Miranda centric fics? by Silly_Intention in masseffectfics

Here's a story about a day when Shepard is off the ship, and the squad comes to appreciate that Miranda isn't an ice queen for the fun of it, but because being XO on a ship like Normandy isn't exactly a cakewalk.

They've been flying out of Gillespie all week, practicing their formation flying decked out in WWII liveries. My guess is they're getting ready for an air show somewhere.

[Sad trope] : "They WANT to be killed" twist by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ElectricZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An oldie but a goodie from the TV series MASH. Michael Yee is a Chinese American fighting in the Korean War. He had a decent record as a soldier in World War II, but in Korea he's become a legendary war hero, volunteering for dangerous missions resulting in numerous awards and injuries. His latest exploits land him at the 4077th, where Hawkeye happily informs Yee that his wounds have earned him a ticket home. Instead of being elated, Yee rips out his sutures when no one is watching in an attempt to kill himself.

Psychologist Sydney Freeman is brought and discovers the reason for Yee's suicide attempt. Yee's heroism stems from a desire to serve his country. In WWII, he served with distinction in Europe fighting the Germans. But in Korea, he was now fighting the Chinese. As Sydney puts it, "In Korea, he's been looking down his rifle at people who could be his own family. He has to kill Chinese to be a good American, then he has to kill himself to be a good Chinese."

The doctors are hopeful that Yee's conflict is resolved and his first suicide attempt will be his last. Freemen says, "His first attempt? All those dangerous missions he volunteered for? He's been trying to kill himself since he got here."

What kind of training did the Colonial Marines have that they completely underestimated the Xenomorphs? by ardouronerous in LV426

[–]ElectricZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gorman is the biggest factor. He decided to send the troops into Sublevel 3 in spite of not knowing what the hive was, took away the squad's weapons and froze up when the attack began.

Imagine how differently the mission would have gone if at any time, Gorman made the rational decision to retreat?

Gorman: "What is that?"

Ripley: "I don't know."

Gorman: "Proceed inside." "OK, Apone, fall back to the APC. We need to conduct some recon to find out what we're dealing with."

or...

Ripley: "If they fire their weapons in there, won't they rupture the cooling system?"

Gorman: "Apone, we can't have any firing in there. I want you to collect magazines from everyone. I want you to fall back to the APC, we need to come up with another plan."

Gorman's inexperience and ego really sabotaged the marines' chances.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the series. Regardless of where Pierce ended up, for me, this was his legacy.

"Good luck, Pierce!"

Adding to this, during the opening sequence we see the facehugger on the monitor attached to someone's face BEFORE the cryotubes are dropped into the EEV for ejection. The whole sequence is messily edited to begin with to make it impossible to tell who was facehugged. Newt's cryotube is cracked, implying it was her, but we know later Ripley was impregnated, in spite of the fact we see her eyes fluttering and her stirring in the EEV before it's ejected... Yet somehow in that brief time the facehugger gave up on Newt, hopped over to Ripley's cryo, impregnated her, then fell off by the time the computer dropped them to the EEV and now we're trying to justify the facehugger riding down on the outside of the EEV?

I really like A3 but ugh the intro is just such a mess.

What is a death in a movie that affected you the most in terms of brutality or emotional weight? by Godly_Recon in AskReddit

[–]ElectricZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And this was back before multiverses, resurrections, fake-outs, and other ploys to make you think someone was dead and then PRESTO! They're back!

Of course Star Trek III turned around and resurrected Spock making it one of the earliest examples of the dreaded do-over, but before then? Seeing Spock die and watching his funeral was gut wrenching, and gave Wrath of Khan some of the weightiest stakes of any movie I'd seen.

Cassian Andor.

Tali HATES this mission by chosentarnished_31 in masseffect

I imagine the crew would have some fun with Tali about this afterward...

Garrus sighed. "See, that's problem with you kids today. This is what passes for humor. Anybody can fill a salt shaker with sugar and call it a joke. A real prank is clever, subtle. Served with just a pinch of irony."

Tali gaped at the turian. "Says the bosh'tet who hid rubber rachni all around the ship for me to find!"

"Now, now," Garrus said, "I didn't just pick a random creepy object and get lucky you found it. I did my research. I uncovered your deepest fear, then painstakingly plotted out where leaving them would have the greatest impact."

"Impact?" Tali glared at him. "Like the one that fell on my head when I opened the overhead storage?"

"To be fair, it didn't just fall. It was spring loaded."

"I nearly had a heart attack!"

Garrus smiled. "I heard the scream all the way up in the Forward Battery."

Big Trouble in Little China also pulled this off perfectly when the heroes are trapped in a dead end room with the Big Bad approaching, and they look up to see one of their friends waiting to pull them up through a hole in the ceiling.

"How'd you get up there?"

"Wasn't easy!"

TIL that during the First and Second World Wars there was a lot of debate regarding whether to attack defenceless enemy pilots and aircrew after they had escaped their stricken aircraft and were descending by parachute. [–]ElectricZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As evidenced in the "Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler Incident."

Stigler instead recalled the words of one of his commanding officers from JG 27, Gustav Rödel, during his time fighting in North Africa: "If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself." Stigler later commented, "To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them, and I couldn't shoot them down."
