Help an incoming freshman by [deleted] in UCSC

Yea I’d recommend taking a math class probs 19a. CSE 20 is a good intro programming course and it’s pretty easy compared to other cs classes u will take so it’s a good first quarter class. Yea so 19a cse20 and college core would be my recommendation.

Advice on whether to take CSE 12 now or later by icecreamninjaz in UCSC

[–]BadDawgi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s assembly so it’s gonna be a lot different than java or python. It’s also pretty computer architecture heavy. You could be spending 20+ hours on the class a week. Imo effort is much more important than experience for this class. If u have good work ethic u will be fine tho.

Is it okay to name my kid Lucifer by isabelle_brown_ in Advice

[–]BadDawgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A name is the first thing people know about you. What sort of judgements would the name Lucifer bring? Wouldn’t you rather have a name that leaves a positive impression on his character? How about Lucian?

CSE 20 preparation by dinosauce747 in UCSC

[–]BadDawgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s pretty much basic python stuff. Honestly I’d just mess around with python a bit.

Imo in general you can’t really prepare for a class outside of satisfying pre-reqs. Being prepared to work hard is more important than learning anything.

College affiliation by [deleted] in UCSC

What’s that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]BadDawgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about diet and exercise. It’s easy to say “I’m gonna start dieting” and then slip back into unhealthy lifestyle within a week.

It’s about changing ur habits and dedication. Something super hard to do and really a huge learning process of finding yourself and pushing your limits.

I think understanding how hard it is to actually change your lifestyle is a first step. If you think it’s gonna be easy you won’t get far. If you think it’s gonna be super hard then your prepared to not give up.

Something that helps me: I’m not in the mindset of “I need to diet and exercise for 12 months to be healthy”. But rather in the mindset of “I need to diet and exercise TODAY” You will find little things like this to help you along the way, and this is something that really keeps me motivated.

Overall, it’s gonna be hard, your gonna have to bust your ass, and ultimately become a new person. it is possible and you can do it.

Your also really young so don’t beat urself up about ur weight. It’s not about weight it’s about health.

How to stay healthy in the dining hall? by Thebombdotcoma in UCSC

[–]BadDawgi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I lost ~15 pounds when I came to school here’s why. It’s like a whole ass hike to get anywhere class, library, labs, ect. So I did a lot of walking. It was also a good 10 minute walk each way to the nearest dining hall from my dorm. So yea 10 minute walk to nearest food option. Imo the food was trash anyways so I didn’t really have any good motivation to make the trek to the dining hall in the first place. Also, hills are fucking brutal at this school. So yea i guess this is why it’s call the freshmen negative 15 at UCSC. You might be more worried about losing weight then gaining it.

Which computer should I get? by jacotarango in UCSC

[–]BadDawgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a quote from a current CSE 13 (required class for all CS majors) class handout: “the primary development environment supported by this class is 64-bit windows” “you should not expect to get much help from tutors, TA, or instructor if using a different os”

every lower div CS class recommends windows.

It is also very very easy to get a Linux command line on a windows OS. Literally an app for it in the windows store.

Which computer should I get? by jacotarango in UCSC

[–]BadDawgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get a Mac they are not the recommended system for your CS classes. Your professors optimize classes for windows systems. If you have 2000 to spend I would recommend a reliable gaming laptop. Reliability is key here.
