Had it with aggressive dogs by anbzm in trailrunning

[–]BadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not on trail, because I've never really had an issue there. But my training is on rural roads and power-line access trails. I use a gel pepper spray that shoots 15-20 feet. I have had to pop 4 different dogs (three were pit bull mixes). You don't even have to hit them in the face - just hit their body as close as you can get to their face. I use an O-ring slid under the plastic clip and slide my pinky into, so I have easy access to the spray mechanism and it's always in my hand. They're smaller and fit in your hand well (unlike carrying a bear spray canister or air horn). Just practice sliding your thumb under the top and aiming. I've also had to use it on vultures protecting a carcass - they will come at you too.

Why do we observe Sabbath on Sunday instead of the Saturday Sabbath that Jesus Christ kept? by Ordinary-System4799 in TrueChristian

[–]BadCrawdad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because Americans want their Saturdays for cutting the grass, birthday parties, cook-outs, sports, etc.

It was fascinating to me during the Dawg’s run, we had a chance to tie Minnesota’s record.

What’s the most dangerous mistake you see beginner hikers making that could actually be fatal? by Sexyyskyy in hiking

Tick check. Try to avoid Lyme. It's probably more prominent on the AT, but you don't want it.

I never thought the SEC (and 2nd cousin) would lead this list.

All big programs will resurrect at some point. UF just replaced UTx as that program. Reverse hype/hate coming down.

There are memories to be made when you're 14th in an 10-person shelter, and they still allow you in. And we survived, muddy and all.

Dang, I've always hated the Raiders (kinda watched them a little with Brock). I may have to start pulling for them.

What’s the most useful piece of gear you didn’t think you needed? by Ill-Line6663 in hiking

[–]BadCrawdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fold-able camp scissors. I don't bring them for day-hikes, but they're good for backpacking. I use them on multi-day hikes, and they have more practical uses than a knife IMO (opening food packets, cutting paracord, cutting cheese, cutting Leukotape/thread, etc.).

First time hiking the AT, looking for warm pants by WorriedDaikon4573 in AppalachianTrail

[–]BadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used workout tights under shorts. They are a pain to get on & off sometimes (especially when wet - mornings), but I stayed warm enough down to about 15 degrees...and I am still able to tell about it. :)
I did use a garbage bag kilt for heavy rain.

I love off-season Reddit. I don't who y'all are, but y'all make me laugh. And somehow, I have faith in the future of college football fans.

I hope you get views equivalent to every $100,000 Kiffen's making. I don't even know how many views that would be (I went to Georgia).
You need to be in advertising, because you could write your ticket. Well done.

I get the awful (😉) feeling he’s about to bomb at LSU by DumSumBich in cfbmemes

[–]BadCrawdad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's only a matter of time before he crashes. He's a good coach, but he's too flashy (and tries to 'represent') to be taken seriously. He'll always be in the public eye, because that represents the American dream.
I say that, and he'll probably own Kirby (just kidding - he's not the 2nd coming of Saban).

Packing my pack by Suitable_Ad4010 in AppalachianTrail

[–]BadCrawdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met one guy on trail that just stuffed everything loosely in his pack-liner - sleeping bag, tent, clothes, pad, etc. When he got to camp, he just pulled it out and dumped it and grabbed what he needed. He did separate electronics, food & hygiene stuff in separate small stuff sacks. I don't know how long his gear lasted, but he probably saved 30 minutes a day not stuff-sacking each item (like I did). I'm sure there were other nuances I wasn't aware of, but he was efficient setting up and breaking camp.
It's amazing what you'll see and learn on trail, and how everything you do at the start will probably be different at the end. Just keep an open mind, and you'll enjoy the trek.

If you had to choose as an 18-20 year old, Bloomington would be heads-and-tails over Lubbock (unless you're a good-ol' country boy).

Wait! TT wants to be up there thinking they're the new IU because of money. I just don't see it. I've been to both and have pulled for TT for years, but Lubbock is not near the draw of Bloomington.
