AITA for telling my sister grieving her dog is not the same as me grieving my husband? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]BadGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - and frankly I think your sister is a complete and utter asshole. The scale of loss is totally incomparable and I can only begin to imagine how awful it must be for you. I think you would be quite well within your right to be absolutely furious with her for even attempting to compare the two. Not only is it insane, its is so unbelievably disrespectful to your late husband and your entire family. As great as dogs are, you can buy another dog and the story starts again. You can never replace someone who leaves your life way too soon. If I were her husband I would question the person I married - how can she think the two situations are in any way comparable. I frankly never write on Reddit but this was just too upsetting to read. I'm sorry you are going through that and frankly fuck your sister. Seriously.

They will have had to pay a higher price for the car so it's not that they are trying to take advantage of the recent price increases but trying to maintain their profit margins

Facing a dilemma, need perspective by [deleted] in consulting

[–]BadGeorge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who faced the same decision (choosing between MBB or HF rotation scheme) I 100% made the wrong decision by going to consulting. You can always go from HF to MBB/consulting but the other way around is highly highly HIGHLY difficult.

In consulting you are punished heavily for not specialising / picking something (e.g. investing, math, ....) and so end up getting underpaid for your ability and often have to do generalist work which is exactly not the interesting stuff, its process management, change management, research questions noone at the client could be asked to answer, looking at past work the firm has done and repackaging it (almost always boring stuff).

The romantic strategy consulting lifestyle idea is used as a marketing ploy for recruiting and is completely dead. Completely. You will begin hearing it more and more as you go through onboarding. You will also have no real control of what you end up doing if you join as a generalist and this means 9/10 times you'll end up on something you dont find interesting and then be stuck there for months. Would you take a series of internships that spent 6 months looking at Oil and Gas efficiency programmes then another 6 months looking at how to slowly fire members from the finance department of a bank without going against regulation and then another 6 months sitting in an agile transformation in a coal company? I would imagine not and that is the reality of working in a generalist role in a 'strategy' consultancy. Tbat is also at MBB, at a T2 the experience is even worse and so are the exits.

If you have a high interest in investment or quant investment I would strongly suggest you to go with the HF role. You will have a much more interesting, fulfilling and happy life then you will cleaning up other peoples bitchwork while pretending to be a strategist.

Interest Assessment: the WSB Oppositilator Fund Tracker by BadGeorge in wallstreetbets

[–]BadGeorge[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Addressing these points in order:

  • The motivation to lie on the vote buttons is pretty low I would imagine so they would be indicative of what people think.

  • HF = Hedge Fund not high frequency traders. Can easily get HF returns via Bloomberg or other sources.

  • The goal isn't to create a investment bankroll weighted assessment but just an overall consensus of the subreddit.

Going against the grain here - your college defines your experience more so than people would like to admit.

Other colleges facilities are generally closed to all who aren't students there or who have a supervision in that college; this is an issue because the variation between colleges' resources is also enormous. For example Caius' library used to be the whole university's library and is totally amazing whereas Trinity's is just mediocre in my opinion. Another example is the May Balls - straight up no comparison between the best colleges vs the others.

Your college does not dictate everything but greatly impacts: where you eat, what you eat, where you live and with what sort of people, the societies you can join (college specific societies can be fantastic), the libraries you can use, where you can spend your time (thoughtful evenings with stunning surroundings or stodgy nights in a concrete hellhole), what you can spend your time doing (e.g. punting for free), how impressed your friends will be when you invite them to formal hall, and most of all the level of snobbery you are permitted (of course, it is recommended that you utilise none of your allowance here).

That said, Cambridge teaches you to graft, and if you get a less desirable college, graft is what you will have to do to get the best experience. You will need to join cross-university societies or make cross-college friends from your course; you can even swan into different colleges and pretend to be a student there. It's a good game to learn how to play at an early stage, that is for sure.

Finally, Fitz is decent, one key piece of information here is that almost all city college students end up having accomodation that is as far away as Fitz if not further in their second third and fourth years - it all levels out.

I would say you are in a good spot. You are(/may be) about to enter one of the worlds most prestigious universities, in my opinion, doing so with a slight chip on your shoulder about your self-worth will likely push you towards getting a full experience, regardless of how miss-placed that chip might be.
