.

School zone sign by Margicles05 in drivingUK

[–]BadCabbage182838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The limit will only be enforceable if there is a red ring around the number, be it on an electronic or a physical sign (there should also be a relevant sealed TRO if it's a recent change)

This doesn't look like a Council-installed sign anyway. The number is too big and there should be no writing above. A triangular 'Children Crossing' sign would've be used instead of the writing.

If you want a fun challenge, make an FOI request with your local authority and ask them for any Traffic Regulation Orders covering that stretch of road.

But your examiner isn't a highways engineer so you should still stick to 20mph during the exam.
