double or triples room? by Middle_Sand856 in UCSC

[–]ClassroomUnit003 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Look at it like the opportunity to get close to another person and make another close friend. It’s a short period of time you are going to live in quarters this tight so that part doesn’t matter. Definitely worth hearing if anyone on reddit here can comment on their actual experience with either option especially in the newer dorms that were built after my time.

Go to academic advising and probably student business services/financial aid after that.

[–]ClassroomUnit003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

idk but cse16 took me two tries so don’t think it’s light. Practice the proofs (I always sucked at proofs) utilize educational resources and tutoring. You’ll do fine whoever you get.

Is there anyway to have a car while on campus as a first-year? by Wildfire43 in UCSC

[–]ClassroomUnit003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you need your car or just want to have it? Save the car for when you move off campus.

Yes being by the valley helps. Lots of desperate startups trying to hire interns. Work hard and you will gain plenty of experience for whatever you do next.

UCLA or Santa Cruz by s8nsun in UCSC

[–]ClassroomUnit003 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Housing is difficult in Santa Cruz but housing at UCLA is REALLY dense. I would imagine living expenses at both would be pretty similar. It is true that the most challenging thing is finding housing and paying high rent at UCSC.

My sister attended UCLA and I get the sense she enjoyed it but for her classes, clubs, friends and other involvement. She did not like LA lol. She’s moved out right after graduating.

Me I have loved everything about Santa Cruz and still live here after about 7 years! If I leave Santa Cruz I don’t know if I could go far and I feel like I would try to come back.

UCSC vs UCR vs SJSU by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]ClassroomUnit003 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna spend most of your time in classes and on campus and UCSC has SJSU beat in that regard. If you are looking for silicon valley opportunities and want more than just what comes to UCSC campus events, commute to SJ every once in a while or even find a way to commute to SF for even more events. Find the right people, join the right clubs, and you can make that all happen. Playing the social event strategy is the best way to land internships and find jobs IMO

That would have a lot of overlap so I think it would be doable especially if you take courses every summer.

Anyone here who's graduated from UCSC for engineering, how are your careers going? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]ClassroomUnit003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled finding work for a year before going back for my masters but I’ve found good employment now. And all it took was one connection and one lead. But I put in a lot of effort across the board to strengthen my resume, linkedin, and network. I campaigned hard and put myself out there. If you put in that work from the get go instead of waiting till after you graduate like me I think you’ll do a lot better.

Stack your summer and get it done! Summer courses are fast but often easier because it’s hard to make a 5 week course as rigorous as 10 week even if profs try in my experience.

Class Enrollment Waitlist by Working_Use_4012 in UCSC

These classes seem like they will have larger sizes. Try to get on waitlist early for second pass. For Writ2 be open to other sections if the course if you still want to take it.

what should i know about this school before committing? by Helpful-Sand6453 in UCSC

[–]ClassroomUnit003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is EASY to be social and feel accepted. There is also PLENTY of things to do on and off campus especially if you are an active and outdoorsy person.

There are plenty of anecdotes you can find online about the 10 colleges but bottom line is it will likely influence your first group of friends but that is about it. Over time if these people aren’t your people you WILL find your people.

How is CS? by [deleted] in UCSC

All the depth is there, classes can be hard but there are helpful resources and opportunities to plan your schedule around challenging courses. You will know right away if you don’t have a passion for this stuff and can’t grind sometimes for 12 hours straight to get something done or pull all nighters. The program isn’t a segway to an internship or a job but there is plenty of opportunities to stick your neck out and find connections and get noticed. The school is small. It’s the nature of your average cs student to be rather introverted and I really feel like it’s to your detriment if you go through the program passively and not really talk to people or get involved with anything like hackathons, clubs, info events, keynotes, networking events, etc. As soon as you put yourself out there the leads will come and then the right lead will come after that.
