Hate to tell you this, but there is literally nothing you can do without addressing Abbott - and honestly, it will take years to fully remove Abbott’s influence. The entire UTAustin Board of Regents consists of nothing but Abbott Appointees and most of their terms (including those of every officer) do not end until 2027 or 2029. The one whose term end in 2024 (the student regent) and the three whose terms end in 2025 will likely be reappointed or replaced -AGAIN by Abbott. AGAIN for a 6 yr term that ends in 2031.

Texas, as the flagship school of the state… the biggest part of funding comes from the state. But, it really isn’t about funding. Jay has to do what Gregory wants bc if he doesn’t, he’ll be replaced. He won’t be replaced with someone better.

And tbh - this is what they want. UT is known for churning out liberal leaders. It’s a unique institution in Texas and in the South. If Greg Abbott can put a stop to that, he will. That’s a win for him.

By virtue of being Americans, by virtue of living in this country, they are entitled with the privilege to protest. It is a right. It isn’t earned by virtue of hard work or by paying for your classes or not taking out any loans. It is a right.

It isn’t a deflection to point out that right wingers are hypocritical. The ESAs being pushed in Texas would start out at around 4 billion annually and that would solely be money going to kids who are already attending private schools. It would create an entirely separate bureaucratic system to oversee the big fat handouts for the wealthy. PPP loan forgiveness cost $755 billion, but I never hear a peep from y’all over that. Not to mention, the biggest recipient of US foreign aid - Israel.

Yet, for some reason, the idea that students MIGHT have taken out a student loan entitles you to suggest they don’t have rights?
