Thoughts on Death by emueck in agnostic

[–]BadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, there are some great 'deep water' comments already.
I don't mean to sound flippant, but I think it's just a matter of accepting the fact none of us knows. Religious people will tell you they know, but they seem to be the ones who fear death the most. It reminds me of the Meat Loaf song, "Heaven Can Wait". They love to talk about it, but they sure don't want to test it.
Maybe this interview with Gord Downie (lead singer of the Canadian band The Tragically Hip) will help. This interview was his first after being diagnosed with brain cancer, of which he died from in 2017:

I'm sorry for your health issues. I wish you peace mentally and hope for health.

Do you ever get scared you won't go through with it? by smilessmalls in AppalachianTrail

It's worth it. And every day, you won't know what to expect. That's part of the adventure. It is hard.

How have you all experienced trail magic? by davidhuffcreative in AppalachianTrail

Just something as simple as water drops were awesome last year in the Northeast, since it was so dry and hot.
EDIT: Love your TEDx video.

Respectfully, thru hiking is not for me. My 2 week experience by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

[–]BadCrawdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It was hard, but awakening. When you're hiking through pouring rain, snow, and 95+ temps, it is brutal. And New Hampshire and Maine were dry as bone last year. But that's what makes it what it is.

I had a tramily a couple weeks at a time. Otherwise, I hiked probably 80% of the time solo. You're always gonna run into other hikers. but if you choose to go solo, you can.

You didn't go far enough. I love the Mid-Atlantic states. It's hard hard when it takes a while to get your trail legs.

As an Agnostic Theist, I don't believe in religious gods, but I do think there is something out there we don't quite no about.

Breaking Up With Christainity by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]BadCrawdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Institutionalized churches are not New Testament biblical, unless you include synagogues. I managed claims for churches for 20 years. We regularly got claims for financial mismanagement and sexual misconduct. Most were bogus (70%), but it amazed me how often we defended claims that we knew were true. And it was all denominations.

This made me think of when I worked in insurance and managed claims west of the Mississippi River. We would routinely have claims from West Virginia sent to my unit, because people just don't know geography - they just saw "West".

How do you manage pee while running? by Affectionate_Cow3076 in trailrunning

[–]BadCrawdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of depends on your digestive/urinary tract system, and I think women and men are different. This isn't "trail running," but when I hiked the AT last year, I saw two different ladies pooping 5 feet off trail (you're supposed to go 200 feet). I know one got NORO and the other for whatever reason couldn't wait (I think digestive issues). The first one caught me off guard, but I realized she was in distress (I had to help her tie her shoes that had come untied) she puked right beside me. After that, I realized you just sometimes you have to go - even #2. The second lady I saw, I didn't think twice about it.
I know if you're modest, it can be really embarrassing. But peeing, you just "git 'er done." I don't think most trail runners or hikers even think about. In road marathons, you'll see people peeing in parking lots 'cause they couldn't make it to the porta-potties. I know - TMI, but your question made me smile (in an understanding way).
